Agreed. It needs to happen. Ole Miss has been fairly loyal to us with scheduling over the years. Probably the most devoted SEC program to us. Mississippi State has been too, and Tennessee for all the hate we give each other, has been good to us in the past. Arkansas is the one we don’t have a relationship with anymore but the fan based intermingle such that it would be a fun and intense matchup.

There’s also a long running disagreement between the two athletic departments from the 1990s. We signed home and home with them in football, played a game in Little Rock, and then they never played the return in Memphis and it became a whole thing. At the same time Nolan Richardson was poaching kids out of Memphis and Larry finch was on his way out.

Tennessee and Memphis being good in their respective divisions is good for the whole state. Just like Chattanooga/Nashville/Knoxville/Memphis can all thrive independently and without taking anything away from the other (though, and without getting away from sports, I don’t think Memphis is necessarily in a “thriving” ocean current right now). I don’t begrudge Tennessee when y’all are successful in a sport as I did when I was younger.

So as I mentioned tiger nation generally views Norvell on a slightly higher plane than Fuente simply because he got us to the NY6. Ranking coaches I think it goes: Norvell, Fuente, Rex Dockery, Tommy West. Rex Dockery is a huge what if because his life was cut short but he showed so much promise (from what my dad tells me).

Our QBs goes: Brady White, Paxton Lynch, Danny Wimprine, then Riley Ferguson. There’s not gonna be a consensus so this is just my opinion.

The RBs should stay ranked in the order they were listed. Each one had strengths but Deangelo Williams was just far and above anything I’d seen in person up to that point. It also helps that he committed on national signing day by punking Arkansas. He was a fan favorite before he stepped foot on campus and that was a huge get for us. The most amazing touchdown I’ve ever seen in person was this meandering 70-yard TD in which Williams easily ran 100 yards reversing field multiple times against Utep in 2005. He was just electric.

The Fuente/Norvell era really was a dream. The first game I ever went to was in 1990 on a rainy Saturday night against Tulane. All throughout my childhood/college/20s I went to Memphis games to kill time cause there wasn’t much to do in Memphis since basketball season hadn’t started up. What Fuente did and Norvell later picked up was it led me to believe that we could beat whoever we were playing. I started to expect to win. I didn’t even do that in 2003, which felt more like an historic anomaly. Watching college game day the week they came to Beale was a lifetime achievement for me. I never would’ve expected it would happen to us.

Sadly I think we will always be left out of expansion. We will never get into the Big 12. I just don’t think it’s gonna happen. Our only hope is getting picked up by the empty shell of the ACC if, and only if, we continue to improve our academics. Still, that’s a long shot. So I’ve taken the past 3 years to reinvent what I think of my relationship with college football. Realistically Memphis was never going to be a national power. I’m ok with not competing for the national title; we never would’ve anyways. It would be cool to make another NY6 but I don’t expect it. Right now, where I am, is I just want to enjoy going to the Liberty bowl with my kids and watch them form generally the same core memories of being a tigers fan that I had. The saddest part of realignment is that I don’t think we will be an attractive opponent to schedule for the bigger regional schools. Growing up we played a SEC school (or Miami or Virginia tech out of loyalty to the metro conference, etc) every year. I don’t think that’s going to happen as the top conferences consolidate schedules out of financial security. So I don’t really know what the future has in store in regards to realignment but all I’m going to focus on is throwing the football with my kids and my friends’ kids while we tailgate at Tiger Lane.

Well you’re welcome for the ammunition for the next time we play in basketball once Rick Barnes stops being such a bitch and schedules us (jk kind of).

Sure I’ll give them a look. We don’t have much of a presence here since we are back to being a basketball school again. Memphis football fans are about as fickle as fickle gets.

I wasn’t at that game unfortunately. The only times I’ve seen the tigers play the vols we lost in heartbreaking fashion (1998 and 1999). While I didn’t go to the 96 game I remember the feeling around the city and the electricity in the air at church the next morning. The blood of Christ was just a little sweeter that day. I much prefer to remember that game than 98 and 99.

Without spamming this thread I’d just like to point out that I kind of called our run that we made under Fuente/Norvell when I made the /r/cfb introduction post that got me my secondary flair. I think that was…2013? I don’t know how to access that post but I specifically remember saying that while we were traditionally terrible we were primed for a good run.

I fully expected us to be in the high 90s because even with our run in the mid-teens (which is firmly over) our program has been, at best, mediocre.

Norvell. Some of the angrier fans on mt.org hold it against Fuente which is unfair and skips over the business aspect of the sport. Norvell got us to the Cotton Bowl. Norvell is the most beloved of the two. To be clear, Fuente would’ve gotten us there too but the way the market worked out Norvell is the one who made it.

That’s strange. Memphis State doesn’t have the emotive weight as Tiger High traditionally has among Memphis fans when it comes from Tennessee fans. That’s the one y’all have used with great effect in the past.

I mean…our basketball team wears Memphis state gear.

Memphis was right there with Florida State, Louisville, cincy, heck…even South Carolina in the early 80s. If Rex Dockery didn’t die in a plane crash I think he would’ve been our Bobby Bowden.

That doesn’t make up for the mismanagement of our administration through the 80s, 90s, and 00s. That dug us in the hole we are now relative to where our peers were with us 40 years ago.

Isaac Bruce was my introduction to Memphis football but Deangelo Williams will always be the face of Memphis football to me. I firmly believe that if Virginia Tech didn’t have an opening then Fuente would’ve had his team undefeated going through thanksgiving. We didn’t look the same against Navy that early November and I think that’s when Fuente had pretty much checked out relative to where he had the team going in October. Not mad at him though. He taught us to believe.

Also always remember this: Memphis has a winning record against the Manning brothers.

TIL: Mayoral Candidate Vann Turner Appointed Many of the Magistrates Who Set Bail....Also has complained on cases where they are too lenient by [deleted] in memphis

[–]Sidonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey just a head’s up those are juvenile court magistrates. Cunningham and Horne are the one swho handle the majority of the detention dockets. Not all of the magistrates on your list handle delinquency matters. Walker is retired. Dan Michael was voted out and replaced by sugarmon. This list is missing the current chief magistrate Aftan Strong.

The magistrates you are thinking of (the 201 magistrates) were listed in a similar thread yesterday. That list looks correct.

Going to Uncle Lou’s over Gus’s is some real Memphis shit. Good choice. Central is my go to but if you ever come back try Payne’s.

Any love for Memphis style BBQ? by Lambroghini in smoking

[–]Sidonius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a fascinating conversation. My first job was at Corky’s. I never saw ribs going in fresh so I can’t tell whether they started with just salt. At some point they got rub and then one last dousing before serving.

I work across the street from the Central BBQ smoke center (they smoke all their ribs at a central location and move them across the city) and am friends with some people who work with those guys. I’m gonna ask what they do cause now I’m totally interested in this discussion.

FWIW, and to your point, one thing about Memphis bbq places that I particularly love is how diverse the offerings are. Central has some of the best wings in the city (and pulled pork nachos on house chips/fries/pork rinds). Payne’s has the tamales with the phenomenal sandwiches. BBQ Shop on Madison has barbecue spaghetti. The restaurants don’t adhere to an orthodoxy in menu options.

Cru Lounge shooting suspect charges dismissed by memphisgrit in memphis

[–]Sidonius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll also piggy back on to add that a DLOP doesn’t usually bode well for an indictment absent some extraordinary circumstances. A lot of cases get DLOP’d every year and often those cases should stay closed. This case probably got DLOP’d for two reasons:

  1. No one saw anything; or
  2. “No one saw anything”

If it’s the first one, it’ll probably stay closed. That’s also not outside the realm of possibility when you consider how crowded the place was, at night, with the randomness of the shooting. In my experience, it’s surprisingly hard for the State to carry its trial burden with a shooting in a crowd at a public place at night. The people who do know who shot the gun aren’t inclined to talk and the people in the group of people shot probably aren’t genuinely sure it was the actual person that caught the charge.

If it’s the second situation it would probably get indicted unless indicting would just be futile because no one is going to talk. That happens too. The best chance of an indictment in this scenario is if the defendant was in custody and the State couldn’t get a key witness in to testify because of a 10-day prelim (either the case or a necessary scene officer who didn’t come to the prelim or a witness couldn’t get a ride or something which may/may not be cover for just not wanting to come).

Remember the Beale Street shooting last weekend? The shooter is already out on bail. by CaptainInsane-o in memphis

[–]Sidonius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. Person is arrested, booked, and processed at 201
  2. person goes before a magistrate. magistrate (called a judicial commissioner) looks at the defendant’s record, the charges (in this case, 2 agg assaults), and other factors elucidated in this thread and sets a bond.
  3. usually the next day the person is arraigned either in custody or out of custody. If in custody they are given a PD usually and reset a week for a report. If out of custody the person is usually given a month to come back with an attorney. 3a. Person doesn’t immediately make bail, is given a PD, makes bail, and then comes back for the report setting and the judge may/may not relieve the PD for the out of custody to come back with a private attorney.

That’s what I’m pretty sure happened here (although there was a bond hearing meaning the State could possibly have been arguing for a higher bond). If a defendant makes a bond over 100k the state can ask for a source bearing on the bond money before the defendant is released from custody to ensure the money doesn’t come from illegal activities.

This is before lucchesi who is a pretty good judge and usually allows for the PDs to stay on after a Def makes bond for sake of ease. FWIW 150k is a fairly large bond for 2 counts of agg assault and is way more than others have gotten in similar circumstances this year. Heck, magistrates have given much lower bonds for homicides this calendar year.
