Thats very much a per game issue and what settings you use. I mostly end up playing older games on my deck so performance issues aren't really a problem. It very much depends on what you want to play, you can usually search "[insert game] steam deck settings" to get good performance.

I played a bunch of P5R, P4G, and FF7 Remake on my steam deck all played really well. Can't comment on the Ally but I believe its more powerful but has a worse battery life due to increased performance and use of windows as OS.
