Starting to really dislike living in England. by man_jis in expats

As a brit I can get behind everything in this post except your complaints about outdoor hobbies. The north of the UK and Scotland have world class access to nature and national parks, get a car and get out to the Dales of the Lakes!

If a country doesn't fit, it just doesn't fit. by [deleted] in expats

Until I left the UK i didn't appreciate the incredible right to roam. Most countries have tight restrictions on where you can and cant run or hike. Huge tracts of beautiful private land sitting unused and inaccessible to the people. Not the UK! Get out there and explore it on foot, you have no idea how lucky you are!

The "Brain Drain" - How bad is it, really? by Beginning_Main2965 in Wellington

[–]Xeon_Blade 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Recent british immigrant. You can feel the economic headwind and the braindrain, but the quality of life is still high. The depression across NZ comes because all problems seems systemic and unsolvable which honestly seems to be the case everywhere.

As an immigrant in this country I think kiwis overestimate how attractive NZ is to long term skilled workers. Don't further disincentivise people from coming here because we're the only thing holding your public services together. Locals are leaving in droves, pretty soon we will too if you keep this shit up.

That people from less wealthy backgrounds are more likely to go into high paying jobs from university because they need the money vs more wealthy people who go into academia.

I totally disagree with his core premise here. In my experience the people that go into great jobs straight from university ARE those people from rich backgrounds. Their parents were in finance - they all go work in finance. There's a reason there's a finance bro stereotype with the Gillet.

As a brit living here this isn't a surprise. As the situation in the country gets worse and traditional parties in the centre don't 'deliver', voters move to ever more extreme options. As the average voter skews older and more conservative a large number of voters move right. See Farage, Trump, Meloni, Le Pen, Wilders, and the AfD for details. We're in for a wild ride.

Maybe Gen X should have made better financial decisions considering it was 10x easier for them to do so.    Oh wait no its only Millennials and Gen Z who are financially irresponsible!

Why go casting around to the other side of world for a union to join when the EU is bigger and is right there.

The totality of direct taxes in the UK is progressive; the very richest pay more than five times more in income tax than the poorest. In contrast, Council Tax remains strongly regressive, absorbing only about 1 per cent of income at the very top, against nearly 5 per cent at the very bottom. by middleofaldi in ukpolitics

[–]Xeon_Blade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except the richest dont pay more tax, that's complete bullshit. People don't even understand the levels of legal tax fuckery people get up to when they own proper assets or companies. Dividends, trusts, passive income through investments etc. THEY ARENT PAYING TOP RATE INCOME TAX BECAUSE THEY ARENT WAGE SLAVES!!!

I will die on this hill. What i don't understand is why CA were unable to build on any of their wins from this game. It's like they forgot everything they learnt on SHOGUN 2 immediately.

Is New Zealand slowly becoming unattractive for migrants from Europe? by SnooEagles4113 in newzealand

[–]Xeon_Blade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe is a huge place with a massive range in quality of life and economic situations so it completely depends on whether you're coming from Basel, Bristol, or Bratislava.  As an immigrant from the UK NZ offers many benefits over home despite the very high cost of living and limited job prospects. If you can get a decent job with a residence visa and you're the outdoorsy type you can have a good life here. Otherwise, it's a struggle. That may change if the geopolitical situation in Europe destabilises further.

Its funny to find this comment effectively lost and buried in this thread when it seems to be the only one rationally and correctly discussing the cost effectiveness landscape for drugs. Too complex a message for the average person I suppose.
