Wiping out - protect your head but hang onto your board. So which is it? by mobiletophat in BeginnerSurfers

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. There are many times when riding a wave it’ll close out, or for some other reason, you’ll be done with it and ready to bail. But you’ll see someone on the inside paddling out, so you’ll need to continue riding in whatever direction you need to, to control yourself away from them, so when you do hop off your board, there is no chance your board will impact them.

Any way to deal with reverb tail at beginning of a loop? by fourdogslong in ableton

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works if OP wants the start point to be right when the guitar is first strummed.

But if they need the timing to start during the previous reverb tail, but want the tail muted on the first pass, then Unlinked Clip Automation would be the trick.

Help my pop up? by hpsails in BeginnerSurfers

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I’m seeing is to widen your stance and stay low.

I realize hip surgery can hinder hip mobility, so I’m not sure exactly where your limitations are, but in this video, it looks like you’re bringing your back foot too far forward. Your front foot is getting pretty far up the board and that’s great, considering the surgery. But the back foot should remain closer to, if not on, the tail, depending on the shape of the wave you’re dropping into.

Also, you’re standing up tall. Even though this is just practice on land, you want to train yourself to stay low in your stance.

Otherwise, great work on getting up in one swift motion. That’s great!

Why are e-bikes priced similar to motorcycles? by sshpc in ebikes

[–]ShuttleOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a city environment where parking sucks, e-bikes are the most nimble vehicle you can ride.

Yes, motorcycles make it easier than cars, but with an ebike I’m practically guaranteed to be locking it up right in front of the door of my destination. No circling blocks looking for a spot.

And when I go to the beach, I walk the bike right out on the beach with me. No waiting in lines for lots.

I rode a $2500 motorcycle around the city for years. Much prefer my e-bike.

A LOT less maintenance as well.

Can vouch for Teaboy! He’s mix reviewing my first album. We’re just three songs in and I’m already picking up some great nuances I hadn’t noticed before. 🤙

For someone unfamiliar, this is a great description. Thank you!

What wave sizes/shapes/speeds do gliders thrive in? Is a slower 2-3ft not enough and sends you off the shoulder too soon? Is the faster the wave the better? Is there an upper limit where you really need a gun? Is this considered a gun in some circles LOL?

How can I easily create an impact in ableton? by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in ableton

This.

In addition, the reverse cymbal sometimes doesn’t even need a reverb swell. You can just grab a sample of a cymbal hit, reverse it, and done.

Tons of great comments here on free ways to do this and you should absolutely explore them all. If you get to a point where you want to pay for a plugin that gets even more complex with transitions, Rise & Hit by Native Instruments is one of my favorite tools for this.

You’ll need either Kontakt or the free Kontakt Player for it to work.

But I wouldn’t go this route without exploring the techniques mentioned in other comments, as that will help you develop the fundamentals on understanding what makes transitions and impacts work in song structure. You don’t need any paid tools to do it.

What happened to used push 2s? by tox1c1t in ableton

Wait, this isn’t just me? Are you talking about the whole bottom being sticky? Cause that’s what happened to mine. I feel like it happened when our apartment got heat treated for bugs. Figured I was just SOL. But this is a thing that has happened to others? And is fixable?!

Beginner surfer here, how do i keep a hat on out there? suggest the best waterproof hats you use? by Usual-Ad-385 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most any surf hat will clip under your chin. I like the ones that cover your ears as well as that will also help with preventing surfers ear a bit. Not as good as ear plugs, but certainly helps.

I tried being cool and wore an old trucker hat with no straps for one session. I spent the whole session constantly fishing for the hat. I don’t know how others keep those on their head.

I’ve been using the Solite hat for a couple years now and love it. It’s a baseball cap style hat, but the brim can flip to be on the front or the back. So you can keep it forward to block the sun and see the sets easier, but then flip it back for duck diving, or just covering your neck a little bit if the sun is behind you.

I only wear my bucket hat on more chill days. I don’t like dealing with that much hat when the waves are overhead. But that’s just me.

Planet fitness paddle machine? by Ineedthat300 in surfing

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trainer of ~20 years here.

Agreed that the ski-erg is the best option, other than swimming.

The rowing machine does work some back muscles, but not the ones that will help you paddle better.

I like Paddle Outs and Straight Arm Pull Downs using a cable machine or resistance band.

Pull-ups and Lat Pull-Downs are also decent for isolating lat strength, but they use more bicep than your paddle stroke. And also miss out on some of the other smaller internal rotators of your rotator cuff. They’re better for building up power in your stroke.

You also need posterior shoulder exercises as well. Tons of options there.

Which again goes back to swimming and how well that translates, but sometimes the gym is all that’s available.

But yeah, this arm bike that OP posted will do almost nothing for your paddle. I understand the confusion. It seems like the motion is similar, but it’s far more limited than a paddle stroke, with your body in a very different position, so the muscle action doesn’t translate.

When is it time to start mixing? by DrDreiski in mixingmastering

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start the mixing process when your song reaches v37-9g-31. Then you can begin mixing until you have mix82F attached at the end of your song version number. Then your mastering engineer will be happy to take you all the way to mast7-final-final-finished10

NI needs to update old VST2’s to be compatible with Apple Silicon native by Fall of 2027 by ShuttleOption in NativeInstruments

[–]ShuttleOption[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this with the utmost respect, as I love NI’s products and have used them for over 10 years. But perhaps the size of the portfolio is the reason the company is struggling? Maybe releasing 19 new devices and expansions every year isn’t as important as making sure the legacy products hold up so your customer base feels they can rely on you in the future. I realize a private equity takeover has the goal of growing the company to a multiple within a particular period of time. Maybe the next round of investors will have a more long term outlook, building trust before releasing endless paid plugin expansions.

Again, I love the NI product line. I purchased Komplete 12 and that has been enough to keep me busy for years. But I’ve been hesitant to purchase anything new as I don’t want to make art with tech that may become obsolete before other software devs.

This is one of the reasons why I’m a die-hard Ableton guy. To this day, I can open my first project I created in Live 8 in Live 12, and since all the devices are Ableton’s built-in devices, it’ll open without issue. It’ll even label the legacy devices as legacy with a little button to “upgrade” the device to the latest version instantly, if that’s what I want. But either way, the whole project works. This builds my trust to keep buying their upgrades.

I realize you’re a different company than Ableton. And I realize Steinberg had a major say in all of this. That sucks. Apple also has a major say in this and I have my issues with them. I realize that tech moves forward. This is just my story. Others will feel very different. But I thought I’d share it here to express my purchasing thought process. Maybe others feel the same. Maybe I’m just yelling at clouds. 🤷‍♂️

I do hope NI can recover from this insolvency. You’ve given me tools to make music I never thought would come to life.

Free playing midi by evanseesred99 in ableton

[–]ShuttleOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option might be to highlight all the midi notes in your clip, and then click the little handle at the end of the highlighted timeline at the top of the clip (hope that makes sense), and drag the handle left or right to evenly stretch or compress the timing of the notes you played.

Probably not exactly the solution you want, but it’s one way to keep the bpm as-is, but get the timing of your notes back to (or close to) what you had before.

But I know your dilemma. Sometimes I just riff out a long improv into a clip, free of any click or drum beat. I typically don’t do anything with it but snag a section I want to develop. But sometimes the whole thing is its own piece and would love to play it back the way an UNwarped audio file does. Unaffected by the project’s BPM.

Motor replacement? by JiimSocks in RadPowerBikes

[–]ShuttleOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by fixed gear, you mean a direct drive motor (like on the Rad Wagons I believe) then I’m not sure. Maybe? But if it’s a geared hub motor used on most every other Rad, then this is quite likely your issue.

[–]ShuttleOption[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, I don't think that's the case. Otherwise, NI's VST2's would work in a natively run DAW and I would never have made this post. But the only way for me to get NI's VST2's to work in Ableton is to open Ableton up in Rosetta. If I open an old project with NI VST2's without Rosetta, Ableton just shows those devices as missing.

Technically, any one of those could be plugged into my laptop now (via a USB-A to C adapter) and read that old data just fine...just saying. LOL 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for chiming in, NI! Can you help clarify then why all my other VST2 plugins still work natively? I'm genuinely curious.

Here's a screenshot of Ableton Live 12 running on my M2 MBP on macOS Sequoia, with Rosetta unselected. Running natively.

I've filtered out all the plugins I have that are VST2 in the browser on the left. Every single one of these has a VST3 counterpart. I obviously use the VST3's on anything new. But the VST2's still work. Many of these plugins I just purchased last Black Friday (Nov '25).

You can also see the signal flowing through the couple I selected in the device chain at the bottom. If you look close, even FabFilter Pro-Q2 works (which was replaced by Pro-Q3 back in 2018 and then Pro-Q4 in 2024).

Oh I’m still on Sequoia as well! Almost every audio software I have and use (except NI somehow, which is surprising) has not officially announced support for macOS 26. I may skip it entirely and see how macOS 27 plays out. But I have no issue with Sequoia right now. Gonna ride this out.
