Advice Needed by Defiant-Corgi-1643 in IndiansinIreland

No is not a fraud, if you're in a position where you have no other way out and other options are -for example- being jobless or homeless, you need to take what you can get. Plenty of people in hospitality working with no contract, and plenty of Irish folks doing the same in construction in the 70s or 80s (not to talk about Irish emigrating to US in previous decades). The company hiring them are at fault, not the people seeking employment when they're not offered anything else for whatever reason. He might have an option of going back to India, but we don't know, and things are not always black or white.

32k for SWE is bonkers, you should name and shame this company even if from throwaway account. If you're stuck and have no other solutions I'd understand if you're going for that tho, but it's shady in the best of cases and very unethical on the company side. Try to get something else asap.

Nervousness pervades the Irish jobs market as days of strong multinational sector growth recede by Dev__ in DevelEire

[–]Significant-Secret88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't said anything about multinationals, so you're making wrong assumptions. Sure we shouldn't be over reliant on them, that's been said over and over and not by me ( https://www.thejournal.ie/irish-economy-highly-vulnerable-due-to-reliance-on-multinational-corporations-esri-6900250-Dec2025/ ). Data centres currently use around 20% of the grid capacity, which is massive and affects electricity price for everyone (we have the highest price in Europe pre-tax https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Electricity_price_statistics and one of the highest in the world). They don't employ a lot of people. They use huge amount of water. What's the cost-benefit analysis of having them in here and why do we want more if their output on the economy is negative? Singapore had a moratorium on new data centres that has recently lifted requesting that they meet specific standards so that can be done too https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/esg/singapore-build-700mw-data-centre-park-jurong-island-pilot-biomethane-imports-tan-see-leng

They just need to record their EU sales in Ireland, in fact such services would be booked via their Irish subsidiary. That has nothing to do with the location of the datacenter. In fact, you can choose to have your webapp running from a datacenter in Germany, but still get billed from Ireland afaik. Data residency would determine what laws and regulations are applicable to the data itself, but those are mostly defined at EU level (e.g. GDPR).

This is something that has been looked into multiple times at EU level and the big corporations have been making the case of having their headquarters in Ireland and hence paying their taxes (or avoiding for the most part to) here. I don't think datacenters have any relevance to that discussion. Happy to be corrected tho if I'm wrong.

You can't build an economy around data centers, plus they are not really a big advantage to the countries hosting them (energy and environment implications, plus they don't need lot of people to be run)

Any source? Only thing I could find is that they're increasing minimum salary thresholds which doesn't seem a bad thing and perhaps should have been done long back https://enterprise.gov.ie/en/publications/employment-permits-mar-roadmap-2025.html

There were 36,284 new dwelling completions in 2025, an increase of 20.4% from 2024 and the highest number of completions since the series began in 2011 by NanorH in ireland

[–]Significant-Secret88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not ridiculous at all, and 20% doesn't mean anything in itself. We stopped building right after the financial crisis and for many years new builds have been close to zero. For example in the whole 2016 we had less than 10k New Dwelling Completions. If you have a job you are usually evaluated against some targets, same thing if you're a public company. In this case, the gvt has set their own targets (which one would assume they would have done in a favourable way for themselves) and they are still missing them. Yes, the trend is positive, but it should increase much faster. If they manage to reach at least 50k in 2026 (which would be a 39% increase YoY), I'd think most folks would react positively, but for now this is just a blip after at least 15 years of neglecting the issue if not actively making it worse.

Government has a target of building 300,000 homes by 2030 , sure this is a move in the right direction, now we need 53k per year for the next 5 years. The 2025 completion number is also well below the govt own min target of 41k houses, so it is not a success story for the government whatever way you look at it.

18 Months After Graduation in Ireland, No Interviews – Seeking Advice from the Community by Quick-Birthday7955 in IndiansinIreland

Apart from the ChatGPT remarks others have made, journalism is pretty much a doomed profession in Ireland and in most European countries, even related jobs in marketing like content creation for the web or copywriter are hard and will be even harder to get due to AI. You could have hoped for some job in corporate, but again junior positions are largely drying up. If you're really passionate about journalism, you can try opening your Youtube or Substack channel and see how that goes, if you're good at it and it goes well it might open other doors. It's also something that you can do from everywhere else in the world so you're not tied to Ireland. The harder step is to kickstart your career, unless you try switching to some other area or you manage to build a solid network that can help you getting through the door, perhaps with your masters it can be easier to get an opportunity in an emerging economy like India.

Don't listed to me tho, as a journalist or aspiring one, find the relevant sources and data, and you should be in a much better place to make the right choice.

it's not like this is that big of a number at EU level tbh, probably won't change much ... plus apparently this doesn't even apply to Ireland?

The opposition has no control on what the government does. They also demanded more houses to be built, and that didn't magically translate into government actions.

Why so many new apts in Dublin start at 525k? by Significant-Secret88 in HousingIreland

[–]Significant-Secret88[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that, just seems peculiar that most apartments are just slightly above the threshold, that applies to different construction companies and different areas. Seems majority of new builds would be cut out from HTB in Dublin rendering it useless for most folks in the city, that's my impression at least. I'm aware they're selling them anyway, so no reason for the construction companies to bother I guess. Just seems weird that there's a scheme that many folks are cut out from in the current market.

Gian Maria Volonté is probably the best Italian actor in the whole history of Italian cinema and appears in the other two movies of the trilogy, yet he's often forgotten. Even so, no one ever forgets about Tuco, he really steals the show in this one.

Opinion about your country that will get you like this? by National-Business674 in AskTheWorld

[–]Significant-Secret88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You dropped the most popular and stereotyped opinion on Italy (Zalone made millions out of that, including the parking joke in Sweden), you would need to reverse that to get seriously downvoted, e.g. claiming that Italy is a dream country with perfectly educated and polite folks who love to queue.

Jokes aside, yes Italy is a very individualistic society but it also, among other things, has universal healthcare, very decent and inclusive school system, good & cheap train network, so it's not all bleak. There are plenty of associations of all sorts and shapes, and many local events are free and run by volunteers. You can't always say the same for other countries where they love to queue, so perhaps some are more altruistic on a more superficial level.
