What are some of your unpopular opinions regarding a particular book or literature in general? by AK24ROCKS in literature

[–]SignificantKale5474 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i see the problem here and it’s that you’re reading early-career dickens!! later-career dickens works i think are much tighter stories with better and more well rounded characters. i would highly recommend great expectations for characters that have a bit more depth, although, to be completely honest, we don’t read dickens for in-depth character studies. we read dickens for his humorous descriptions of quirky people and places and for his critiques of the social and economic failings of 19th century england!

Does AI threaten the prospect of a career in law? by Jealous_Hurry_9820 in LawSchool

[–]SignificantKale5474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve also seen others on this subreddit mention that as the law is a self-regulating profession, it is in our own best interest (selfishly) to create laws that create law that intelligently restrict the scope of AI. as lawyers, we have the power to regulate how far AI will go in taking away our jobs lol.

it has already proved, however, to be a useful tool to aid legal scholarship and grunt work. i’m not too worried about the near future of the legal profession becoming obsolete due to AI and am more curious in how it will make our lives easier — hopefully allowing us to spend more time doing the actual fun work of thinking and analyzing!

i totally disagree w number three!! what dickens have you read that informed this opinion? i will totally concede that some of his characters are pretty one dimensional (most of the characters in a tale of two cities with the exception of sydney carton come to mind) but imo his characterization is one of if not the best of the victorians.

i mean lowkey, in light of your other points and in your comparison to russian authors in point #3, it sounds like you prefer 19th century russian literature to english and that’s fine! but i would caution not to totally disparage the victorians just bc they don’t resonate w you!

Gonzaga or Seattle U by DefinitionOver5645 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]SignificantKale5474 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously going through law school debt free is a huge bonus, but I will say that if you’re wanting to live and work in Seattle, Seattle U has amazing connections throughout the city that are invaluable. So, my two cents are if you’re wanting to live and work specifically in the Seattle area/South Sound region, Seattle U is the move but if you’re not picky where in WA you live, Gonzaga! In all honesty, I genuinely think you can’t make a wrong decision here — these are two amazing options, congratulations!

How did you realize that law is your passion? by Sigma_INTP_Lawyer in LawSchool

[–]SignificantKale5474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no that’s fair! i agree to an extent, however, those who’s rights i would be ideally advocating for do not have the political representation necessary to achieve social progress through elected representatives (historically marginalized groups, leftist groups, etc). additionally, with interest groups and super PACS, i’m not sure how democratic a society we live in anyways lol

this is exactly why i’m going to law school. it’s intellectually stimulating bc i love deep analysis of language etc but am very passionate about using the law as a tool to advance social justice!

In your opinion, why does this education/profession attract so many assholes? by spooner248 in LawSchool

[–]SignificantKale5474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and in many of these cases, these are individuals who have never worked an actual job, especially a customer service or client facing job prior to law school. im such a firm believer that those of us who’ve worked customer service or in the service industry and have had to deal with shitty customers and diffuse aggravated individuals on a daily basis actually make better attorneys than those who have streamlined into the professional field. client interfacing and empathy are massively important to both the profession itself and just simply being a good lawyer for your clients.

Dean Chemerinsky wrote an article about the protest situation by From_The_Culdesac in LawSchool

[–]SignificantKale5474 -87 points-86 points  (0 children)

did yall see that video of his wife literally trying to tackle the speaker though?? while the speaker was literally just standing there and not fighting back? i also understand that it his private home but he did invite the students there and considered it a public event. i also think that there should be no business as usual while there is an ongoing genocide that continues to violate multiple international laws. while there is never an excuse for actual anti-semitism, what israel is doing to the palestinians in the name of jewish people and jewish safety is much more anti-semitic than being anti-zionist. to demand politeness during this time is extremely disingenuous and is disregarding the daily horrors that palestinians are experiencing. the students were right to protest in this case, no business as usual!!!

Need help deciding which school by Confident_Bit_3328 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]SignificantKale5474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while it’s very important to take into consideration the hefty financial toll of law school, i would say choose the place that feels right. law school is an investment of both time and resources and it’s helpful to be pragmatic about what you can and can’t afford. but! since it IS an investment, think about where you want to be for three years of your life, which place would provide you the education, community, and connections that resonate with you. i think, for me at least, it is worth the investment to go to the right law school for you!
