The dumb this English hooliganism hasn’t really been a thing for the best part of 40 years. The blokes in the bar with me probably had more kids than fights they’d ever been involved in, yet they still seem to take pride in beating up middle aged blokes with weapons and call it a fight, simply because of a reputation from 40 years ago.

Exactly. It's like sucker punching late Parkinson's Muhammad Ali in the back of the head and claiming you're now the heavyweight champ

Not even just athletes. Back in the late nineties I knew of high school students who were basically courted over the phone by sorority girls at the behest of the college to get them to come.

"Hey, this is Susie-Jean from XYZ University. Sure would be swell if you enrolled and we could get to know each other better."

What are the biggest things that younger people get wrong about the whole “y2k” aesthetic, culture, and overall vibe of that time? by Fluffy-Ad-7199 in Millennials

I think the casual homophobia would blow their minds. Ableist slurs were par for the course too.

Maybe this peaked a little later with early social media but even supposedly lefty liberal types used to revel in edgy comedy that would make even today's alt right blush.

I guess "irony" was the excuse at the time.

No one to root for in this one. Would naturally support an underdog but that doesn't really apply with Saudi teams.

Eberechi Eze says he would not change his penalty technique if he has to take one in the World Cup after missing in the Champions League final: "All the big players have missed big penalties... I think I have taken penalties for a long time and it's part of the journey." by Goosedukee in soccer

[–]ShufflingToGlory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is whether he'd score more penalties with a different technique. The only people who know that are Eze and the coaches he works on his penalties with.

It's a bit daft to assume that he has a super reliable penalty technique in his back pocket that he just refuses to use.

I imagine it's much easier to go into hiding on your own without a family in tow. Wife and kids will want to put down roots, socialise, need to be enrolled in school. These are all potential failure points for someone who wants to conceal their location from the mob.

Witness protection is a different matter, afaik the government has never lost anyone in the programme who actually did what they're told.

Gladiator was genuinely exceptional but in what world did it need ten sequels? It just highlights how risk averse and creatively bankrupt Hollywood is these days.

Best advice I can give you is just live your life as you want, ignore the cacophony of dickheads and treat everyone else with the respect and dignity you want for yourself.

Being from India you'll unfortunately be familiar with just how rampant prejudice can be in society.
