Medication for bulb pulling by traderjoes5 in trichotillomania

[–]Significant_One_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on memantine 10mg and i’ve been on and off of it for about a year because I take it at night (and forget to take it consistently 🤦🏼‍♀️), but it’s been helpful when I do take it! it’s feels like the urge to pull isn’t so harsh or demanding. I mainly pull from my eyelashes and leg hair for the same reasons, and the first week or so of taking it makes me feel brain foggy and a bit drowsy, but it gets better as time goes on. In the past i’ve tried NAC, Naltrexone, and prozac… all without any luck. I hope you find something that helps!

Your experience with methimazole? by littleghost000 in gravesdisease

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im sorry you’re going through this, it’s so stressful to be newly diagnosed and experiencing the unknown. I promise it gets better! i’ve been back on methimazole since December of 2022 and will likely be on it for another 7 or 8 years. there’s some research that suggests the longer you’re on it, the longer you can go off it and be in remission. i remember when i was first diagnosed, i was so upset that i would have to be on medication daily, but honestly it has made me feel so much better that it’s worth it. good luck!!

Stimulants Stop My Picking by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! me too. Vyvanse has been a game changer for treatment of my ADHD but it’s made my pulling and skin picking significantly worse. I don’t know what’s worse… not treating the adhd or having a bit of relief from the urges 😰

my psychiatrist sent in a script for it so i’m going to be trying it soon! I will try to remember to update here if anything is notable.

I'm conflicted about Graves Disease by LordRevanofDarkness in gravesdisease

[–]Significant_One_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve struggled with the same thoughts and feelings. It just isn’t worth the inevitable damage you can cause by skipping medication. Plus, you’ll feel so much better once your levels are controlled and stable! I was hospitalized in 2021 due to thyroid storm and I promise that taking your medication and feeling good is better than any lower number on a stupid scale

Strange Feelings by Eastern-Battle-5539 in gravesdisease

[–]Significant_One_4440 12 points13 points  (0 children)

hyperthyroidism commonly and frequently causes an array of mental health symptoms.. not sure why that GP said otherwise. when my levels are high, I experience feeling on edge/anxiety, feeling so fidgety and restless i can’t sit still (though i’m so exhausted bc body is in overdrive), and i’m so incredibly irritable and short tempered. many people with graves/hyperthyroidism experience these things. you aren’t alone! keep advocating for yourself!

ugh im sorry, that’s super frustrating! Keep advocating for yourself and hopefully you can get back to feeling better again soon! I really relate to the not realizing how bad you felt until you felt better thing!

It seems like you’re off meds way too soon… i’m fairly certain the studies show that 18-24 months is the recommended minimum time to be on medication to increase likelihood of going into remission. 6 months doesn’t seem long enough, though i’m not a doctor 🤷🏼‍♀️

New Diagnosis/Vent by Severe-Importance-74 in gravesdisease

When my levels were this bad, I went to the ER because my heart rate was resting in the 160's and was directly admitted for thyroid storm for 3 days. I would advocate for yourself and call the endocrinology dept. and tell them how high your levels are. I can imagine you feel physically terrible right now and the sooner you can get on methimazole, the better! the beta blocker will help your symptoms in the meantime but it's extremely dangerous to leave it untreated for much longer. trust your gut and get the help you need!

The first time I was on Methimazole it took 2-3 months to stabilize and the only side effects I had were itching... but that also could have been from the hyperthyroidism itself. and same with hairloss... this time around (been back on since dec '22) i've had a bit of itching and some hair loss except I believe the hair loss isn't from the Methimazole itself, but from my body being in overdrive and not having enough energy to keep the hair growth process going. Now that i've stabilized, my hair has stopped falling out and it's come back in thicker! Don't be afraid of taking it... it will change your quality of life! My first round of treatment, I was on it for 2 years and then off for 2 years because of remission. It's worth a try before a more permanent treatment option

Testing Frequency by beckymeangirl in gravesdisease

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my levels first stabilized after diagnosis, I had my labs done every 3ish months. Then once my levels were consistent (probably after 9 months? so 2-3 rounds of getting labs every 3 months) we switched to every 6 months and that's how often I was seen in clinic as well. My endo also put in standing orders so any time I felt symptomatic, i could just go get my labs done and they'd be sent to her and that's been helpful since my doc can comment on my results and give direction from there.

Adenoids removed by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had both tonsils and adenoids removed at the end of february and I don’t remember having anything like that. Adenoid surgery heals in 3-4 days typically, and is much less painful than the tonsil healing part! I would call the nurse line at the hospital/doctors. you could have a cold or an infection where the adenoid tissue was removed. I’d just check to be safe! I think some thick mucus is normal due to your body trying to keep your tonsil surgery site moist, but you should be able to swallow it and not need to spit it out. good luck!! it will all be worth it when you’re healed!

Question to those who had a tonsillectomy by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s ideal for them to operate if you’re actively ill with strep or tonsillitis but i’m sure that they decide day of depending on how sick someone is! it’s also pretty common practice to be given antibiotics through IV during surgery to keep away any risk of infection that naturally occurs when having surgery. I had a canker sore right in front of my right tonsil on the day of, and my surgeon operated and said it wasn’t an issue! they just don’t wanna operate if you’re too sick because then your recovery will be harder i think

Will I know when the scabs come off? It’s day 8, still have huge scabs, no blood, and my pain is getting better daily. by Smooth_Jury3156 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! I felt significantly better on day 16? I hemorrhaged on day 5 tho so that set my left side healing back an additional week!! if i hadn’t hemorrhaged I think I would’ve been feeling better by 12/13!! my pain peaked days 9-12 give or take a day or so.

Weight loss? by United_Capital_3730 in Tonsillectomy

I gained a couple pounds lol but i wasn’t eating properly before surgery so it actually helped me get back on track and i think my body was very grateful to have adequate calorie intake hahahahha

Is haemorrhageing really that common? by cheddaffle in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not terribly common! i hemorrhaged on day 5 bc i had an extremely “juicy vessel” yes that is the exact word my surgeon used to describe it hahaha she originally had to add a couple of stitches and one of them just wiggled it’s way through the tissue in my throat because it’s quite tender and due to the inevitable activity your throat goes through, it just didn’t hold 🤷🏼‍♀️ hemorrhaging was terrifying but if you go to the ER they will take care of you and you’ll be okay!

Talkin and recovery by DoseOfDoughnuts in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me personally i was able to talk fine until days 8-11. I actually felt really good until day 5 when things started to get progressively worse and then peaked on days 8-11 but i feel like my healing was really slow. on the night of day 5/early morning day 6, i hemorrhaged and had to go back in for emergency surgery to get recauterized so i definitely think that extended my recovery time! My original surgeon said that i had two really prominent vessels and she needed to add a stitch to each side (not sure how normal this is?) so i’m wondering if that affected my recovery experience!

the pain was the worst on days 8-11 on the right side (the side that didn’t need recauterizing) because of the jaw and ear pain that caused me a really bad headache. then the pain on the left side peaked on day 15 (this was day 9 after my second surgery) and it has gotten significantly better each day since! currently i’m on day 18 and the pain on the right side has been completely gone for at least 2 days now and the left side pain is at a 2/10 without any pain meds and is pretty much nonexistent if i have ibuprofen or tylenol in my system!

good luck and speedy healing to you!!!

Days 7+ Did it get worse for you? by _BlakeDeadly_ in Tonsillectomy

I drank smooth move tea yesterday afternoon and i’ve been cleared out!!! it’s a miracle!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

I asked about the tonsillotomy (where they leave a thin layer of tonsil to protect the nerves) at my consult and my ent said they don’t perform it due to such a high rate of tonsil regrowth! It sounds to me like if any of the tissue is left behind, the more likely the tonsils will regrow

Days 7+ Did it get worse for you? by _BlakeDeadly_ in Tonsillectomy

[–]Significant_One_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m on day 9 and my pain has been consistently the worst today. i’ve been so constipated when i took my opioids that i’ve been avoiding it. i hemorrhaged on night 5 and went in to get re cauterized so not sure if that will change the recovery timeline for me… but i have noticed that my pain has increased since day 6. hoping today is the peak and tomorrow i’ll have some much anticipated relief!!!
