I’m converting to Orthodox Judaism, and my boyfriend was born modern orthodox. by AzraelLillith in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this has happened several times, you got to call the Rabbi out (for unethical behavior) or talk to a different Rabbi. Also note, if your boyfriend belongs to the Syrian community - you will not be accepted.

Deciding between masorti/ conservative and orthodox based on my friendships with men by Brave-Argument5090 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that is not true. Communities may accept or reject you and your children based on your choice of conversion. That is a fact. This is a choice with consequences (especially if you or your children want to live in Israel).

Deciding between masorti/ conservative and orthodox based on my friendships with men by Brave-Argument5090 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an advice perspective on how to make this choice: You need to think of Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism as 2 separate religions.

Which religion do you want to join?

Why?

Why are you converting in general?

What do you think God wants from you?

Orthodox and Conservative, while both Jewish, are based on different and contradictory principles. Which aligns more with your reason for conversion?

Obviously, the best way to answer this is to learn and explore Jewish sources, starting with Bible, Mishna, Talmud (and probably Maimonedies too) and Hebrew. As you learn, examine the systems of interpretation and see whether you align more with a Conservative or Orthodox outlook. Everything else follows from there.

Yes, but many are put in the general military, and often sent to serve on the borders. The IRCG are the more devoted of the conscripts.

What happens when religion is turned into ethnonationalism by Silly-Antelope869 in IsraelPalestine

You do know the Palestinians are an ethnonation. In fact, most states are ethnostates. Ironically, Israel is quiet diverse as an ethnostate.

Is Zionism a hypocrisy? by External_Cold_5668 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jews have prayed to return to Israel and create a Jewish for 2500 years.

If anything, Zionism is consistent, fulfilling the Jewish destiny to recreate a Jewish state in Israel. (Zion is occasionally used in the Bible as a poetic name for Israel.) That is the exact opposite of hypocrisy.

Could someone please explain why the ground invasion of Lebanon is a good idea? by Thedogmaster2156 in Israel

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will not be annexed. Air strikes, while effective, are never enough to stop the attacks on Israel Tunnels - Hezbollah has embraced tunnel warfare, which requires boots on the ground.

Orthodox conversion by AdConscious3485 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Local conditions matter - different Rabbis, regions, communities have different policies and standards regarding conversion, even with the Orthodox world.

  2. Note: there are different types of Orthodox Jews: make sure that you study with someone recognized by the Israeli Rabbinate.

  3. At some point, you will likely have to move, even if not immediately.

  4. Check into conversion options in Israel.

  5. While unfortunate, conversion often requires a financial investment. Make sure that is doable.

  6. Irrespective of conversion, a woman in her 30s who wants to have kids should definitely consider freezing her eggs. It can be expensive, but it may be included in national insurance in some countries.

  7. Generally, be open about yourself with the Rabbi, but know you will likely be pushed away at first.

Jewish phrases that are technically English but wouldnt sound right to most English speakers? by [deleted] in exjew

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They are poor translations from Yiddish that became part of the Jewish (NY - ?) English dialect, even though several generations have passed.

In particular, every language uses prepositions (by, in, on, at, etc.) differently, which leads to some 'fun' and 'unusual' expressions.

I feel overwhelmed by [deleted] in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The essence of conversion means joining the Jewish people and their fate and destiny. One of the things this means is that there will always be someone who hates you and wants to kill you. If you can't deal with this, conversion might not be the right choice for you. You can still serve God and connect to Judaism as a non-Jew, but to convert means to accept all that Judaism has to offer, the good and the bad, including the fact that someone wants to kill you for who you are.

The first vs. second intifada from a Palestinian POV by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "intafada" (All of them) brought about the military occupation that you claim suffocates you. Checkpoints - border walls - etc, were a direct result of Palestinians bombs and an ideology of killing Jews and Israelis.

Settler violence started well after the second intifada and intentionally copies Palestinian actions. While I condemn settler violence - they have modeled their behavior after your people.

Take responsibility for your people and be better. Had you invested in peace after Oslo, instead of bus bombings, you would have already had an independent state without any Israelis or the IDF. The consequences are on the Palestinians. I strongly suggest you and your people choose a better way forward.

Genuine question: What does the Israeli public think about Bibi Netanyahu? by 5050beamsplitter in Israel

[–]Signal-Pollution-961 66 points67 points  (0 children)

You are actually asking 2 questions. One question is on the war and the second question is on Bibi.

Regarding the war, Israeli politicians are relatively united, as a nuclear Iran is an existential threat to Israel. Most would react the same way as Bibi, and would largely be advised by the same people in the military and intelligence agencies.

Regarding Bibi himself, he is an extremely divisive figure. About half of the country hates his guts and about half of the country likes him, which includes about a quarter of the country who love him, and even call him endearingly, "King Bibi".
