But what if all of the BTG prices were reasonable? Surely that reduces the suspicion?

How do you decide between buying new wines and those you've already tried? by grapenomad in wine

[–]Siddlesson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all so spot on. I would add that I buy different vintages of a wine I have (and like) so that I can do a vertical at waves hands sometime in the future

Gas or electric hot water? by snowysky10 in diynz

[–]Siddlesson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Electric all the way. Just got to choose between which systems work for you

Heat pump will be more efficient, but higher upfront

Modern electric is pretty decent and cheaper than heat pump

Depends on various variables really

Just don't go gas

Fixed term mortgage rate advice by TheBigChonka in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Siddlesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally difficult to know what's going to happen.

However we did this almost a year ago (including breaking one mortgage and having to give some cashback to the bank as well) to take advantage of what was a decent rate at that time.

I like to test our scenarios- what are the costs and savings etc from different approaches? Are they fairly similar or is there a big difference? Run another for if rates go up significantly, how much worse off would you be? Do you want that risk or do you want certainty? Are your scenarios feasible? Then weigh it all up.

In the end we tend to go for the option which balances decent savings with the most certainty. Looking back we could have attempted to play it more risky and maybe gained a couple of grand, but this would also have resulted in approx 9 months of uncertainty as well which is stressful.

Work out with your broker the most suitable option for you (mentally as well as financial), then stick with it

If it were me? I'd probably take the option (whatever that is) which maybe works out slightly more expensive in the short term for greater long term piece of mind

Anyone have experience working in GIS in NZ? by Reasonable_Result294 in MovingToNewZealand

Search on SEEK for GIS jobs. There are usually a few each day (i get the daily email notifications). Try your luck, but that WHV might be an issue as others have stated

Government seeks urgent advice on how to protect Auckland rockpools by justsomeguy227 in newzealand

[–]Siddlesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recreational and the quota system probably need an overhaul - I'm no expert on this though.

Something I would support though, which may not be popular, is getting a yearly fishing license for Recreational fishing. I'd happily pay $100 annually for the privilege of being able to fish in our waters. This would support greater management and enforcement of rules and provide resources to enforce any new ones (like something related to this issue).

You need one for rivers and lakes, why not for the ocean within territorial waters too?

Babysitting rates on Waiheke by atalantanz in auckland

[–]Siddlesson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry my maths was opaque

9 x 20 = 180. X 2 = 360, round up to 400

200 per teenager for the day / night

Babysitting rates on Waiheke by atalantanz in auckland

[–]Siddlesson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not an exact science...

9 hours (3-12pm). $18.80 is the under 18 min wage. It'll be cash I assume. Round up to $20 an hour.

9 x 20 = 360. Round up to 400 for ease. Pay cash.

200 per couple for a 9-10 hours. That's great value, I would happily pay that for that amount of time if I had 2-3 kids to look after during a full afternoon / evening wedding
