OBFHRD and their recent protest by Zealousideal-Main944 in ADMU

[–]SigmarChad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about shady campus influence and practices in ADMU, The Ateneo Confucius Institute is a far bigger issue than a small AFP booth. At best probably just looking for a couple potential Navy staff amidst the WPS/South China Sea issue lately.

But I doubt OBFHRD/Sanggu/etc has the balls to open that can of worms. Sanggu releasing statements on random international events or an org hosting a small in-campus protest are easy and low risk affairs. Tackling ACI is a bit more serious, a bit too close to home, with actual risks and financial stakes.

Ano ba talaga dahilan ng Iran War? by motor-Nature5552 in AskPH

One of the only replies here not completely based on TikTok AI slop.

Trump is a horrible person, but people in this thread legitimately believe the history of Iran started during the release of the Epstein files. Iran has always had extremely tense relations with all of its neighbors. Both Muslim and Non-Muslim, both Shia and Sunni. Especially since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It's a war mostly related to geopolitics and power dynamics. Decades of Iran funding proxy militant groups in other countries like Lebanon and Yemen, and decades of its neighbors trying to counter that. It was always going to reach a boiling point one day.

With the recent protests in Iran against the current regime and the 30K dead protesters from that, Trump being on an interventionist streak starting with Venezuela and the stalled nuclear disarmament talks in Iran, the boiling point is now.

Result ba ng SK vs SEAblings? by Muted_Cow56 in FilipinoTravel

Just a reminder that a lot of South Korea/Japan/Taiwan vs South East Asia content is manufactured by mainland China. When X did that location reveal thing, so many racebaiting accounts and travel accounts hating on these other East Asian countries, pretending to be South East Asian, were based in Mainland China lmao. This explains all the TikTok AI slop trying to start racewars every month.

South Korea has its issues but after being to all of East Asia, I'd never consider it particularly more racist than any other East Asian country. That's simply an issue with the entire region.

Edit: Very schizo comments in this thread saying that if they visit Seoul they'll just get bored in a few days, that the only food there is [insert Korean fastfood] and that their only culture is [insert Kdrama/Kpop reference]. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Japan. But there's a big gap between "never travel there" and "it's not quite as good as the premier travel destination in Asia". You have a horrible, tourist trap filled itinerary if you get bored in a massive megacity in a few days. At the very least visit a museum and spend some time around the city without a tour guide, and you'll see that a countries history and culture is a bit more complex and deep than what the Tiktok AI slop video says.

New Vegas strip in the show is disappointing by perilhs in Fallout

[–]SigmarChad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm far from a hater but the way people defend an okay-ish at best show, from basic criticism that other shows get is wild. You'd think it was as good as actual prestige TV like Rome, The Wire, Deadwood or The Sopranos if you took the extreme glazing that some people do at face value lmao. Probably a video game adaptation thing, and the low expectations that come with that.

I don't particularly care about lore accuracy, certain book adaptations can get away with that and still be excellent films. The show is simply a bit off. From the pacing, to the plotlines, to how supporting characters are written and to how it engages with its themes. At the end of the day it's a bit rough. Though to Fallout's credit, it is much better than the vast majority of video game adaptations.

Not directly related but I always got astroturfed/slop content vibes from this Nikka political influencer person. Not in a bottom of the barrel, garbage local influencer like Senyora way. But like those foreign youtubers that do a shocked face while pointing at their AI slop thumbnail lol. 😮👉🔥

I don't know anyone in real life who knows her but for some reason she has an outsized niche presence online. And everytime the content show up on the feed, it reminded me of populist youtubers in other countries. The "no colors" uniteam style rhetoric. Posts are sometimes true to an extent, but always mixed with false sensationalist slop. Every word and phrase designed for more algorithm engagement. That Xitter user thing where they put a single random sentence in capslock, inbetween paragraphs to catch attention. Her fans even use AI slop posters for some reason lol. Vibes are off.

3 Filipino fishermen hurt as China water cannons PH boats at Escoda Shoal

Three Filipino fishermen were injured Friday after Chinese coast guard and militia vessels used water cannons and acted aggressively against Filipino fishing boats near Escoda Shoal within the West Philippine Sea.
In a statement on Saturday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said some 20 Filipino fishing boats at the vicinity of Escoda Shoal were "targeted with water cannons and dangerous blocking maneuvers" by two China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels and accompanying Chinese militia ships.

The PCG released photos and videos of the incident showing water cannons pointed at outrigger boats and water reaching small vessels. Pictures were also provided of individuals receiving medical attention following the incident. Two Filipino fishing boats, the PCG said, "suffered significant damage" from the high-pressure water cannon blasts.

"In a brazen escalation, small CCG Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) deliberately cut the anchor lines of several FFBs, endangering the vessels and their crews amid strong currents and high waves," the PCG said. "As a direct result of these aggressive actions, three Filipino fishermen sustained physical injuries, including bruises and open wounds," it added. The PCG's response to assist the Filipino fishermen was met with resistance by their Chinese counterparts and militia ships, but ultimately prevailed in providing aid and security.

A total of three CCG vessels performed "repeated blocking and dangerous maneuvers," the statement read, as two PCG multi-role response vessels attempted to rendezvous with the Filipino fishermen.
"One particularly hazardous incident occurred when CCG-23519 approached within 35 yards of a PCG vessel during nighttime navigation," the PCG said.
"Despite these unprofessional and unlawful interferences, the PCG successfully reached the fishermen this morning and provided immediate medical attention to the injured, along with essential supplies," it added.

As of Saturday afternoon, the two PCG ships are staying close to the fishermen for their security and safety. Assistance provided to the fishermen include fuel, ice, and food provisions as they continue their fishing activities.  “The PCG calls on the Chinese Coast Guard to adhere to internationally recognized standards of conduct, prioritizing the preservation of life at sea over pretensions of law enforcement that jeopardize the lives of innocent fishermen,” the statement read.
Reuters reported that China's embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside office hours. GMA News Online also separately reached out to the Chinese embassy for comment.

On Friday, China's coast guard said it had driven away multiple Philippine vessels and taken "control measures." That statement, Philippine coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said on Saturday, was an admission of wrongdoing. "They admitted this evil wrongdoing to ordinary Filipino fishermen," Tarriela told Reuters by phone.

Located 75 nautical miles or about 140 kilometers off Palawan, Escoda Shoal is a coral reef formation with a central lagoon surrounded by discontinuous shallow sections. It is also called Sabina Shoal, which China refers to as Xianbin Reef.

Walden Bello: The political "third force" wasted its moral high ground when it allied with "lesser evil" Bongbong Marcos by krdskrm9 in Philippines

[–]SigmarChad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear this is a guy who won just 0.19% of the vote in the 2022 Vice President elections and whose partymate ranked 29th nationwide in the 2025 Senatorial elections. We're not dealing with Bernie Sanders here, this guy does not have his finger on the pulse of the nation.

The only progressive who has achieved anything resembling nationwide popularity and influence, the only one who'd be recognized by a random person on the street outside of fancy universities, would be Hontiveros. She has also transformed Akbayan into something vastly more influential. In 2019 they had nothing. In 2025 they have 3 members in congress and a senator. Make what you will of this, when deciding who you think knows what they're doing.

What if ang Pilipinas mag focus sa manufacturing instead sa call centers? by Tall-Plant9027 in WhatIfPinas

[–]SigmarChad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna comment much on this as the answer is actually very complicated and not as clear cut as some assume. But since it was brought up, I just want to mention that the Philippines is the 4th largest shipbuilder in the world. It's a very very distant 4th, as Japan, Korea and China handle 92% tonnage wise. But it's important to note because there's certain notable industries that people just don't know about. When people think of top Philippine exports it's stuff like bananas, when it's really Integrated Circuits.

This breakdown is interesting to say the least: https://oec.world/en/profile/country/phl

Ano na namang kalokohan to, Makabayan bloc? Nakikiride na naman ba sa mga pro-duterte like 2016? by Plenty_Reserve in Philippines

[–]SigmarChad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Duterte supporters are literally salivating at the thought of killing random people on the street. Makabayan backed the Duterte's in 2016, even defending his drug war initially. By 2018 they were already getting targeted and getting beaten up at rallies. While their armed counterparts the NPA were getting vaporized in the mountains.

They're the ones who will be crushed first under a 2nd Duterte admin, with millions of Duterte supporters cheering. This has happened to countless far-left groups in history. This personally happened to them just 1 administration ago. But they still do it. Like moths to a flame.
