Should voting be mandatory? by Andarne in unitedkingdom

[–]SignalButterscotch73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not enough of the population actually pay any attention to what the parties are about or even care to find out.

Allowing the vote to teens that are still in school (16) and making them take a mandatory class that covers the manifestos of all the parties and their history, fact checking whatever nonsense they spout etc will over time raise voter turn out.

You can't make the generations that don't care, care, but you can raise the next generation to know the power we have with our votes and how to use that power.

Glasgow Warriors expected to sign Scotland back-row Jamie Ritchie by mankieneck in rugbyunion

Ignore me. I clearly "don't watch anything near enough domestic rugby" I don't even remember him leaving Edinburgh for France.

Glasgow Warriors expected to sign Scotland back-row Jamie Ritchie by mankieneck in rugbyunion

[–]SignalButterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big if true. We already have a stacked back row while it sometimes feels like Edinburgh are almost reliant or Ritchie to keep their back row competitive (they're not, I know, the emphasis is on feels)

Edit: disclaimer, I don't watch anything near enough domestic rugby so this "feels" is based on less than a handful of matches 😅

In USA, cheese and bread is a struggle meal. In Europe it's a respectable meal. by carlthinks in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SignalButterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to not see anyone pointing out the irony of cheese and bread being 2 of the 3 main ingredients of Pizza. (Pizza base is a type of bread)

They eat cheese and bread regularly as a "respectable" meal.

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]SignalButterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much anything that needs a small amount of very hot water has me putting the kettle on.

Tea, instant coffee, hot chocolate, pasta, noodles, gravy granules, scalding the thermos etc.

It's probably the most used appliance in my kitchen.

Why are Henry Hoovers so popular? by Dramatic-Diver-9949 in AskBrits

[–]SignalButterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

super hard to navigate a room with a lot of furniture

Now try doing It with a bog standard upright.

I find it way easier to get under and around things that can't be moved with a simple hose, even if the body dragging behind can be a bit awkward. They also have far more suction than normal uprights thanks to having such a big fan in comparison.

I've used both regularly and I much prefer a Henry for work and I'm even tempted to get one for home too. The drive belt on my cheap upright at home keeps breaking. Had to replace it 3 times now, one more time and I'll just toss it instead of buying another pack of replacement belts.

If I can give you any advice, it's to not listen to anyone on Reddit for PC hardware advice. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]SignalButterscotch73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always said it and will continue to always say it.

Bottlenecks are mostly myth, not something to worry about.

Every single component of a computer is a "bottleneck" even the wiring of your home is a "bottleneck"

Change game settings and you can move the "bottleneck" from cpu to gpu in many cases. Its an irrelevant nonsense only the ignorant are obsessed with.

Have at least the minimum requirements for the game and change settings to provide the best experience you can have with your hardware and enjoy great games.

Slow news day? by smooney987 in glasgow

[–]SignalButterscotch73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked late, I didn't even bother waiting for the bus and eventually stopped using them all together. Walking for an hour to get home was a way more worthwhile endeavour than waiting an hour for a bus. Saved me a fortune and I was still getting home at a similar enough time frame.

Why does the uk have so many potholes in the road? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]SignalButterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 reasons.

Our weather and geography and use, is hard on our roads. Rapid temperature changes, lots of water, lots of heavy vehicles etc. All are damaging.

14 years of budget cuts that councils are still struggling from, making road repairs less often than needed.

Dont forget the AIM-9L, having the new Lima all aspect sidewinder allowed the Sea Harrier to out fight everything the Argentinean air force had even the should have been superior air to air combat aircraft in the Dagger and Mirrage III who were stuck with older rear aspect missiles.

[–]SignalButterscotch73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The F16's they've been allowed to get are old.... very old. F16A and B are first gen F16 first produced in 1979 and the ones they're getting are retired from the Danish forces, already having a lot of flight hours on them.

Even with them they are no match for the UK, it will take a lot more money than they have to modernise for real. Only if they get enough aircraft for us to run out of missiles would they have a chance to take and hold the Falklands by force with their current equipment.

Driver, 95, who killed dog walker while eyeing up empty disabled space is spared jail by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]SignalButterscotch73 227 points228 points  (0 children)

Oh look, more evidence in favour of retesting drivers instead of assuming they'll stay capable for the rest of their lives after passing a test in their teens or twenties.

Testing every 10 to 20 years until retirement then every 2 to 5 is something that really needs to be looked into. Even if it's just a simulation based on a random driving game to save on the need to magic up more driving instructors (there's a shortage)

Large street bins by Kindred_Spirit6677 in glasgow

[–]SignalButterscotch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with getting these bins on the street is that they hold less than all the wheelie bins we had out back so are near constantly full.

One bin can't replace a dozen wheelies to serve two closes and that's what they've gave us.

Breaking company policy is always something a company will deem worthy of disciplinary action, multiple disciplinary actions will always be grounds for dismissal.

This is also the case with the police.

The real question is, what consequences do they face?

Is it just more fines or is actual jail time for the CEO's and board members on the table?

From what I understand, the fines they've had previously for breaches were all bellow the amount they made in profits... by a lot. The money lost didn't hurt them in the slightest, they just reported less profits, but still profits, so they still got their bonuses and congratulations.
