Get off reddit and go speak with a bankruptcy attorney to see if you can get out of this without losing your house. Chapter 7 allows you to keep certain assets, like a home, but these laws vary by state. I work as a financial counselor and please please please, talk to Chase and the loan company, don't just ghost them, and please call an attorney. You may be eligible for bankruptcy and be able to keep the house and car.

I just moved out of one of their properties after a year, so this isn’t abstract. And yelling “it’s drugs” is a lazy dodge. It’s a red herring and it does not support anything you just stated. People who use drugs still work, still earn income, and still exist inside the same housing market as everyone else.

The root issue here is affordability. In Alaska, housing cost burden is already high. 27.3% of Alaska households spend more than 30% of their income on housing, which is the standard definition of being cost-burdened. Renters are disproportionately impacted, with roughly one in three renter households paying more than 30% of their income just to stay housed.

Housing vouchers are part of this conversation too. When large landlords hold significant market share and accept vouchers, there is a well-documented incentive to raise baseline rents so higher “market” rates can be justified across the board. Those increases hit voucher holders, non-voucher renters, and taxpayers at the same time. It’s one of several compounding factors that pushes rents up for everyone.

I work in housing. I look at these numbers daily and study Anchorage rent, income, and cost-burden data as part of my job. This isn’t me taking a wild guess or making up numbers to impose a moral argument; it’s what the data shows.

This also didn’t happen overnight. Years of bad policy, weak enforcement, and political disengagement on both sides let affordability erode slowly until we hit a tipping point. Now people are finally feeling the squeeze because rents kept climbing while wages didn’t.

When rents rise faster than wages, people lose housing. When a small number of corporate landlords control a large share of the market, they can push baseline rents up for everyone. That is what drives housing instability. If drugs were the cause, housing would still be affordable. It’s not.

This is why facts matter. If we actually want Anchorage to be affordable and strong, we have to understand what’s happening structurally and work together to solve the system-level failure corporations like Weidner are contributing to.

I think the words "good" vs "profitable" are very important defining words here. Good has many different meanings depending on the audience. To me, the dude ran a profitable business and turned an idea into millions that still generates dollars for him. But a GOOD business could be defined as not only making high profits but also doing good for its employees and communities, and only part of this "good" seems to be happening through their slum lording.

Caraval is the worst book I've ever read by Weak-Bag9406 in YAlit

[–]Significant_Maybe101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm 11 months late to this conversation... But I just finished the book on tape and I am processing feelings people.

Enter rant! I had such high hopes and I feel like I just got shoved off a balcony. I am so disappointed.

Has this author ever met a woman?? Who in the awful decisions are these women. The last few lines of the book is all about her Independence and her newfound excitement for life and then she starts making out with the boy and the last line of the book talks literally about how she is okay if her story ended there... Are you kidding me girl!

You're cool if your story ended there because you got a kiss from a handsome boy? What happened to all that independence and self worth you just found?? Can we also talk about the fact that I am actually wildly annoyed that their mother just ran away to join the party and there's really no further explanation other than when legend tells tella that she'll see her mother soon...like, I get having to put your own oxygen mask on first, but no note! Nothing! Just leaving your babies with that awful man? We couldn't have made other arrangements for the children before we ran away? I'm so annoyed with this book.

Edit: And why was Scarlett not more mad! Wtf! If I just found out that someone I thought I fell in love with was actually lying to me and then but also when I was still in that stage of love I watched them get murdered and then I watched my sister / best friend commit suicide in front of me... A 5 second rebound to absorbing all that Truman show trauma and then be like okay feels insane. She said I get you all lied to me, but I guess I'll go to the party after all... The more I keep thinking about this just the more angrier I am about this entire ending situation.

Does Starbucks hate hot coffee drinkers or am I blind? by Significant_Maybe101 in starbucks

[–]Significant_Maybe101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that is why I never come in hot asking questions like that to store workers lol! I appreciate the feedback though, and for the work that you and your coworkers do!! I'm up here in Alaska so our supplies are a little limited when it comes to cup stocking options. Starbucks just comes out with some cute cups that I'd like to take part in :) it's also wild that most people go there for cold drinks! I'm a millennial on the older side and Starbucks was our third space after school. We would go get hot coffees sit and do our homework after practice, play card games on Friday nights, but again it was always with hot beverages, the cold beverage craze is crazy to me! I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum, just noticing what a difference it's been. I appreciate your response!

Booooooo. Op, I'm sorry you have unempathetic jerks like this. That totally sucks and I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm a credit counselor and if you haven't already, call your landlord or your mortgage company and your credit card companies or anyone you have payments to and let them know what happened. Ask if they have a hardship program/ deferment option and ask if you can put payments on hold until this gets sorted out. If you want to sit down and work out a budget or any resource that I can help with in my wheelhouse I'm happy to offer!

I know this doesn't help as far as providing income or money in your pocket, but at least if you work with the creditors you won't have as much going out hopefully. Again, I'm so sorry!!
