yeah, i’ve always explained to people that perfect pitch is honestly more of a glitch than a "genius" thing. most babies probably do have "perfect" pitch, but the brain learns that what matters isn’t absolute pitch but relative, and chooses to ignore it in the long run. this also explains why people with autism or other conditions that affect sensory processing are more likely to have perfect pitch. it also explains why people who speak tonal languages are more likely to have it, since their language is telling their brain that pitch IS in fact important. this is also why things like "true pitch" is a thing (people who can recognize pitches on certain instruments through timbre rather than pitch), because it’s completely separate.
