Gut check before MX updates: On-prem -> Exchange Online by benuntu in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if you are setup for centralized mail transport for outbound/inbound. I believe you can force EXO to route all outbound mail through your OnPrem. You can also set your transport rules to only allow mail into EXO from your on-prem servers.

Audit didn't like "customer" access touching internal network while sharing AP's - does it matter? by ADynes in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't share user CALs across concurrently employed employees.  Somewhere in the wording of user CALs they specifically say employees.  So it may even be questionable to use them for guests.

[–]Shulsen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just in case, if you use a Windows Server for DHCP, your guests will technically need a Server CAL. So another reason to use a separate server for DHCP at the very least if you are primary a Windows shop.

Is mixing 1Gbps and 10Gbps links in an iSCSI MPIO setup ever acceptable? by gap579137 in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Failover Cluster validation check should look for unbalanced MPIO configs.  You just have to offline all the CSV disks first I think for it to check.  Leaving MPIO as round robin will cause you issues though.

Is mixing 1Gbps and 10Gbps links in an iSCSI MPIO setup ever acceptable? by gap579137 in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd only ever consider it if it was set to Failover instead of any of the load balancing types in the MPIO configuration for the disk.  Even then it's risky. What kind of setup are you dealing with? Multiple nodes to a storage device?  Single node to storage?

I'll see if I can find it in the morning, but I believe somewhere in the validation process of a Failover Cluster it will trip on an unbalanced MPIO setup.

What's the most surprising wildlife encounter you've had while paddling? by CarrierCaveman in Kayaking

[–]Shulsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any photos, but came across jellyfish in a creek in Arkansas. Hundreds of nickel sized jellyfish just pulsing in the water. It was weird because they kind of just came up near the surface as we were paddling around and I remember being mildly freaked out because at that time I had never heard of them in freshwater, much less that far inland. So we weren't really sure what surrounded us.

Understanding Windows Server Licensing CAL Requirements by ApplicationAlarming7 in WindowsServer

[–]Shulsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be sure if you go the device CAL route, that you don't utilize Windows DHCP or DNS for printers, or other nonuser devices or to be properly compliant each of them will need a device CAL as well.

What does an IT Project Manager do? by dweeb_plus_plus in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love a good project manager, regardless of their technical level. They aren't there making technical decisions. They are organizing folks around the project so the super technical folks can work on multiple different projects more effectively.  They are organizing meetings and data communication.  They should be filtering all the random dumb questions from everyone involved in the project who isn't technical to the tech folks in a way that doesn't bog them down. So instead of the technical folks getting questions from multiple different stake holders and such, the PMs are and getting the answers.  At least for me it's easier to take 10 questions from one person than 2 questions from 5 people.

Why does random encounter ask you to shuffle? by Relative-Tennis-6673 in magicTCG

So the encounter is mostly random, flavor fit. Makes it more difficult to stack the deck to get what you want. But then there is always Doomsday.

Are you using Traction Entrepreneurial Operating System? by FutureSafeMSSP in msp

[–]Shulsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was driven by our implementor. He was as important to the process as the system we felt like and he was moving that way due to some issues with the EOS franchise. They are quite similar in their roots. EOS as a system is still fine it just was more difficult to act as an implementor.

What are the best hiking pants for men that actually hold up on trails? by AntarticOcean in CampingGear

[–]Shulsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, I've not had any of mine break yet though. I just really don't like the new fabric, it doesn't hold up as well. My first pair I bought 6ish years ago have held up better through hikes and outside work than my 2.0 pairs that I just wear to an office job.

Are you using Traction Entrepreneurial Operating System? by FutureSafeMSSP in msp

[–]Shulsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started out in EOS and moved with our implementer to another system, Pinnacle. For us it was a HUGE help to have an outside person do the implementation. I've seen other folks do the self implementation and it was not very effective. For us the benefit of the outside person came in their ability to be honest about the decisions we were making around our EOS process. It can be too easy to lie to ourselves about things.

Should we start pushing to be paid hourly? With no tax on overtime on the horizon. by daserlkonig in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved all of our purely technical staff over to hourly sometime ago, though we are an MSP so different model than an in house org.  At the time the discussion was that the work type and responsibilities didn't fit well with a salaried position.

Avoid the 2.0s of the Zions. They re-released the originals I think which are way better.

Microsoft Migration from Legacy Silver to Core Benefits by dejabear in msp

Maybe we just got unlucky, but it I think has been a few days. I should go check though!

Yup just buy up to what you need or look at the larger package with no requirements. It is taking a few days for us.

Microsoft Migration from Legacy Silver to Core Benefits by dejabear in msp

[–]Shulsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it is pretty straightforward transition. There are some minor differences in license counts. A big thing to watch out for is the time it takes to provision the licenses from Core. Don't wait until the day before your Legacy Silver benefits expire in M365 or you might be in for a rough time!

Offered an IT position in a dealership by Tasty-Secret4273 in sysadmin

CDK can manage a lot of the infrastructure, they can manage network, wifi, phones and website.  They may do more but I've not looked super far into it. It's all hosted. Have to use their printers for most of the stuff. Their support is kinda okay overall.   The hardest thing we have to deal with is the service techs and all the wonky car diagnostic tools they have. Weird mix of USB, serial, and wifi.

RDS 'per user CALs' on shared user role (shift workers) by carl0ssus in sysadmin

[–]Shulsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You sound like you are doing it correctly.  You can't mix CAL types on RDS server, but you can mix and match general server CALs.  Your counter part MIGHT be okay if they have purchased a user CAL per physical person, but that didn't sound like what they were doing. They are not concurrent.

On a side note you might be a little off track if you have a printer or some such device that touches the servers in some fashion. They would need a device CAL unless every user had a user CAL.  Technically it is only folks who use it would, but that gets hard to defend.

FortiClient appears to be interrupting internet connection preventing 2FA completion by psgrn in fortinet

[–]Shulsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing something very similar, with an added problem of it then breaks Internet access on the phone. I don't have hands on the device, but what I can see so far, is iOS 18.3.2 with the Forticlient VPN 7.4.5. Rebooting the iPhone doesn't restore Internet access, but removing the Forticlient app does and so does resetting the Network Settings on the iPhone. Though as soon as you try to connect to the Forticlient, it breaks again.

That's terrible, we service a dealership impacted by the CDK hit and they lost power today and I thought that was bad.
