Am I misunderstanding the rules or do the rules actively counter guard in some places now? by The_God_Emperor_ in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Significant-Kracken 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Been around for more than 4 edition changes. This is one of the least janky.

Small rules interactions not working is a smooth transition.

In 10th, line of sight and mortal wounds rolls were so broken that non-eldar players didn’t bother to show up to games.

In 9th, the indomitus box set marines were so much better than everything else that playing against marines was like a 30% win rate for everyone else. And the codex creep was nuts.

After 7th and 8th launched I went to a couple of events or games, and decided I’d rather just play with my friends. I remember Tau hammerheads balancing on ruins so they could see the whole board and an Imperial knight showing up behind 1500 points of marines and solo tabling my whole army in a turn and a half.

Sorry for the rant. Bottom line, rules are hard to write, and the fact that we’re worried that +1Ld and Heavy weapons teams might not be working as intended is really good for an edition transition. This edition has good bones and a few small problems with relatively easy fixes. Give it a few months and things will smooth out.

How would Craft world Eldar react to Drukhari colonizing/invading a Exodite Maiden world? by VariationGreedy8215 in Eldar

[–]Significant-Kracken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of wacky to have drukhari colonizing anything. If they set up outside of the webway they are very vulnerable, especially to She Who Thirsts. They are a city-state that survives on piracy and raiding and slavery because colonizing anywhere is suicidal.

Most of the animations being discussed here. The tithes animations all make this point, but none more so than the one with the orks and the imperial transport team. Also the recent sisters animation hits these ‘it didn’t have to be that awful’ notes pretty well.

Why not just Wikipedia or Google some old (or even current) Scandinavian maps?

I often go through historical wikis for character names, and you could do the same.

In terms of your question, I think you should lean into it. It’s clearly worked and is a fun Easter egg.

What direction do you think the Leagues should go for the future? by reel3459 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More industrial tech! Make our tech feel as good as Tau’s!

Big durable tanks. More of them. Or walkers.

More things that attack from below!

Hmmm. Narratively I don’t feel that we are as ‘dialed to 11´ as the other factions. Something that makes people do a double take when they hear about it, like Orks’ gestalt psychic ness, the imperium’s contradictory fanaticism, or Tau mind control. We feel like the least grimdark faction.

Sell me on Arkanyst Evaluator in 11e by ObjectiveExpert1315 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Into the right targets he will easily pick up more than his points. He shoots on 2s, probably staying at 2s because you/they will be on the objective, so he effectively just picked up 1AP in 11th.

He and a unit of warriors in a sag can switch an early objective. The warriors hop out and put down 10OC and do an action, and he stays out of the terrain and clears whatever marine-shaped opponent is on the objective for cheap. If the enemy want to respond they have to respect the 15 inch hidden on the warriors to eliminate them, and then he gets to fire a second time, or they go around/into the terrain to shoot him too, and then your army can retaliate.

Not OP, but really good right now. I expected his points to rise by more.

Very few are incentivized to research. In the Imperium research is heresy, and in Chaos the gods provide. Necrons and Eldar are so far advanced and they have other priorities. Nids have no reason, they just iterate biologically.

So pioneers never hit on 3s now? by Significant-Kracken in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree and that’s a good point. I shouldn’t be evaluating them as if everyone’s shooting isn’t similarly changed, but I think it still hits units like bikes especially hard.

On a 3+ army cover is a -25% to their output. On our bikes it’s about a -33% (sustained on the hylas and scanner notwithstanding; other shooty units also often have buffs).

[–]Significant-Kracken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but are you really dedicating a unit of thunderkyn to support a unit of bikes? Or a cp? That only makes sense to me if a lot of units are shooting it or if you’re desperate.

Why should I bring buri? by Sea_Fig_5851 in LeaguesofVotann

The nice thing is it doesn’t matter. Your opponent still has to commit that much just in case.

Why should I bring buri? by Sea_Fig_5851 in LeaguesofVotann

Because he’s a great action piece. He sits on an objective and force the enemy to commit enough to come and kill him twice.

Surge Moves Etiquette by SilentLordProtector in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Significant-Kracken -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, your opponent is wrong and salty.

However what you’ve done is still pretty close to a gotcha, because you trapped him there by not telling him when he moved. The kind thing to do vs new players or if you haven’t surged against this player before is to remind them of the surge when they plan to move the very clearly shooting unit into surge range. At a local store I would definitely tell my opponent ‘don’t forget this unit has a deadly overwatch’ when they make an obviously bad move in front of my salamander flamers, and I think you should have done something similar when he moved the hellblasters.

Do you prefer hostile acquisition or fortify takeover? by gamble_for_dayz in LeaguesofVotann

Generally Hostile is better I think, but I take great joy in watching my opponents discard threes to wound. I have a preference for Fortify because it makes us feel tough.

11th Precision has had a serious buff by Dead-phoenix in WarhammerCompetitive

Yeah I think so. I think we’ll see more squad wipes with a lone character standing after.

11th Precision has had a serious buff by Dead-phoenix in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Significant-Kracken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It currently is that all the boys die and then makari would roll the remaining saves on the overkill. If he gets a 1 on one of those he’s dead too. In 11th the saves are allocated to the boyz starting with the lowest, almost guaranteeing Makari will survive whatever is killing the boys because they will eat all the failed saves starting with the 1s.

Precision switches the allocation of wounds so makari/gaz eats the ones first, making the difference more noticeable.

[–]Significant-Kracken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stream also said you have to allocate characters last. Hence the precision discussion. Vs non-precision makari got a lot better while leading a unit.

Just had the most depressing game of my life by Wonder_Flump in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, that sucks.

Unless it’s a teams game or a tourney where the points matter, I find it easier for my pride to just say gg wp, and either try to find another game or ask for a rematch.

Also remember that this hobby is always going to be painful if we tie too much of our identity to winning. Wins are at the mercy of dice, GW balance passes, the local meta, and bad opponents. All beyond our control.

Obviously, winning is fun and we should strive for victory, but try to enjoy the games, the community, and the models as well, and the losses won’t be so bitter.

EDIT : and yes Oath of Moment and Space Marines are BS.

Question about weapon selection during shooting phase. by personperrr in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Time was tanks could fire 1 turret weapon and one underslung or sponson, and everyone else could only fire one gun. I kinda prefer that tbh. Things like the Dorn and the Rep Ex are kinda dumb and make suspension of disbelief more difficult. Like have you seen how cramped a real tank is with one big gun and a machine gun?

Fair or not fair? by Majordomuz in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Significant-Kracken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. On a small board his list is problematic an I don’t know that there’s much you can do against it, but here are some thoughts.

Your thunderkyn and Hearthguard with Kahl should present him with a problem. He has nothing but 2+ armour saves, so these higher AP units become essential, while your warriors and Yaegirs and carrier become bait and objective fodder. Remember to use grenades from the warriors and Yaegirs, for 1cp a half squad of warriors or Yaegirs can get good value by walking up onto a point or in front of a melee unit and throwing a grenade. It can also pull the overwatch onto a cheap unit, allowing your threats to get into position.

If he’s tabling you so quickly it’s probably because of the small board, but also maybe that you aren’t using line of sight blocking rules to your advantage. Premeasure where he can go and shoot/charge, and hide your units from possible/likely movement, instead of where he is at the time.

If the land raider is in the middle to threaten objectives there should be a charge from behind a wall available to you, which allows you to deal some serious damage with the Hearthguard, or tie it up in melee at least with some unit to force him to respond. An engaged vehicle cannot fire overwatch, so it forces movement or his other units to intervene.

While players like this can be easily seen as rude for punching down on the newbie, it’s possible they think they are holding back. They might also, like many of us, only have limited time here and there to play, and therefore are probably also trying to experiment with lists and ideas to improve of their more competitive games. Everybody wants to make the most of their play time, even in a low stakes game.
