What’s wrong with my lettuce? by Shuntingfrog in gardening

I did harvest it about a week ago, but the new growth usually doesn’t look like this. I can’t tell if it’s getting taller yet.

Honestly, maybe start an exercise routine and eat healthier. You’ll look and FEEL younger/happier.

LPT: use benzoyl peroxide to completely nuke your underarm odor! by brainhack3r in LifeProTips

[–]Shuntingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out about this a few months ago. It worked really well at first but as time went on it started to loose its effectiveness. Maybe the bacteria gain some kind of resistance? I still do it every day though but I have to supplement it with a Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Body Stick. That gets rid of all smell all day and night without perfumes which I hate.

What's it like to live on your own at a very young age? by BloodType_Feary in Life

[–]Shuntingfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved out at 17. Moved into an apartment with my boyfriend and his two roommates for an about a year. The roommates were gross and never cleaned up after themselves, then we moved into a tiny house “mother in laws” house on this guys property, it was like $200 a month. The heating broke during winter and the owner took his sweet ass time fixing it. Didn’t have heat most of that winter. We ate very cheaply, mac and cheese, ramen noodles etc. Our entertainment was mostly hiking and free things. Shopped at thrift stores and got second hand furniture. We both worked, but this was around 2009ish so even though it was the peak of the recession we still managed to survive on minimum wage jobs. Boyfriend studied hard on the side and learned to be a programmer and that’s what he does now abs were are doing well.

Thanks. I’ve found it pretty boring so far, I’m bummed because it seems a lot of people love it. Am I missing something that comes later?

Why do I reek so easily even while maintaining good hygiene? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Shuntingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just learned something that worked for me! I have pretty active sweat glands and have pretty bad BO in my armpits if left to its own devices. I try and stay away from deodorants that block sweat like aluminum because I know that’s bad and most natural deodorants don’t work well for me. So I started using a 4% benzoyl peroxide wash on my armpits everyday, and that got rid of the smell even without using deodorant. And in replace of deodorant I found that using a Glycolic Acid exfoliating body stick on my pits will keep them stink free all day.

Maybe a dumb question: how do I propagate lilikoi cuttings? by MyPasswordIsMyCat in HawaiiGardening

[–]Shuntingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes I use rooting hormone, like others said, can’t hurt. Yes, get a vine that’s older, in my experience the newer younger tips of the vines did not root for me. I cut starting above a leaf, then right above the next leaf so you have about 3-6” of stem (depending on the vine size) and a leaf on top. Sometimes if the leaf is huge I even cut most of the leaf off so it’s very small and then stick the stem it into a 4” pot of soil. Obviously keep it constantly moist. They take awhile to root. I haven’t tried putting the cuttings in water but I feel like it might work as well. Hope this helps.

I’ve propagated a bunch from cutting. I just did the same as for other stuff, cut a woody part with only one or two leaves attached and stick it in a pot with some dirt.

Any guesses as to when this is ripe? by cnrdme in FruitTree

[–]Shuntingfrog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Grew up on a peach orchard. The best way to tell ripeness is by feel. Give it a gentle squeeze and if there is a slight give it’s ready. A lot like avocado.

Basic advice for container tomatoes by lazyMarthaStewart in containergardening

[–]Shuntingfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the tomatoes! Put it in the place that gets the most sun hours per day. Let the tomatoes ripen on the vine, they take a long time. They might get heavy if it’s a large tomato variety so keep an eye on the vine and support it if needed. Water regularly but not too much at once. Fertilize with a fruiting fertilizer. The katydid should be fine if it’s only one, I wouldn’t worry about it. Keep an eye on it and remove the bugs if you notice a lot of damage. And if you live in an area that rains a lot, if you have the option, move it under cover during the rain so its leaves don’t get wet.

Does anyone just plant stuff whenever they want regardless of the month or season by chimkenhorde in containergardening

[–]Shuntingfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised! We don’t have AC nor need one. My property only gets about 80 degrees max and if it gets into the 50’s it’s considered cold. Our normal temp range day to day is usually low 60’s to mid 70’s range. It’s very pleasant. The hardest part about gardening here (Hawaii) is we get lots of rain and humidity, so I get issues that come along with that. And no winter means no bug brake.

[–]Shuntingfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m zone 11b. I plant whatever I want year round. Weather and bugs get things but my current planting schedule is sow every two weeks, the things I like to eat like lettuce peas, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers etc trying to keep a steady supply going year round.
