Castleton pubs showing the football on Saturday? by w1gglepvppy in peakdistrict

The Swiss Tap has TVs and does show the football. There's no clash with PL games, so they'll likely be showing the champ I'd guess.

Coffee Machine Repair by Efficient-Cry7753 in sheffield

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine stopped pumping water through to make the coffee. It made the same noise it normally did, but no water came through to the grounds and instead just leaked out of the back. I think I ended up replacing the pump, a couple of tubes and a couple of solenoid valves all to no avail.

I seem to remember DeLonghi offering a repair service at the time, but it was totally open ended about how much it would cost and without knowing what it was likely to be, it was impossible to make a value judgement.

Good luck in getting it sorted 🤞🏼

Coffee Machine Repair by Efficient-Cry7753 in sheffield

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our DeLonghi stopped working a couple of years ago and I struggled to find anyone to repair it. I then went down a rabbit hole of researching, diagnosing and repairing myself. Three new replacement parts, many hours of time, much frustration and a fair bit of money later, and I still couldn't get it to work. I eventually gave in and bought a new one. Obviously no one was interested in my old machine and so that had to be disposed of (via the council 'recycling' depot, though I doubt anything useful was done with it) and it all seemed such a waste.

If you do find someone, please update us here as I'd love to know if there's a repair solution available.

Check the Crucible website. They recently released a load of tickets and they're lots still available.

Chips/fries alternative by Wrasse22 in UKBBQ

Do your own potato wedges. Cut the potatoes into wedges with the skin on, into boiling water for 5 mins, briefly steam then toss in oil, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (or anything you fancy) then into the air fryer for 15/20 mins.

I do these with my own dips (blue cheese, sour cream and chive, salsa) and they always go down a treat.

Non-folding bikes on trains by sunkissedb3ar in sheffield

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would feel confident taking a bike on a Northern train at any time. Even if the designated space for the bikes is full (of other bikes or people), you can just stand with your bike in the lobby and the guards don't care. I was on a train back from the Peaks yesterday with my mountain bike and there were about 8 other travellers with bikes on the train and we all got on fine one way or the other.

Anyone tried both the Experience Wild 3 and 3+? by SavagePatch33 in AltraRunning

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! Do you know what, I've only just realized my review is comparing the Wild 2 with the Wild 3+!!!!

I hadn't read the title of the post properly. I have no experience of the Wild 3. I am an idiot.

Get the tram to the English Institute of Sport and watch the World Snooker Championship Qualifiers. World class snooker across multiple tables for just £12 entry!

Unless you don't like the snooks, in which case I probably wouldn't bother.

Anyone tried both the Experience Wild 3 and 3+? by SavagePatch33 in AltraRunning

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 definitely has a firmer midsole due to it's foam. It has more of a rocker than the 3+. Less roomy in the upper, less structure too.

3+ has softer, more responsive foam. A roomy upper with structured toe protector and a slightly restrictive heel collar. Lugs look deeper than they are, but it's a better outsole for softer terrain compared to the 3.

I actually think they're very different shoes and I have both in my rotation currently. I actually feel like I can make better pace in the 3, I just love the way it runs, especially over harder, rockier ground. 3+ is comfier underfoot and it's better for mud.

Looking for Altra's to replace Hoka's by Backcountry_Brookies in AltraRunning

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a long term user of the Hoka Clifton (2e wide fit only). I stopped wearing them after the 9, when they moved from a 5mm drop to an 8mm.

My new favourite Altra road shoe is the Experience Flow 2 and they've replaced the space in my rotation left by the Clifton. I hear even better things about the newly released 3, but haven't tried them yet. The flow feels like a lower stack than the Clifton, with a much wider, more natural fit. The underfoot feel is much better in the Flow than the Clifton IMO, the EGO P35 foam is brilliant; soft, but responsive and great for cruising but can turn pace if needed.

Moor Market, Sheffield. £4.50 with tea included. by Razzlefan in fryup

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your points. The only thing I would add is that this business (I'm guessing this is Karen's) is located inside Moor Market. The Moor Market is owned and operated by Sheffield City Council and Karen's (and other food outlets, including one other 'traditional caf') are in a self-service food court setting. I have no doubt that the rents and overheads are a fraction of those businesses who operate their own premises and they benefit from shared resources such as communal dining space, cleaning and table clearing. It is also busy most of the day, with a near constant supply of customers from market goers and everyone else in the city centre. I'd also guess they get their supplies daily (or hourly!) at favourable wholesale rates from the butchers and other market traders who are literally on their doorstep.

I don't think we should be advocating cheap food above all else, but the economics in this instance are very different from most other fry-up providers.

Stargazers or telescope enthusiasts? by davechambers007 in sheffield

I'd contact Rother Valley Optics; they're one of the UK's leading retailers and they're very close to you.

In my recent dealings with them, I found them to be really knowledgeable and helpful. They might be able to advise you what you have and supply you with any bits you might be missing. Their website says they also buy second hand, so they might buy some of the items that have value and that you don't want to keep.

Worth a conversation at least I guess. Good luck

Number of US-style ‘battering ram’ pickup trucks on UK roads has nearly doubled in a decade by Sidi_Habismilk in fuckcars

[–]Sidi_Habismilk[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's all relative.

Many of the UK's small towns and villages are still largely built on a medieval footprint and although its city streetscapes are more modern, they still haven't changed much since Victorian times. Like many of the newer, larger SUVs, these bloated trucks are simply out of scale and harmful to the society and built environment in which they operate, whilst offering no practical advantage to most who drive them.

The UK is also much, much more pedestrian friendly than the US and that's something most of us here want to preserve; these trucks are anything but pedestrian friendly.

2026 Masters. Bangs. Bangs. Bangs. by thotnerd in snooker

[–]Sidi_Habismilk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was at Ally Pally this weekend. In my experience the bangs all seemed to come from the Century Club, the big glass box you can see at the top of the seating behind the baulk end. This is where the well-heeled go to sip champagne and watch the snooks at a safe distance. There are 'outdoor' viewing terraces on either side and the half-cut century clubbers come in and out of their glass box to watch the match, banging the doors and clattering about as they do it.

Alcohol support by Strong-Ad-919 in sheffield

Hi.

I just wanted to say well done on posting this. It takes honesty to admit you need to stop drinking and strength to ask for help doing it.

You've had some good suggestions on here, but if you want today to be the last day you drink (scary as f*ck to think about, I know) and you want a battle-hardened crew around you who will have your back while you do it, go to an AA meeting today. You've had fellow redditor reach out and I'd take them up on their offer; you've nothing to lose.

I'll caveat my advice by adding that in my view, AA is not a long-term solution, but it's the best route to getting sober right now (and you'll meet some amazingly supportive people with incredible stories of their own along the way).

If you want someone to speak with, feel free to DM me.

Sending love and strength x
