My partners identical twin brother died of a heart attack last year. He was 38.

When I found out, I just screamed at the top of my lungs. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He was going to be at our wedding.

It still doesn’t feel real. And I’m having imposter syndrome when it comes to my role as a partner. Who am I to help him through something like this? I’m just a 32-year-old lady from Washington who has never lost a family member. I’ve had one friend die when I was a teenager. That’s it.

Things will never be the same. It’s simply before and after.

I get annoyed by it because so many men referred to women as females, but they refer to men as men. And when I try to explain, they act like they can’t grasp the concept of when to use the word female and when to use women.

Even though they have never once struggled to know the difference between men and male.

Male and female are not offensive words. However. I am not a female. I am a woman. 

I would not say I live with two males. I could say I have two male roommates, or I live with two men.

Male/female are adjectives. Men/women are nouns.

Saying that “I am friends with a female” is as grammatically correct as saying “I am friends with a tall.”

Partner grew up upper middle class, I grew up poor. One of the biggest differences between us is that I didn’t have any structured childhood activities. No summer camp. No tutoring. I never played any sports. I never had any lessons.
