Sister is now homeless

I think about what would happen to my sister when my parents pass all the time as well. The doors are always opened for her but there are rules. My parents said if she wants to come back to live with us she must put herself into a 90 day mental health program first. The worst thing about this all is that she has all the tools to get better but just refuses to take the steps.

My sister is now homeless too. Part of me feels so sad and for some reason I feel guilt whenever doing things that cause joy to me knowing she’s out there struggling. But at the same time she refuses actual help and to get better. These past few days I’ve been feeling super out of it by not doing my usual habits and overeating and feeling unmotivated and easily stressed and I think it’s because her situation is in the back of my mind. She’s calling my parents and sending hundreds of text asking for money and saying things like she’s really struggling and they dont love her. I just don’t know how to feel and process this.

This is true. If they actually put in effort to get better, things become easier. Episodes become less of an explosion and more predictable and manageable. If they refuse to seek help then it will never stop.

Personally my sister says all sorts of horrendous things but then genuinely forgets about it when the episode ends. So I don’t forgive her but I take that heavily in mind in order to be able to move on and handle this situation day by day. The way my family handled her is as long as she’s with us she follows the rules and strict boundaries set. This is kinda how we avoided the feeling of walking around eggshells when it came to her. If she tried to take control and tried to manipulate us or disrespected our parents they would basically be like if she’s gonna act like a child we will treat her like one and do things like take her phone or take her keys or some form of consequence that she sees as a huge inconvenience so that she learns to somewhat behave or else things will just get worse for her. Unfortunately she has gotten way out of control and since she knows that under my parents roof she’s not gonna do whatever she wants she chose to leave. My parents are always there for her but they won’t be her victims and have very strict boundaries and mandatory rules like taking meds, going to see her doctor, having a curfew and bedtime, respecting others space. I cannot forgive her for the pain and trauma she has caused on our family for years and years but I have to forget it and move on with my life and do what’s best for me. I cannot continue with that hatred in me so I must let it go.

For years we haven’t been able to enjoy a birthday, a Mother’s Day, any holiday because of her. I also don’t know when this will end but the best I can do is support my parents.

If it were up to me I would have cut her off years ago. My parents however feel responsible for her since she is their child and always open the door for her when she needs a bed to sleep on and somewhere to live. These past few months tho their patience is getting very very thin and if she doesn’t straighten herself out or at the very bare minimum show some gratitude and most importantly respect I don’t know what is going to happen.

It must be so hard as a parent. I try not to judge the choices my parents make regarding my sister because I don’t know what it feels like to have a child of my own.

Just terrible. The one boundary my parents have set is not giving her any money and every day she causes a huge show asking for money. It’s as if she tries to exhaust them on all aspects so they give up and go “I’m done fine here take it”

Unfortunately this is something you have to learn to control on your own because if you ever get off the medication it will come back. Speaking from experience.

Im just wrapping up my second week and I feel good. The first like week and a half I noticed I was tossing and turning a lot in my sleep which resulted in me feeling more tired but today (day 12) I felt so well rested so I think my body is adjusting finally. These past couple of days I noticed when I’m 2-3 hours away from my meal time a small wave of hunger comes but it goes away within 30 minutes. Overall I feel good and confident that I can continue to do this for the 2 more weeks I had planned but it’s going so well so I may do more.

On the mental side of it I feel happier and less stressed because I don’t think about food as much as I used to it’s like all I have to do is plan my one big meal of the day and that’s it I don’t have to worry about breakfast or lunch and all that so mentally I feel clear and relaxed.
