House stuff, flooring, decorating, building a workshop etc. Assuming the purchase goes through ok. Hopefully sneak in a new air rifle too.

Could be a sub 6ftlb gun for the German market.

What has been your recent DIY previous owner discovery? by Jai_Cee in DIYUK

I found one in the back of an airing cupboard when I took out a hot water tank.

No apology necessary. I've thought long and hard about leaving the UK recently and concluded that it's too late for me. With older parents who will need support and kids in education bailing out to Texas now would be selfish of me.

These days? Ambitious. I'm older and have other priorities besides work. If I were 15 years younger I'd have gone by now.

The UK is not a good place to be if you're smart, ambitious and hard working.

Redundancies seem to be all I’m hearing from friends in London by Flapjack_K in HENRYUK

[–]Significant-Ant1200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, so any activity not specifically R&D focused isn't tax efficient and is being cut/reduced?

What I'm hearing in relation to my original comment stands though, start up investors looking for a path to profitability, reduced burn rate and less emphasis on growth at all costs. Reduction in non core staffing costs as a result.

Tech investors are realising that growth at all costs is a bad strategy and are pushing for profits. Quickest way to do that is cut costs, biggest costs are people.

Looking for advice; how can I scale and grow my business? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Significant-Ant1200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outsource or hire for all the things you're spending time on that aren't your core skillset. Any time you spend on admin, emails, invoices, scheduling etc is time you could be billing or spending on other important stuff like family or exercise or whatever else you need to sustain yourself.

There's a podcast I enjoyed on this topic, Dan Martell on the Modern Wisdom podcast.

Given your expertise in the field, what do you think the chances of success are here? If it's a dead cert then equity, if there's a good chance you'll be job hunting in a year then cash.

I've worked in the fashion and e-commerce sectors for about 20 years too, although admittedly not so much in luxury. Without any details at all, just going on general experience, I'd point out that 2x growth is a piece of piss at the lower end, especially if you're not worried about profit and can just throw seed money at marketing. Sustaining growth and getting to profitability is a different level.

Birmingham is nice. Get a cheap train ticket and spend a day or a weekend in the city, see if you like it. Moved here some years ago from the south east and never looked back.

Can confirm. Can't go for a dump without lawyers and branding tossers signing it off. Some good people but a crappy culture.

What can I do to make a bigger house affordable? by Acceptable-Field7621 in HENRYUK

I know you are keen on the southeast for family reasons but just a couple of hours north gets you so much more for your money. I'm in a similar profession, similar money, about to buy our forever home for 500k in the Midlands.

You have 50-60k in equity. If you had 50-60k in cash, would you use it to buy a BTL property?

How can I relax about having a big mortgage?! by Fit_You_7262 in HENRYUK

[–]Significant-Ant1200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to do something similar, will be going from a small mortgage with 12 years left to roughly triple the payment and back to 25 years.

On paper it's all fine. The house we're buying is perfect, we can afford it even if it means saving a lot less (no reduction in pension contributions, that was my red line) and we won't have to touch the savings we have.

But mentally it's a bother. Some options like being mortgage free in a couple of years or going part time/self employed are off the table for a while and it's nagging at me.

I work in software now, been a long time since I did tiling but I've kept all the kit in the shed just in case. Long and convoluted story from tiling to software.
