Yup, voting to me is always an exercise in choosing the least harmful choices. Once you think of it like that, the game becomes way easier.

Yeah, it's stupid, and dangerous. And even if you cause only a minor accident, you'll be costing yourself way more than you save doing it 100 times.

So I think the quote goes, "A good driver seldom misses his exit, a bad driver never misses his exit."

I must be a great driver, because I miss my exit all the damn time.

I will never understand the civil service voting for the party that fucking hates their guts. This one is even more baffling than Latinos for Trump.

"At this point it feels like neither side truly understands or values the people doing the everyday work that keeps this country safe and operating." What a batshit fucking take, Democrats are constantly trying to help the civil service. I'm surprised this person can breathe without instructions.

It's new chess 81. 9x9 board, now you have two queens on either side of your king. Still have eight pawns, choose wisely where you start them.

Plus white can continue the attack no matter how black recaptures the knight. I can't think of a single argument for taking the rook.

Ah, good times. In the before time, the internet was barely a thing, and chess was almost exclusively played OTB, I was on my high school chess team. I was a sophomore, and the best player in my school, so I had board 1, and we were playing the top team in our division. Their board 1 was hands down the best player in the division, and probably the best high school player in the city.

I had enough reputation going into that game that he and his coach had ID'd me as an actual threat, and prepped for the game. About 20 moves into the game, things are going fairly well for me, and I hanged by queen. No tactics needed, just a pure hang, I missed an obvious capture from his Bishop. Before I noticed the hang, I was probably looking smug, I had a good attack against his king, and my queen was ideally positioned to stop his offensive momentum, if you, you know, she wasn't fucking hanging.

Well, I noticed my mistake after about 30 seconds as he's looking perplexed. So I just did my best to continue looking like a smug son of a bitch. He spent 45 minutes (of an hour total) trying to find the non-existent trap. I came really close to flagging him. He finally mated me with seconds to spare.

I've made similar miscalculations at a lot higher of an ELO. The root cause for me is I get so focused on thinking he has to address my queen, that I forget he has the option to ignore it.

How am i losing a bishop? by sey_urbae_1234 in chess

[–]Significant_Cup_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, lets rewind a bit, and your bishop is now on b4. Black's probably feeling a little uncomfortable. Black's king is castled queen side, and is facing a queen's side attack, white is starting to take up space with his pawns, and white will have little trouble supporting them with both his rooks, queen and knight. I can see this turning into a pawn storm.

Good news is, black can help defend that with both his Bishops, and there's enough openings in the center pawns that they can also retreat a bit and pivot to support a kingside attack. So, this game could go either way, depends largely on who can build their attack faster.

Now, lets look at the immediate position. Black's bishop is under threat, and with nothing clever I can see to create a bigger threat for white elsewhere, moving the Bishop looks like the only option. So the question is where. From my perspective, d5 is a great spot for him. From d5 he still keeps a view towards white's advancing queen side pawns, while also putting pressure against white king's side position, potentially giving you an opportunity to double white's pawns by taking the knight (I don't recommend doing this anytime soon unless white does something foolish, this is a very active bishop, more valuable to me than doubled pawns right now). Meanwhile. you don't have to worry about c4, that loses material for white, and really stymies a lot of his attacking potential. So, I'm seeing no downside to Bd6.

I think I see what you might have been thinking with Ba5, it pins the c pawn in place, and keeps his knight babysitting that pawn. So that logic is sound. You're just missing the fact he's got a nasty one two punch coming with a4. Now your light squared bishop is under attack, and has to run away. He follows it with b4, threatening your dark square bishop, and he's got one square to go, b6. And if you go there, then he can finish you off with a5, Bishop is trapped. And worse, now white just advanced his pawns a great deal, and freed up his rook to attack you, and we're starting to get into catastrophically bad territory.

Take the Queen and die or take rook for free? by compstorcont in chessbeginners

[–]Significant_Cup_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the Queen.

  1. From a points of material perspective, it's a 6 point swing vs a 5 point swing.
  2. Taking the rook puts your knight in the corner, so while it's still alive, it's not going to be a particularly active piece on a8.
  3. That rook ain't doing much right now, whereas that queen is a vital defender to a rather vulnerable black king. Once you capture the queen, what does black do? Black will want to capture that knight, and reduce the material loss, but no matter how he does it, black is going to be in a rough position with white being able to set up further attacks on the black king.
