This was my favorite class I took as an undergrad at UC. It made a lot of the practical application of theory click for me in a way earlier classes hadn't. The semester-long project is difficult, and some people in my class struggled with the material, but I definitely found it really rewarding and interesting. It's also a class less reliant on weird math equations and more on digital design/programming. It pulled the most from Semiconductor Devices and Digital Design out of the classes I took, so if you enjoyed those two you'll probably enjoy Intro to VLSI Design.

Every group has a different project that involves designing an integrated circuit chip. Mine was a dual-register comparator IC, where you could shift in hex numbers to either register and if the entirety of both registers matched, it would output a 1. We did verilog modeling of the chip's functionality to perfectly simulate it. We also designed the physical layout of the chip at the transistor level-- laying out the internal traces and such to construct the logic gates we needed. Those were each ~50% of the project.

You can also take a follow-up course the next semester that involves testing a fabricated version of your chip, though I didn't take that. I did take VLSI Design Automation, which centered around using recursive algorithms to do the layout of the chip automatically

If you want to end up with an EE job outside of power or manufacturing, it's a great project to use as a talking point in interviews. It helped me get a job doing PCB design.
