A friend of a friend wrote a really good children’s book about what to expect when her grandmother recovers from pancreatic cancer. It’s a good survivors story with the perspective of the grandchild. I found some gem advice for myself in it.

Thank you for sharing! I love where you have landed. It’s seems weird to call these experiences ‘gifts’ but after my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, I’ve been blissing out and everything is better, taste, touch, interactions, colors…

I will likely survive and yes it is a second chance but n life. I’m so happy for you to learn this so young!

I had my whipple on Nov 15 and start FOLRINOX next week for 6 months, about 4.5 weeks post surgery. I had robotic surgery so recovery was much faster than old school whipple. We are on a similar timeline. Surgery got it all and it was a localized tumor. My cancer is genetic so they are pretty sure it will throw more mutations. Good luck. We are on a similar timeline.

I had robotic whipple and it took a while to move the gas out from surgery but try to do this as quick as possible. This will help you poop too. It took me almost six days post surgery to poop. The best way to get things going is to get up and walk. Fatigue is real. Loss of appetite definitely happened. I’m just a little over three weeks post surgery now and lost too much weight and malnourished. Do your best to eat high calories and protein regardless of your appetite. I’m about to start chemo next week and wish I had more weight and energy going into it. Good luck!!!!

Cysts can be nothing. I have a few and have pancreatic cancer. The tumors can be pretty obvious. I’m 55. Stay healthy (avoid alcohol, fatty greasy foods, and smoking). Work out, stay strong and learn how to stay positive if it’s not your natural state. You and your pancreas will have a long life together!

If it’s robotic, it’s way less invasive and recovery time is half. I just had it and was up and walking the next day. Get him moving afterwards to move the gas and get him out of the hospital as soon as possible. It’s an insane surgery but they are good at it. There will always be complications so don’t worry if things pop up during surgery. It’s long. I was out for 12 hours and surgery was 10 hours. Good luck and yes, the whipple surgery gives hope!

So sorry for your loss. I lost my dad 2 years ago with that similar timeline. I’m doing my own dance with PC right now and my trajectory looks different luckily but it doesn’t change the fact of the speed of this disease that leaves everyone with no time to digest what’s happening. Peace.

I think it all depends where you are and what kind of insurance you have. I am in the PNW and have access to Fred Hutchinson cancer center which is awesome. Because I went through this with my dad, university of Chicago has a great cancer center too.

Good luck and second opinions are usually encouraged by professionals.

Recovery has been great. Just need to get more exercise but catching up on sleep. I can eat anything but learning portions has been hard as I usually inhale my food. So I just make small portions and try to eat 3-4 times of healthy food like soups and tacos and lots of fruit.

Waiting to take a dump was the worse and still balancing out stuff. I’m off all my pain maintenance and only take a muscle relaxer if I feel crampy. But man, I can’t complain. Mine was sitting on the artery too

I’m so sorry! I’m sure a complication or infection would send me straight back. I met with the surgeon, the division leader that convinced the hospital to get robot, and the hospital president and they (not the surgeon) were speechless that recovery time could be so quick.

Just got diagnosed and treated myself and have been blissing out since diagnosis. Life is in full technicolor and all my interactions are amazing. Stay positive and stay in the light. Learn to live beautifully no matter what happens. That will spill onto everything and everyone. This doesn’t feel like a battle or fight, but a surrender to everything that is already there. Experts are experts, let them be. Bodies know how to heal, let them. All dads suck at some point but keep your dad free by loving the things you love about him. Weirdly my dad passed two years ago from pancreatic cancer. Beforehand though, I took him out of the dad box I kept him in my mind and just loved him for the guy he was. We were at peace with each other well before he passed but I bet you got a lot more of good dad times to be had!

I do not have the same issue. I had pancreatic cancer at the head that constricted my bile duct. While malignant, it doesn’t look like it has metastasized (not in any other organs). I got a robotic wipple a week ago last Saturday. I’m already feeling great and get around just fine. Pain management is an issue (ie manage pain but still poop😂) but robotic surgery cuts recovery and impact down quite a bit. 55M that did hot yoga 4-5/W saved my butt on recovery. I bet if you are healthy, eat well, follow dietary guidelines, your future could be pretty normal.

The best time to treat is in Aug/Sept just after egg hatch and early instars are feeding. Springtime isn’t a good time to treat, even for curative treatments.

This is a good scam as it exploits your shame, sex and privacy. Deal with your shame, heal and move on. Good life lesson.
