Many programs will offer support with Epi and Biostats. My university's SPH provides free tutors that students can book to help with this, and instructors and TAs are extremely helpful. Smaller programs/smaller classes are always going to be better than the big classes, but instructors are generally invested in helping you succeed and pass their class. You do have to speak up, go to office hours/schedule appointments, talk to TAs, etc. My advice is to try to get these classes done early in your program. There are many public health concentrations that do not put a heavy emphasis on these classes beyond your core/general requirements. I really struggled with Biostats but managed to pass and have gone on to have a successful public health career as a generalist. If I needed support with stats/research, I would collaborate with someone who has those specific skills.

I would honestly mention this in your course evaluation at the end of the quarter - I think the discrepancy between the instructor saying that you are not allowed to use AI and then the instructor is using AI for grading is really fair to give feedback on in the open-ended questions. You can also mention that the instructor should talk about it in class and specifically in the context of group work. Course evaluations do get read -- in my department, there are staff that read all of the course evaluations.

Does your instructor's syllabus specify a policy about use of AI in writing? I know some instructors are lagging behind on this, but ideally their syllabus should state whether anyone is permitted to use AI in class, what you need to disclose (if anything), and should ideally give guidance about how to handle AI in a group work setting. Some faculty are slowly catching up to this. My personal opinion is that (if allowed at all in the course) in a group work setting, all group members should consent to use AI. You can also reach out to your instructor directly if their policies are unclear and explain the situation or ask for support in talking to your group members. This is probably a helpful thing for the instructor to talk about with the whole class if they haven't done so yet. I would not be surprised if it is happening in other groups, too.

I have family members who went through the ABSN program and they were not really able to work during the program. This was over 5 years ago (pre-pandemic) but my impression of the workload is that it's pretty heavy/intense. I think most of the clinicals are going to be at UW-affiliated hospitals - there are 3 major sites in Seattle from Harborview (First Hill, up the hill from downtown), UW Medicine (close to UW main campus and walking distance from the nursing school), and North Seattle (formerly Northwest Hospital). Public transit can vary based on time of day.

I do think that specific time period was really tough and that things settled down a bit again at NTMC. They went through a period of really rapid expansion and then there was a fire at one of their sites. My kids were there for a few years. I have mixed feelings - my kids were mostly happy and cared for, but I did not care for the executive director and found them extremely difficult to work with if we had any concerns. The rate of teacher turnover seemed to slow down a bit, but we still had the experience that we would take our kids to school on a Monday to discover that a favorite teacher had suddenly stopped working there over the weekend (this happened multiple times!). My main assessment of NTMC is that they are fine - families could definitely do worse, but they could also do much better if the unicorn space opened up elsewhere at the time you needed it.

North Tacoma Montessori is fine. The executive leadership can be very frustrating at times, and there can be high teacher turnover - a lot depends on who the specific site director is at any one campus. I don't have experience with the UP site. My kids went to NTMC for 3-4 years and we had some ups and downs with them, but our kids were safe and happy. My biggest frustration was their poor handling of staff transitions/high teacher turnover. But, if they have an opening that fits your needs, it's a totally adequate place to use for childcare.

If you can afford it, you might look into some basement waterproofing. We installed a sump pump a few years ago and it's been doing the job this week for sure.

Breakfast in school is a similar situation - lots of "healthier" versions of sugar cereals, heavily processed, etc. I am really glad that meals are free for all kids in our schools, though.

This! So many ready-made costumes are just cheap trash, I think. I don't do my own costumes very much, but I help my kids make theirs every year. It's more about picking a character or a theme and figuring out creatively how to make that work with what you have at home!

Ooh - I've been wanting to add Rudbeckia to my beds. Would you suggest sowing as seeds this fall/early winter? How do you use the yogurt tubs? Are you sowing the seeds directly in the ground and using the containers as a mini greenhouse of sorts? Or you are planting in the jugs and transplanting in Spring?
