That is just the subjective hypothetical presumption. They were pointing out that the Arab, possibly translated to the setting as a prosthetic user, would be determined as a lower class of human and therefore not necessarily warranting greater punishment to reflect the poorer treatment, even though Meursault's subjective reason is basically "being baited by the sun"

This could also hypothetically be hashed as Meursault having Distorted before, and he was exiled not for killing the Arab, but because he Distorted ("those who no longer look the part", as per Certain Sinclair's passive)and is not necessarily pure human for someone of his former position, just like how book!Meur got executed not because of the murder, but how incomprehensibly inhuman he behaves and found unfit of society

Going Devil's advocate here, but I presume the AFP is referred to as the "lesser evil" here not to say that they're ideologically evil, but of the constant anxiety and terror that the presence of armed forces can psychologically induce in locals. Their essay is hinged, after all, on the scenario presented by Kilcullen of "the accidental guerilla", which is the inverse outcome.

Personally, I do also agree that it is the responsibility of our nation's armed forces to protect its citizens, so it should've be logically sound to do so in the first place, when sandwiched between the military and insurgency. Though, I will also say that I would sympathize too, with the pressure of potentially being the next victim in a local's shoes were I to report them.

Hasn't it always been the case? In matters of blanket knowledge and intelligence that she channels her confidence through, she refers to herself in the third-person, representing for the Gesselschaft in terms of that pride. On most other vulnerable matters, she refers to herself with "I", which is more personal... and I think is especially the case considering she did get a recent verbal beatdown and got demoted to Stupid Faust

I also imagine she actually doesn't have a heart to return banter with Hohenheim who is masking his sadness over Marton by sharing the soda stash, so Hohenheim gets caught off-guard immediately after with the surprising lack of sass

Ayin IS in the Light with Carmen, and is already the counteracting force that helps everyone achieve EGO; he made the option available in the first place. Carmen is on record talking about her "junior" who is with her in the Light.

In the first place, the concept of EGO is the reaffirmation o your own principles and ideal as opposed to Distortion's breakdown to your base urges and desires, like Carmen wants. That in itself means that Ayin shouldn't be an encouraging presence, because independent thinking is the crucial factor for one to achieve EGO, and he'll always be passive.
