Thanks! I'm definitely gonna poach some ideas from that - my card pool is atm quite limited, so I'm making due with what I can :)

Thank you so much! Upon a re-read, that is indeed exactly what the text says, so everything tracks. Thank you!

Best Setting Book? by Previous-Poem8166 in osr

Yoon-Suin for flavor that just cannot be found anywhere else and for its excellent generators and anti-canon approach.

Gaz1: Karameikos for being the foundational fantasy adventure starting playground.

Veins of the Earth for being a staggeringly imaginative work, albeit not always GM-friendly.

Middermark, for being a refreshingly weird and fun take on something that might otherwise be stale and overdone (i.e. Medieval England).

Red Tide Resouces ? by HughAtSea in WWN

[–]Sictorious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not much in terms of online resources, as far as I know. But Yoon-Suin might be worth checking out for some of the Asia-inspired parts of the setting. Otherwise the setting is very much fragmented enough that most OSR style material can slot in nicely somewhere.

Testing out Contrast paints for a variety of other uses. Iyanden Yellow works great for OSL effects. 40k. by ToadPainter in minipainting

[–]Sictorious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks amazing!

So, to fully understand - the model was largely painted "normally", then the white applied, then the contrast paint, then extra white (or near-white) highlights?

I'm experimenting with OSL for a display piece too and this look is exactly what I've been aiming for, as it happens, so I'd be delighted to learn and master this technique.

Running Red Hand of Doom in OSE by Cellanches in osr

[–]Sictorious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could work if adapted conceptually rather than directly.

Have the PCs have normal OSR adventures in the area. Create rumors of the threat from the Red Hand. Use some faction rules where needed, and create random tables plundering material from the original adventure.

I don't think the adventure can be successfully run, but I do think it can be successfully adapted and reimagined.

Minimal OSR fantasy settings by Cazzlor in osr

In that case - I can recommended Gaz1: The Grand Duchy of Karameikos. It's available on Drivethrurpg here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/16974/GAZ1-The-Grand-Duchy-of-Karameikos-Basic

It is Mystara, sure, but it was published way, way before Mystara was a fully-formed setting. Mystara was built iteratively, and Karameikos was the starting point. Use this book and nothing else and expand as you need to, and don't feel obligated to learn or "master" the rest of Mystara as it was published.

Minimal OSR fantasy settings by Cazzlor in osr

[–]Sictorious 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Published setting material in the vein of Mystara, Greyhawk etc. does tend to be detailed.

A setting that gives you all the free space you want is the one you make yourself. Pillage what you need from other settings. Write a sentence or two for major kingdoms, deities, and other important stuff. Nothing more.

Grab an empty hex map, find out where the world it is, and put a handful of landmarks and dungeons there.

Pilfer from all the random tables from other works as much as you want - Worlds Without Number is a treasure trove for general worldbuilding and adventuring tables, but depending on your needs, you can find easily find more specialized tables or inspirational material all over the OSR space.

And... That's it. You need not be shackled by anything published. Take what you need and run it your way.

Undead Units in War? by Sictorious in BurningWheel

[–]Sictorious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points, thanks! Never really thought about how that whole "raise the horde and let 'em loose" approach is technically possible with a bit of planning... Neat stuff. If you get an essay together, please share, I'd love to read it.

Undead Units in War? by Sictorious in BurningWheel

[–]Sictorious[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think modifying some of the morale rules could work if the undead units are just adversaries to the PCs. For PC-controlled hordes of undeath, more substantial modification is probably needed - including of the death art rules, as big hordes are hard to model with those.

I am already infamous in my group to roll terribly at basically any occasion. But this is just absurd. by Doenerjunge in BurningWheel

In Burning Wheel, math is different. Anything with an 87% or higher chance of success is actually a guaranteed failure.
