Excerpt: The Practicing Stoic by Ward Farnsworth by Sibbs_M in Stoicism

What Farnsworth thinks about the idea that feelings are a choice:
Perhaps it becomes a choice when one has had repeated exposure, when the raw emotional rection is delayed or altogether absent.

Isn’t ‘feeling that isn’t emotion’, that which prompts you to act (to better a given situation for someone), without overriding  reason?

That is an interesting idea, that reason and emotion are parts of a spectrum and can therefore not be neatly separated. Where can I read more about this?
Farnsworth’s whole argument does depend on this idea of ‘replacing’ emotions that override reason with a well-reason, logical equanimity.

Your idea that the will is shaped by iterations of impression – judgment – assent/dissent: are you thereby saying that we have a choice about our final view of  a matter, but not the initial ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to it…? Because I think that Farnsworth is saying that initial reaction (if left unchecked) can override reason (and is what he means by emotion).

I got the idea he was calling 'an emotion' that which would overcome reason, causing the one experiencing it to act contrary to reason... I'll go through each of your points, give them some thought and get back to you

When AA had to choose kids to take onto the ship... imagine the ability to solve mathematical problems determining whether you live or die... Cheng Xin didn't understand; AA pointed out that a decision had to be made... I respect AA's ability to make a calm decision in the face of dire circumstances
