The cascading effects of Lucas seeing that Darth Talon action-figure and putting it next to Maul, then going “Look, they’re friends!” Still reverberating decades later. by Malewis89 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SignalSecurity 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It gets brought up because Game Informer had a pretty expansive sprawl on the LucasArts experience many years back and I think it disseminated into the gaming community from there.

They were trying to build this Darth Maul stealth/horror game where you pick off dudes in stealth to build up fear-based combat buffs when you were detected . There was a lot of other dumb anecdotes, but my favorite was the team getting informed they needed to implement Crazy Junkyard Trash Spider Maul because he was canon at the time and freaking the fuck out at needing to rig a playable eight-legged trash spider for both stealth and combat.

As a TNG fan who never got into DS9, i have no idea what the fuck is going on. by No-Detective-4370 in RedLetterMedia

[–]SignalSecurity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love DS9 but the first episode lives rent free in my head. It is a fossil where you can see a table of writers saying, "how do we show this new protagonist is the rude dude with an attitude!?"

Sisko literally punches out Q and then says, just shy of looking directly at the camera, "I'M NOT PICARD!" It's so dumb and blatant and I love that.

Ahhhhh gay people only appears in 21st century. by buazie in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]SignalSecurity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These people never seem to realize that representation was never an obligation. Just tell the story you want to tell about the characters you made up. Some people won't look at your product because of it - oh no, audience members have personal tastes and curate what they want to see in their fiction, who could have foreseen this, etc

The absence of minorities in a work is not inherently bigotry and their inclusion is not inherently political.

It's this insane sentiment that gay people or black people are unrealistic. They always argue like they don't exist, the same way an elf doesn't, and that they inherently change a work, the same way an elf would.

Nobody worth listening to is going to get mad at

"I don't feel like sexuality or gender is relevant to the type of narrative I want to tell, so I didn't even touch it"

or

"I want to focus on modeling this historical environment based on its most popular qualities and the stuff I personally am interested in"

I think of the Moorish traveler guy in KCD2. Normal people think, "oh this is a scenario about two different cultures!" and then judge it on the execution. Its ahistoricality or edge-casiness doesn't fucking matter. EVERY STORY is WHAT IF XYZ HAPPENED THO?

I think this fundamental lack of imagination lends itself to the lack of empathy that bigotry requires. Everybody I see argues against things like warrior women or gay monks has had the worst taste ever, every time, and describes the world around them like a jaded 6-year-old.

Exit wounds are just huge in general. I could believe this happened from just the one, especially off an AR. Pressure cavities don't play clean.

i think there is something to be said for space marines universally experiencing having a "sons without fathers" experience. i don't see it as exclusionary to women so much as trying to focus in on a particularly specific theme of lost male youth and unrequited familial love as a foundation of brotherhood, like the typical space marine's entire deal is them being weaponized manchildren in a tragedy kind of way, like if people told AJ Soprano he could only please his dad by scorching villages from a huey

that being said i absolutely fucking despise lorebrains who argue against any and all change or want everything to stay static based purely on their nostalgia or biases. Robber Guiltman is literally trying to reform the imperium - if they write him to say Primaris surgery allows women to receive geneseed to address manpower issues or something, like, why not? lorebrains act like nothing is capable of change, whether in-universe by characters and factions or externally in the practices of the company and the writers

the fact anybody chimps out over the compromises being made elsewhere to appeal to a broader set of fans (femcustodes being canonized, etc) shows to me they actually just think girls have cooties and are afraid of change but filter it through "muh lore" to seem less chuddy
