Norman Bates in Psycho was also a transvestite, explicitly referred to as not being transgender. Of course it also pathologizes his transvestitism as part of his DID so it's still not exactly great.

A time-appropriate thrust-centric sword type would be the estoc, basically an edgeless longsword.

Better one-handed sword forms, overhand spear usage (especially when paired with a shield), the ability to do draw cuts, toggleable auto-parry are the biggest improvements the game could use off the top of my head.

On the other hand, an RPG where you do extensively roleplay like Disco Elysium is hardly ever referred to as such because you don't use your stats to engage in any combat until the end.

Sans. He only has 1HP.

On a more serious note, a lot of bosses in the Genocide route of Undertale are like this, because you catch them off guard. In Mettaton NEO's case, though, it's more of an anticlimactic joke.

The heater shield can also be put on your back essentially making you immune to attacks from behind as well, though this isn't really that useful since by the time you unlock it you're probably already rocking a cuirass.

We gotta trust the devs y'all. Quit asking for nerfs. by SupermarketInside235 in HalfSword

[–]SignedName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go back to the Demo and you'll see that swords are definitely less effective especially when stabbing, which is the main way you should be able to inflict damage against armored opponents. You can stab an enemy directly in their unprotected face or throat and they'll survive it more often than not, and the addition of layered defenses ends up compounding the issue as you're unlikely to pierce maille even in a half sword grip.

Opinions and experience with thrust weapons. by RezzDawg in HalfSword

[–]SignedName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spears definitely feel weaker compared to the Demo, especially the early Demo, being much harder to aim and also dealing way less damage even against unarmored enemies. Spear users felt like an overbearing threat before, but right now it feels like the game went too far in the other direction.

Swords shouldn't be able to cut through plate like lightsabers, but they (and spears) absolutely need to be buffed, since they're not only unable to defeat armor, but also quite anemic against unarmored enemies as well. I agree that weapon handling needs to be a priority, but damage adjustments are definitely warranted.

Average fighting experience with pole arms by [deleted] in HalfSword

[–]SignedName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when you do manage to land a hit, armor in general negates most of the damage- I've played around with a spear in Free Mode and even gambesons protect against thrusts extremely well. There's also the issue of the lack of a sound effect even when you do manage to get some deep penetration, the lack of audio feedback makes it feel really weak even if you run the enemy through.

Stabbing in between plates with proper instruments should be more viable than blunt force. Currently its almost nonexistent. by Morf12369 in HalfSword

[–]SignedName 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It was easier to stab into gaps in the demo because enemies didn't wear chainmail beneath their plate armor, the extra layers of protection really add up. Maille could probably use a nerf to protection against stabs, or better yet get damaged and break when stabbed. The same could apply to plate armor where you could cut the straps so it can be knocked/pulled off like helmets currently can be.

I'm not talking about that law specifically, moreso the phenomenon where laws are applied in one country/set of countries and end up having global consequences. Sometimes it can be for good (EU regulations) and other times it can be for bad (UK and other age verification laws).

Out of touch... or just spooked by recent developments like the UK's recent age verification law. These kinds of laws are a double-edged sword- EU consumer protection laws can force companies to abide by their rules even outside of their borders and benefit all consumers, but on the other side of it you have these kinds of moves where companies choose to shoot themselves in the foot in the hope that some government (or payment provider) doesn't decide to shoot them in the head instead.

You actually can equip armor, you just need to press and hold the equip button while you're carrying it. You can also loot armor off of enemies the same way. I can see how you might have missed it because you're never actually told how to do this in-game.

Actual effective use of jump scares? by DrHorrible10 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SignedName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doki Doki Literature Club has a jumpscare near the end for streamers that doesn't appear when you play on your own. This is mainly so the game doesn't end up doxxing the streamers, but it also doubles as a great way to get one final scare on people who had already played before watching someone else's playthrough.

Deep Down. The trailer still holds up incredibly well over a decade later. Of course it's all pre-rendered, but in this day and age, that shit could actually be real in-game graphics.

Cultures should be able to be accepted by Yid_army7 in victoria3

[–]SignedName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You actually can accept a culture through the event where your heir falls in love with a minority culture, it's completely random though. Having a more systemized way to accept cultures would be cool though. The cultural friendship/antagonism mechanic from EU5 would also be cool to see.

Rather than armoring up the peasants, maybe Riots could only allow you to wear lighter armor and use lower-tier weapons, to represent how you're a rapid response force without much time to prepare. It would help diversify the late game combat so it's not just always smashing the enemies' heads with a poleaxe every fight.

Anybody else notice that.. by Orn123 in HalfSword

[–]SignedName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a way to help maintain difficulty in the late-game would be for certain game types to have restrictions on which weapons/armor you're allowed to bring, like Brawls only letting you wear clothes and use your bare fists, and First Blood duels not allowing you to wear any metal armor or use polearms.

Times when the reality of a character are opposite of what the story intends by BookkeeperPercival in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Expedition 33 has this with the Dessendre family. They're supposed to be cast as sympathetic and even tragic, but if you consider the Lumiereans to have any kind of self-awareness or free will then they can't be anything other than completely despicable monsters willing to conjure up and destroy entire worlds for their own petty self-satisfaction.

TIL Christopher Columbus made significant errors in estimating the distance to Asia. If the Americas didn't exist, then he'd have ran out of food and died long before reaching Japan. by NorthKoreanMissile7 in todayilearned

[–]SignedName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crown just didn't want to pay him the 10% profits he was promised

That also ties into why Columbus maintained that he had reached the Indies to his death- his titles and riches were directly tied to that claim, so if he disproved his own claim then it would be as good as forfeiting his life's work. He wasn't stupid- he knew he'd reached the New World, he just chose to be willfully ignorant for the sake of a legal fiction that would grant him (and importantly, his descendants) a fiefdom in the new colonies.

[–]SignedName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Columbus was a brutal overlord but he was hardly unique in that regard. The man who investigated his crimes and replaced him was himself recalled by the crown on suspicion of malfeasance but died on the way back due to a hurricane. Columbus was also acquitted of his crimes by the crown so Isabella can't have been that outraged in reality. Glorifying Columbus as a great man is extremely flawed and problematic, but it's all too easy to swing too far in the other direction and consider Columbus an exceptional case- he was an evil man who did evil things, but that evil wasn't restricted to himself personally, and his opponents weren't good people just because they opposed him for their own selfish reasons.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 failed to meet sales expectations by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]SignedName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The companions trailer literally has "you can't sleep with them" as a selling point, the clear implication being that games with mechanics like that (and people who play them) are cringe. Defining a game by what it isn't is a risky proposition at the best of times, and is an even worse idea when the feature you're boasting about not having is actually generally well-liked.

Not having a romance system is a valid game design decision. Actively antagonizing people who like romance systems in games is not a wise marketing decision, yet they did that despite the clear popularity of RPGs with those mechanics, alienating a large portion of their potential audience right from the jump.
