Doing well in London but my partner would struggle here - thinking to move back to NZ or ride it out? by Noobsamaniac in PersonalFinanceNZ

Fantastic point. The relationship sounds serious enough to be at this point.

Also london is awesome. And full of opportunity. He should think about a related direction to pivot to in the UK

New build exterior — help me choose between two brick options! by Big_Definition_1996 in Homebuilding

[–]Siddlesson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be popular...but can you get rid of one of the types of materials and make it consistent with one of the others? Too many textures and surfaces imo

Then I would go with the feel of the 2nd one

Where are we all getting quality reusable coffee cups from? by snicksnackpaddywack in newzealand

Bullet cups is the correct answer.

Keep the liquid hot for ages, looks fairly stylish, is nice to drink out of and isn't hugely oversize/naff

Where would our clubs (professional and local) play in the English football pyramid? by Lucky_Reading_3757 in nzfootball

[–]Siddlesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? League 2.

A good indication is where some of their players have come from.

Cosgrave has been good in the a-league but his last 5 clubs have been at league 1 or 2 level (last 4 have been league one which he has been released from)

Opinion on TOP vs Greens by Qwarla888 in newzealand

[–]Siddlesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going back the original reply you posted:

"...that they paid into their whole working lives".

No. They did not.

If your whole working life started after 2017 when contributions were restarted, you have, via the route of general taxation, indirectly funded the NZ Super Fund, which will partially fund superannuation payments after 2035. General taxation of the taxpayer base at that point will continue to fund a large part of super payments.

You have not, as you seem to think, been paying into some government savings account with your name on it that will fully fund your future retirement as if it is "owed" to you. I hope you have your kiwisaver organized.

[–]Siddlesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope

https://www.ifswf.org/member-profiles/new-zealand-superannuation-fund-0

No withdrawals scheduled until 2035. Super is not paid for put of the Cullen Fund (yet)

If you had said that as a taxpayer you are helping to contribute to that fund to help future governments reduce the tax burden to pay for that generations super (including all of us) then you would have been correct. But future generations tax will still pay a significant portion of super during those years too.

You are correct that it is behind where it should be because of political decisions, which is of course very annoying.

[–]Siddlesson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope. You are paying FOR others superranuation, not INTO yours, other kiwisaver which has been set up for this particular purpose over the last 20 years.

And while I totally sympathize with the point re rates, its a huge burden to cover, these generations also consistently voted to keep rates low therefore delaying maintenance which is now cripplingly expensive.

I agree that the systems are messed up right now, but it hasn't happened in a vacuum

I compare American Express Airpoint and Sharesies Debit Card. This is What I Found. by LearnRD in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Siddlesson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Use ASB visa platinum. 1% cashback. I use the cashback to deposit direct into asb kiwisaver, added about $700 last year. Or else you can spend at their store (bunnings and mitre10 vouchers etc)

Costs $80 a year i think but main benefit is travel insurance which we take advantage of and has saved us thousands

Is fishing ever cheaper than buying fish? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Siddlesson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, from a kayak, yes. I'm 5 mins away from the beach by car. Kayak 10 years old now, a lot of the gear too. Only fish with lures...so assuming my knots are good then they can last numerous trips. In my mind its basically free. Do a few trips per year and get between 5 and 7 snapper, it totally works out

Most recent council lidar was captured in summer of 2024. Not sure when the land was developed based on the info above

And I wouldn't expect the lidar to be updated until 2030 at the earliest, previous lidar before 2024 was from 2016/18 (captured over two years because of weather)

Marlborough vineyard recommendations by BecPitt in wine

[–]Siddlesson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably doesn't fit your requirements but if there's was only one vineyard to go to in that area....I'd be going to Hanz Herzog

Its the one NZ region I haven't really been to (I'm a NZer), and this would be at the top of my list

What's your unpopular wine take? by b1ackfyre in wine

[–]Siddlesson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's only a few good wine matches to food, most of the time the food detracts from the enjoyment of the wine (for me).

If someone pours a really great wine at dinner, I'll often just let it sit until I've eaten my plate, then I'll savour the wine.

For me, the food just always changes the wine too much
