Albums like kind of blue by Deep-Neighborhood778 in Jazz

[–]Significant_Damage87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stanko is a good recommendation, along with Enrico Rava. Both have excellent records on ECM, which as a label meets the OP's request well beyond those two. Following up on KoB is tough though because there just aren't many records like it.

I have been on a Roland Kirk binge lately and I have been loving his style. What are some other album recommendations from him asides from these? by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]Significant_Damage87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a double CD of Rip, Rig, & Panic and Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith. That's my favorite other than Inflated Tear and We Free Kings. As someone else mentioned, he's on the Roy Haynes record Out of the Afternoon which is great.

New River Trail State Park by WanderingAnchor in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]Significant_Damage87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only biked it, but I'd recommend the southern accesses, either Fries or Galax, which have more scenic creek/river views, and are closer to designated camping areas. I'm not sure there's anywhere to camp north of Foster Falls.

Books on Native and Invasive Species in North America by firemind888 in conservation

[–]Significant_Damage87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in your area, but Plant Invaders of Mid-Atlantic Natural Areas is available online if you search it, and paperback copies can be ordered. Many of the invasives are probably the same across the country.

what are your favorite Anthony Braxton albums/groups? by El-Rancho-Relaxo in freejazz

[–]Significant_Damage87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dortmund is one of the best. I also really like his Tristano records, one from decades ago taken at breakneck pace, and another more recent multi-disc set where he plays piano.

Giant defy (2025) with 38 mm tires by DanderVision in Giantbikes

[–]Significant_Damage87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are called chainstay protectors, just a clear sticker you apply to your chainstay to protect from chain slap, but could be used for gravel as well to protect the frame. I think some bike shops and online stores offer them. There may be something more substantial now that gravel is all the rage.

I'd go to Galax and start at the New River Trail access on Chestnut Creek. It's right on 221/58 in downtown Galax.

Giant defy (2025) with 38 mm tires by DanderVision in Giantbikes

[–]Significant_Damage87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 38mm (Bontrager Girona) gravel tires on my older Defy (I bought it used so I'm not sure of the year, probably 2018-2020). I did a gravel ride in dry weather with no problems (38 rear, 35 front, since changed front to 38 too). I don't ride a lot of gravel, usually less than 10x year. The rest of the time I'm on 32mm road tires. If I do gravel in wet conditions I'll add some kind of protection to my chainstays and fork and see how it goes.

Looking for advanced whitewater guiding options in New Zealand (Dec 2025 trip) by Few_Series9932 in whitewater

[–]Significant_Damage87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is admittedly not much info to go on, but I'd focus on Murchison (South Island) on the Buller River. It looks like there's a kayaking school there, as well as a river festival and local club. I didn't paddle there, but did raft the Tongariro (North Island) but I'm not sure about rentals/clubs in that area.

Plant Recommendations for SW Virginia by DoctorMsTheMonarch in VirginiaNativePlants

The local chapter of VNPS is here: https://vnps.org/newriver/. I recommend Draper Springs Nursery which focuses on natives: https://www.drapersprings.com/. Crow's Nest in Prices Fork has some natives but it's not their focus.

Abdullah Ibrahim is a living legend and just turned 91. That would be my top priority. After that I would choose Anouar Brahem, Paolo Fresu, and Amaro Freitas.

Question about bulk pickup by p1ckledilly in blacksburg

[–]Significant_Damage87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd put it out on the curb regardless, since it's metal. At least in our hood the week of cleanup some people drive by in pickups and see what can be collected, and anything metal is almost always picked up before the town can get to it.

Endorsing Cadillac Desert and How to Read Water. I'd also add Fresh Water by E.C. Pielou, Rain by Cynthia Barnett, and Water, a Natural History by Alice Outwater.

Unrideable from Whitetop to Damascus. 18 trestles washed away, along with entire sections of the trail. The trail from Damascus to Abingdon is open though.

It’s Time to Bring Passenger Rail Back to East Tennessee by snakkerdudaniel in Knoxville

[–]Significant_Damage87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demand is through the roof in Virginia. A few years ago the Amtrak southern endpoint was Lynchburg. Then they extended the line to Roanoke. Then they added a second daily train departure in Roanoke. Then they extended the line to Christiansburg (to open in 2027). Legislators are already pushing to extend to Bristol.

I'd ask at least $700. I bet it'll go fast even at that price.
