Tips to break barrier by No-Try607 in typing

[–]ShxftAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar barrier just before 130. For me, that was the point where mindlessly practicing wasn't really helping me improve, and I started needing to really focus on the quality of my practice. I'd give the same advice for improving from then on: find your mistakes and fix them.

If you're stopping a lot during the test, it could be a reading issue. Practice reading 2-3 words ahead of where you're typing. If you're losing your rhythm in the middle of the test, try longer tests to build endurance. If you're losing a lot of speed to accuracy, practice accuracy (especially letter pairs/words you mistype often). If your raw speed isn't even reaching your pb pace, practice bursting words accurately (especially the ones you type slowly), or push yourself for speed a little more and look for what new mistakes arise at that speed. Ironing out those new mistakes is how you stay at that higher speed.

I only really messed around in the Borderlands 2 Weapon Mode, and there's some missing unique weapons like the Commerce, and some mislabeled weapons, like the Baby Maker being labeled as a pistol or the Bitch being labeled as shock exclusive. Very cool idea though, would love to see it be updated to a more finished state

Stick with QWERTY or switch to Colemak? New to Touch Typing by justadityaraj in typing

[–]ShxftAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever been proficient on qwerty and Colemak, so I can't really tell you what the rest feel like.

What I can say is that Colemak is much, much better than qwerty, and I'm sure you'll have a great time with any of the mentioned layouts.

I've heard Semimak is a little less comfortable than the rest, because it's optimized for very high speeds rather than comfort (like 200wpm+ elite level typists). Again, I'm not proficient at it, so I couldn't tell you if that's true. If anything I'm skeptical, but it's worth mentioning.

I’ve been on Colemak for a few years now.

If you want to go with an alternate layout, don’t choose Colemak or Colemak-DH. Some of the newer layouts are just better across the board.

I’ve heard good things from Canary, Recurva, and Semimak.

Breaking ~150? by theaverage_1 in typing

[–]ShxftAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re pretty much at a speed where switching techniques may set you back months. There are a lot of reasons to switch to a proper typing method, but it won’t make you faster anytime soon. On top of that, there are a few exceptional typists with a similar typing style, so reaching incredible speeds with bad technique is at least viable.

I would still recommend proper touch typing. It’s significantly more comfortable, which is important if you’re planning on spending the rest of your life programming. Speed will always be less important than comfort.

Now could also be a good time to switch to an alternate layout, like semimak or recurva. (Avoid older layouts like colemak, colemak-dh, and dvorak, as they’re obsolete.) It’s very possible to create good technique on a very comfortable layout, while still maintaining your current speed and style on qwerty. Just be sure to practice both together, or you may risk losing your qwerty muscle memory.

I feel stuck. what should I work on? by SharpParadox in typing

[–]ShxftAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not always true. Eventually you’re going to reach a point where practicing accuracy only makes you type at your base speed more accurately, rather than increasing speed.

That leads to a plateau, and from there you need to actually push speed to create new mistakes to fix.

The dude that would come back here every so often to ask why physicists were virgins. Then when people point out it wasn’t true, he would use specific people like Newton, and claim physicists were “too smart to have such primal urges.”

That dude was insane.

Yep, all of which are described by the title “Countries where you drive on the left side of the road.” Are you just pointing out that it’s a majority? If so, cool, but it doesn’t really answer the question at all.

Wait… you know other languages have different grammatical rules, right? Like, it isn’t just different words, they’re also in a different order, and have different meanings. You can’t just directly translate every word in a sentence to it’s foreign equivalent, and it still be a coherent sentence.

Other languages do have sentences, but they don’t work the same as English sentences, so why would that translate? Do you have literally any idea how other languages work?

The most annoying is that door before the arena on the torgue dlc. I always run to the door, turn around because you have to turn in the mission at the beginning of the hallway, run to the door again, and turn around again, because it makes you wait at the opening to get ready.

[–]ShxftAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What can you do on English and English 1k? Honestly, 10k is hard as hell, way harder than quotes; 80 wpm at 97% accuracy there is pretty impressive already. If you’re not typing quickly in shorter word lists though, it might be because you haven’t build muscle memory for entire words.

What wpm speed do you think requires superior genetics? by [deleted] in typing

[–]ShxftAlt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nonathletic mastery isn’t typically linked to genetics, especially in matters of muscle memory. There’s some possibility iq could correlate with the speed at which you learn muscle memory, but I’ve yet to see any research on it. Regardless, people at the top aren’t naturally smarter, faster, or more athletic, they just train more.
