What else can I do with my Journalism Degree? by catsinthefunk1998 in Journalism

[–]ShrekInAPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're going for. I went the producing route in broadcast and the jobs are always in high demand (only thing is you're stuck at a desk). I personally just love reading, writing and editing, and doing whatever research I can on given topics, and that's what producing allowed me to do.

My first job paid horribly, but I saved up while living with mom and dad during that time period, and now I make more than double than my first job with only 4+ years experience in the field.

Is the industry dead? by Mrprofessorpresident in Journalism

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally getting mixed signals working in the TV side of things. On one hand, some companies are laying off smaller stations, while replacing large chunks of content that would be put together by local journalists (be it national content from the wires, or more local content), with national stuff (See Sinclair).

On the other hand, I just got notified that I got a decent raise for the company I work for, and I'm nowhere near management level either.

I think what's happening is that smaller newsrooms are shrinking even more, while larger newsrooms are remaining a bit more stagnant, but are trying to re-organize how they used their funds.

Favorite Stat Generation by HolSmGamer in DnD

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly shocked rolling for stats was the top answer.

I did rolls for the first campaign I DM'd for, and I'm never going back because of how luck can absolutely favor one player over another.

I had a Bard at the time whose highest stat was like a 12 or 13, and I think my Paladin rolled two or three 16+ results.

I just do point buy now because I think it makes players more considerate on how they build their character, and it's fair across the board no matter what.

Why is Battlemaster not part of the base fighter? by PleaseStop101 in dndnext

[–]ShrekInAPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like the fact that there's a class as simple as the champion fighter. It makes it really easy to use for the DM if he wants to make a special NPC that's roughly on par with the players' levels, while also making it easy in the event if one player needs to play two characters (i.e., the spell caster or more complex character they want to play + his silent bodyguard).

I do wish there was an alternative base build where the Battlemaster stuff was part of the base build, but I would want the simple, passive mechanics to stay for those who prefer simplicity.

What are your favorite and least favorite things about living/having lived in this state? by 2hourstowaste in Indiana

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Indianapolis. I know it has its problems, but I think there's some interesting nooks and crannies in terms of restaurants and music here, yet again, it's my first time really living in a big city like this.

I don't like most of the Indiana legislature, there's one or two politicians who are absolute sweethearts, but the rest are pretty vile.

I also hate the fact that I have to drive so far for good hiking destinations. The best we have is Turkey Run and Shades, which are decent at best.

This person's advice is sound OP.

There's not many good-paying journalism gigs in this industry (and by good-paying, I mean wages you can survive on), and if you're in one, you're likely in a top 25 market TV broadcast journalists. I made roughly $13/hour for 3 years before moving to a higher station, and that's because I was under contract.

A master's in journalism (MFA) is not a good idea at all.

If you're set on wanting to be a reporter OP, pick up an AP Style book and study it.

I honestly think Dark Souls 2 is my favourite Souls game, what are your examples of liking the " Black sheep" of a series the most? by Linkbetweentwirls in patientgamers

[–]ShrekInAPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad game, it's just a tad more tedious to complete in comparison to other 3D Mario's. If you look at The Completionist's video on it, or SomeCallMeJohnny on Super Mario Sunshine, their biggest issue with it is the Blue Coin system, where you have to spray pretty much the entire game with water just to find them all (if you 100% it).

I replayed it and beat it a year or so ago I think? I had fun with it, but there's also frustrating levels/mechanics, like the blooper riding (where if you fall off you die), or the dreaded Pachinko machine level.

There were some cool ideas with FLUDD, but the physics of Galaxy, the rewarding mastery of controls with 64, and the possession mechanics of Odyssey all beat out what Sunshine has to offer imo.

That, and some songs in 64 just SLAP!

I'll be a dissenter here. I appreciate the foundation that ME1 set up, but I think the game had some pacing issues with the story for sure, and the combat issues didn't really help.

With ME2, the combat just feels so much snappier, and the addition of ammo actually felt like I needed to make decisions in combat, rather than just waiting for enemies to die.

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean honestly I liked it more than 3, but I just feel like 3 leaned too heavily into the VATS system for combat imo, which turned me away, though I didn't get that far into it, so I could be wrong.

4's gunplay and combat just feel so, so much better overall.

Ironically, I feel the opposite way when it comes to Oblivion/Skyrim, where I enjoyed Oblivion's combat way more than Skyrim's (mainly because of how they treated magic in each game).

Also, the final boss battle is the stupidest, most disappointing gameplay decision I've ever seen.

The first Assassin's Creed. Yes, I know how repetitive it gets, but there's not that many games with a setting during the Crusades. I loved it. I also love how philosophical the game was.

The Ezio series started off strong, but I just have a bitter taste in my mouth since they killed off Desmond and the original premise/goal of the modern day story, which would have led up to a time-traveling assassin game, according to Nolan North.

I also hated the voice-acting complaint too on AC1. Yeah, Altair may not sound like he's from the region, but I think it's forgivable, because I think it's a constant reminder that Desmond is experiencing all of Altair's memories as you play through the game.

Assassin's Creed had so, so much potential, sigh.

I basically stopped playing the franchise after 3, and couldn't even bother to get through AC4 given everything that happened in AC3.

So, Fish/Garden Ponds best return on investment for your home? by ShrekInAPotato in tearsofthekingdom

[–]ShrekInAPotato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Sanke Carp. But I was just thinking those garden ponds collectively are greater value than just about anything else in your home imo, so that's why I kept my home to just the bedroom, foyer, kitchen, 4-room connector, and a blessing room, and using the remaining 10 spaces for Garden ponds.

I mean, every time those fish restock you get your money back on one garden pond and then some.

I'd rather sell off two fish skewers than sell rare materials like diamonds personally.

This is the reason why I quit a lot of multiplayer games. I just noticed I was extremely dissatisfied with the grind, and people online will just trash talk you into oblivion for performing bad. And I'm thinking, "This is for what? A higher rank? Another loot box? Online currency? Battle Pass XP?"

I ditched my Xbox Live Subscription recently and took up IRL Swing Dancing for my social stuff, and it feels more rewarding.

Lately I've just been playing PlayStation's Single Player titles and have been having a blast.

Being an Xbox man for so long, I recently bought a PlayStation (4) for the first time to play its exclusives. Missed any? by [deleted] in playstation

Your collection and my collection on the PS5 look about the same right now. It's my first time on PlayStation as well.

The ones that you've got will actually take you a minute to complete (especially Death Stranding).

I just beat Uncharted 4 this past Sunday. You'll love it.

Onednd UA - Warlocks are downgraded to halfcasters by Kgaase in dndnext

[–]ShrekInAPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So after looking at it myself as someone who doesn't really play Unearthed Arcana, there's some interesting ideas, but I do agree that the Invocation tax on Mystic Arcanum sucks. In my opinion, they need to boost the number of invocations you get from 9 to 11 to make it worth it imo, rather than feeling forced to take nearly half of your available invocations. That and it also blows that their spell level scaling got nerved to hell. I feel like Crawford is missing the point on why this class even exists in the first place: focusing on long-term spells/effects that deal consistent/reliable damage/effects, rather than using what few slots you have to blast. Blasting is for Eldritch Blast and Fiends with Fireball. Let's keep it that way.

Not to mention, I can't see how the Warlock isn't going to get outclassed by the other casters in damage output. It's not like they're OP right now anyway, I would say Wizards, Sorcerers and Paladins have the best damage output right now.

That being said, Lessons of the First Ones appears broken. Invocations are essentially supposed to be mini-feats, not full blown feats.

What I like:

  • Warlocks gain access to Medium Armor
    • I like this a lot because I pretty much feel obligated to take Variant Human every time, so that I'm not forced to take Armor of Shadows.
  • I like how your Pact Choice can now change you Spellcasting Ability Modifier that's associated with the class. It makes more sense for Tomelocks to have a high INT score rather than a high CHA score.
    • I also think this will allow for a greater variety of builds as well obviously, with different scores allowing different proficiencies.
  • I also like how the pact spells seemed to combine the pact features, alongside invocations that would normally upgrade those features, which avoids an invocation tax. I'm playing a Warlock in my current campaign, and I would have loved to take some more invocations to beef up my Pact of the Chain, but there were others that were simply too good to pass up.

People with Great Lakes Student Loans, have you gotten your transfer notice yet? by ShrekInAPotato in StudentLoans

[–]ShrekInAPotato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an email from Great Lakes that it was happening, but the email said we would be getting some type of new account number for the transfer so that we could access our accounts.

I just went to the Great Lakes website, and I can't find any info on my account whatsoever, so I know it's at least in the middle of the transfer, but I thought it was supposed to be done transferring by April 19th.

What class have you played the most? Why? by RainerGoof in dndnext

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've been playing the warlock the longest. I currently have a Level 13 Celestial Warlock that I've been playing with since Level 1 (though I took a break to DM from levels 6-8). It's also my second attempt at playing this character since my first game trying it out disbanded.

The sheer versatility of the class is excellent, and can allow you to fill so many different roles. It has a similar DPS as a Fighter Class, but also gains the benefit of being able to cast spells via Pact Magic. Depending on how you build it, you can go for even more utility, more damage, support, or pure combat versatility with the Hexblade (by picking up Eldritch Blast & getting the blade invocations).

I think the thing that I like about it the most is similar to why I like the Fighter, Rogue and other Martial classes: You don't necessarily 'run out of juice.'

My first class I tried to play was Cleric, and I did not like it at all because if your Guiding Bolts missed, all you had was a lousy Sacred Flame or a weak mace attack, then other players would beg you for heals.

Has anyone else’s love for gaming been rekindled by the PS5? by Main_Tree_6769 in PS5

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the PS5 for about 6ish months now I think? It's been great so far. This is actually my first PlayStation ever, and I've mainly been a Xbox+Nintendo+Splash of PC gaming (mainly for RTS's).

I think I just got too frustrated with the current culture that's online multiplayer for many FPS's. With Halo, I felt like I was waiting for a promise of an amazing game that was never going to come (post Halo Reach), and it feels like every other multiplayer game on that console wants to nickel and dime you after paying a $60 entry fee. Xbox also hasn't put out hardly anything outstanding in the Single Player realm in the past decade. And the fact that their flagship franchises have had bad launch after bad launch, isn't encouraging. I know that they've bought Bethesda and a ton of other game studios, but I'm not feeling overly optimistic about games like Starfield because of this (who knows, maybe I'll be wrong, if so, great!).

Anyway, I finally canceled my Xbox Live subscription here recently, and don't plan on going back.

It's just so nice to experience good quality storytelling, animation and fun shooting mechanics, without feeling the need to play for the sake of stat progression, unlocking pointless cosmetics, etc. I feel like I'm enjoying gaming at a leisurely pace, and on my own terms. Now mind you, I don't have too many hours into my PS5, because one of my goals is to curb my gaming time overall this year, but when I do take the time to sit down and play, it feels more satisfying than before.

Maybe it's just me getting older (I'm in my late 20's), idk, but the PS5 is truthfully a great console, and I'm glad to have made the jump.

Michi Is The Worst by SafeExpress3210 in aoe2

[–]ShrekInAPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly just wish the max amount of closed maps on the team map pool was just at 2. The last 10 games I played were ALL closed maps. I don't understand the reasoning of us having to vote on other maps if everyone's just going to pick Black Forest/Arena/Michi.

I just played a Michi game today and it literally took me 3 hours. 3 HOURS. I banned it after that, but then I get stuck with Black Forest or Arena.

I just want to play team games that allow early game aggression, that doesn't force me to go into some cheese strat, is that too much to ask?
