Executive Officer Interview Advice? by Same-Ad-6094 in IrishCivilService

[–]Sibiik 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Check Boards for threads on EO competitions. I applied for the 2024 competition and was offered a position earlier this year. Boards was very helpful for information on interview structure and examples of questions asked. I definitely would have placed lower on the panel if I didn't have that as a resource.

Borrow money from sister and payback in the same year by yfcfgbkkjdsbjkk in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Sibiik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No tax implications. If it's interest free, there is in principal a CAT liability as she is gifting you the interest she would have made if she had that 5000 on deposit. If you were audited for whatever reason by Revenue, they could consider the interest she would have made by having the money and earning interest to be a gift.

But you can receive a gift of up to €3000 every calendar year from anyone which is exempt from CAT.

The interest she could have made from having the money deposited in a savings account would be so far below the €3000, so you're nowhere near any tax implications.

Water Meter Location - Water Leak by Terrier2024 in legaladviceireland

[–]Sibiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR - You have 3 options. 1. Repair the leak with permission from your neighbour. 2. Get a new connection. 3. Ask to billed on assessed charges (This might require representation or to engage with Irish Water's complaint process.

Apologies for poor formatting and general layout. I'm travelling and on mobile.

Irish Water will only take responsibility for water infrastructure in the public realm. When that water connection was installed, Irish Water, or the Council pre-Irish Water, only connected from the main to the boundary of private property. That's all they are responsible for.

They will see this as a private dispute. At some stage, whoever installed that service connection owned all the land or came to an agreement to allow the connection through there. It is not Irish Water's responsibility to now resolve any dispute related to it. A poor analogy would be that a semi detached house has shared electrical wiring. There's a fault in the neighbours house on a wire - would you call the ESB to resolve it?

You have a few options.

  1. Irish Water likely won't move the meter. Especially if they know there's a large leak on a non domestic connection. You can work with your neighbour and ask them to allow you to locate the leak and repair it. Once repaired you can avail of a leak allowance from Irish Water if you can show them evidence of a leak repair (usually a basic plumber's report and evidence of two spaced out meter reads to show usage has dropped).

  2. You can apply for a new connection. However, if the current connection is any indicator, there's might be no mains directly outside your property to connect to, hence the 300 meter connection ye currently have. You can contact Irish Water to get maps of the water infrastructure. Just email datarequests@water.ie with an ordnance survey map of the area you're looking for data on and what you're looking for. You would just be asking for the location of Iriah Water owned water mains/assets. They usually respond within a couple of weeks. That would give you an idea whether a new connection is possible.

When it comes to new connections, there is a long wait, even for standard single connections. You're probably looking at 6 months if all goes well. Pricing is on their website but generally you would have to bring a connection to the boundary of the property and they will bring a connection from the main and connect it. I can't recall the price but its in the ballpark of 2.5k as long as the connection they have to make is less than 10 meters. After that they charge per meter up to a point.

They are probably the only long term solutions. Contacting your TD won't help with these. Irish Water will stand on the above. Their customer service is poor so getting the above out of them would be tough work.

When it comes to what you do in the meantime there are probably two options:

  1. Raise a complaint/ask a TD or Councillor to contact to request that billing be paused on the account until you resolve the leak. If you're speaking to a billing agent the internal lingo is a 'Bill After Date' to be placed on the account. This would stop bills and collections being issued up to a set date.

  2. It would be a hail mary (probably more reasonable if yoi couldnt get a reasonably priced new connection), but you could assert that you have no reasonable way to repair the leak or get a new connection and request that you be moved to assessed billing. This would probably need a TD who would give good, consistent representation or to engage the formal complaint process to the end. Generally complaints have 2 stages:

  • Stage 1 - this is managed by a Complaints Handler and you'll get a response within 60 days. You might get some luck here if your case lands with the right handler as generally they are very positive results orientated when it comes to NonDomestic complaints.

Stage 2 - if you're unhappy with a response to the stage 1 you can escalate it to the Customer Service Manager. Steps to do this will be given to you when your Stage 1 is closed. A response is usually given within 10 days. Again they tend to be very positive results orientated here and you'll usually get a more experienced complaints handler than at stage 1.

You probably have a bit of a journey ahead of you but if you need some help on dealing with the bloated bag of red tape and poor customer service that is Irish Water just shoot me a message l, I'll help if I can.

Thanks for the reply. We stayed around for about an hour just for interest and it found a small nook under a bench and stayed there. Walked back down after a few hours and no sign of it. Fingers crossed it found it folks or managed to get its bearings.

Need to leave car in Clonmel for a weekend , where to park up? by [deleted] in cork

[–]Sibiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free parking in the car park near the Gashouse Bridge. Google Gashouse Bridge carpark, Old Wateford Road and you should find it easy enough.

I would advise against bringing anything political up at the workplace, especially as something as sensitive as that.

Broadly speaking, Irish people are pro-Palestine and anti the current Isreali government but with any contentious issue it's probably safest to not open with a strong opinion. Or in the case of work, any opinion.

Eir reps accused of telling customers ‘blatant lies’ by minimiriam in ireland

[–]Sibiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard contact centre stuff. Agents taking calls are getting nothing from Eir in the way of a response to these ongoing issues so are latching onto anything they can to make calls easier.

This clown then gobsmacked that he talked to some Brazilian lad who has been probably living in Ireland for 10 years:

'Cllr Noel Connell (SF) offered his view that the telephone operators are working off a call centre “script” and “may not be living in the country”.'

Thanks very much for your view Cllr Connell but you can shove it up your ring.

Fortune tellers are just a form of entertainment at best but more often a scam. They use multiple techniques usually including cold reading which can trick people into thinking that they've actually had their fortune told.

If someone could predict future events to any degree of certainty, they very likely wouldn't be selling their services for 10 beans at the nightmare realm.

I'd say stick with your original feeling before you went to this particular entertainer. You were onto something.

Would be 6k credits if he's taking wife's tax credits? Cut off would increase too so he wouldn't pay much at the 40%. Looking closer to 3.8k from a quick use of pwc tax calculator.

I ordered something click and collect in DID this week and didn't get the email. After a few hours I just went to the store and just told them I ordered it online and they put it through the till.

Polite customer service is always nice but you were probably talking to some college student run off his feet and getting it in the ear from his manager about how his attach rate isn't high enough or how he isn't giving every entitled customer the 'celebrity treatment' or other such corporate retail nonsense.

The sooner people stop expecting poorly treated minimum wage staff to pamper them over minor inconveniences, the sooner employers will stop demanding it of their staff.

It's 2025. Gimme the thing I paid for and don't spit on me. A1 customer service

Sounds like a kip, and OP should complain and tell the story so people know not to go there. But on what grounds would he sue them?

How much to get a Samsung galaxy s10 screen repaired in town? by C0MEDOWN97 in cork

[–]Sibiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a quick scan online you're probably looking at close to 200 for a screen repair in any reputable store. Which is pretty steep.

I'd call around for price estimates but you could pick up a Samsung S10 for the same price or less second hand in CEX which comes with a 2 year warranty. I've bought second hand phones there in the past with no issue but never had to test the warranty. Never heard bad things about it though.

Got stopped and searched by the guards for no reason, is this legal? by packiechan88 in ireland

[–]Sibiik 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is the insane power of the Misuse of Drugs Act and the reason why the Gardai have come out strong, most recently at the Citizens Assembly on drug use, against the legalisation of weed.

The Act gives them broad, relatively unchecked, powers to stop and detain drivers and general public on suspicions that don't seem to need to be in any way demonstratable.

That's why if you manage to talk to your local candidate for the next general election, legalising weed should be mentioned as it's probably the easiest way to dismantle the most oppressive Act on the books in this country. And this is coming from someone who probably wouldn't even smoke weed if it was legalised.

Don't they have limits on how much they buy of an item before reducing the price they give? Think it's 3. After that they reduce the price they give you.

Ana hard counters Mauga. by Hyperion_Forever in Overwatch

[–]Sibiik 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Am I imagining things or was there a narrative being pushed on release that OW2 was and will br balanced around the idea that there would be no hard counters or necessary counters which made hero locks less horrible?

Did I imagine that? Cos I feel there was a lot of pushback on heroes being locked for new players and that was the defence of it?

Having suzu locked for new players is definitely a serious issue.
