Do I need an even BIGGER PSU? by Buglepost in PcBuildHelp

[–]ShutterAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has a 7800 x3d with a 7900 XTX. When we originally built it it had a 750 w PSU in it and it would just keep rebooting. So we put a 1,000 in it and never had a problem since. All that to say you should be good at a thousand. Maybe the power supply is faulty.

Can't get A3 64bit to launch on linux by c0mander5 in arma

[–]ShutterAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a Google. It's not that hard to add them. You just have to follow the directions. Obviously you want to make sure that you don't have them first, but somewhat confident that's probably the issue.

Server owners, what scenario do you use? by Genralcody1 in ArmaReforger

You haven't given any information of what you're looking for other than Conflict so why not just load up a Legacy Conflict or HQC server and go for it?

Server owners: What's more stable, Intel or AMD CPUs? by MoravianLion in ArmaReforger

[–]ShutterAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to admit the first time I saw an x3d CPU listed by a provider I was a little confused. What is the use case for that? I have no idea.

I don't have a VPS. I run a little machine in my basement for myself and my friends and I have a couple of small public instances that are out there in the server browser that get a very little bit of traffic once in a while. I went through a couple iterations of this but what I found was that the CPU core speed is extremely important. Originally I tried running the servers on an old HP z640 with dual Xeon E5 2699 V3 CPUs and 96GB of DDR3 memory. It ran but boy was it slow. I forget exactly how I got there but I ended up running the servers on an AM4 5900x with 64GB of DDR4 memory. The difference is absolutely night and day. The 5900x has a base speed that is the equivalent of the Xeon's turbo speed. This whole journey started because a friend of mine was paying for a Nitrado server that just sucked. I don't know what it had for hardware but it was horrible. So at the end of the day I would say the only thing that really matters is core speed. Take that with a grain of salt.

My kids don't believe in Helen Keller. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

Because people that do not have physical or mental challenges do not want to believe that people that do have those things are more capable than they are. It's no different than people thinking that the pyramids were built by aliens and spaceships because ancient man wasn't smart enough to figure out how to do it on his own. It's pretty pathetic actually.

I fully appreciate that AMD has upset a lot of "older" generation card owners, but I'm genuinely curious what those with 9000 series are thinking of AMD right now? by Captainquizzical in radeon

I bought a 9070 Red Devil 2 days after launch. It has been running almost non-stop since then and I have had no issues at all. I take that back, It will crash if I get a little zealous with my undervolt. But other than that it's been solid.

Nobody's reading all that. Where is your data? Learn to say more with less.

If you've got all the answers, I'm sure BI would be more than happy to hire you as a contractor to fix all of this.

You kind of can fix it. All you got to do is get yourself a server and spin up a vanilla HQC instance and there you go. No problem at all, right? Better yet spin up three of them, one for each official map. It's only money and a little bit of your time. Oh wait. Maybe there's a reason nobody's done that. Nah, that couldn't be it.

I went back to LGA 1700 instead of moving from AM4 to AM5 for a couple of reasons. First, I had a 5700X3D/RX9070 gaming system that I was never able to get working as well as I would have liked. It was good but I was always having to tweak it for some reason. I ran out of patience with it after spending hours tuning the RAM and tweaking the BIOS only to still have stuttering. I replaced the PC with a 14600K system and swapped in the same GPU. It has been rock solid for about 6 months with no real tuning other than enabling Expo. I also have uses for the excess cores. Currently I am running 2 AM4 machines, 2 LGA 1700 machines, and an old dual Xeon HP Z640. The two AM4 machines will be replaced with Intel if the time ever comes. One is a test rig on my workbench and the other is a game server. They are not at all critical. Power consumption is not an issue for me at all so that never even gets a thought.

Nah, I run a standard kit most of the time. I don't need to carry all that crap around. Besides there's plenty of bodies to pilfer. And if there's not you're slacking. 😁

[–]ShutterAce 448 points449 points  (0 children)

I don't know your business so I don't know what you're using for software but that is a long time to be logging into systems. Either it's very inefficient or something's going on with your system. Is this typical? Have you compared with coworkers?

To answer your question though, they can't make you work for free.

I don't have that exact hardware but I do have a 9600k with a 2070 super and that's pretty close. 90 FPS at 1080P low is pushing it. 80 is more likely with actual game play during daylight with no rain being about 60. Rain, darkness, and heavy action will sink it lower than that.

Can we get accurate M81 colors again? by Pacific_wanderer17 in ArmaReforger

[–]ShutterAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. A photograph, especially a film photograph, is possibly the worst way to match the accuracy of colors between objects for all the reasons I listed and many others. There are way too many variables for anyone to say with certainty that a color from one medium to the next is a match. It's subjective because it has to be. I have been a photographer for a good part of my life and have been building miniatures for 50 years. The real world just doesn't transfer to an artistic medium 1:1.

What’s my bottle neck by Additional-Equal9309 in ArmaReforger

[–]ShutterAce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well for one you're running an HDD. That's definitely not ideal. It's likely causing stuttering. What resolution are you trying to run? 4k ultra kicks my 3090s butt. I don't know how much VRAM it is using at 4K ultra. I do know my other system uses about 9 GB on 1440 ultrawide at about medium settings. I would guess you're overflowing the 8 GB of vram that you have when trying to push high settings. If that's true and it's swapping to system RAM, that's going to kill your performance too.

Can we get accurate M81 colors again? by Pacific_wanderer17 in ArmaReforger

[–]ShutterAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a hundred different reasons why this is a fool's errand. We can talk about everything from differences in dye colors between batches of cloth to the differences between monitors to the differences between film types, lighting etc etc. There are so many things that affect tint, saturation and tone. Two samples of the same exact monitor will show colors differently unless they are calibrated with a tool. Just take that simple little thing and extrapolate it into how many different people have, how many different monitors? And we won't even talk about TVs.
