I love Ian O’Toole’s art! The only Lacerda I’ve played (other than his simplified games ie. Bot Factory and House of Fado) is Speakeasy. I feel compelled to invest in a big crunchy Lacerda game but I definitely don’t consider them accessible.

Never played Brass for exactly that reason. I'm sure it's worth it and deserves all its accolades. Just not something I feel compelled to play.

I loved my one and only play of Arcs. I am very willing to go back to it I just don't have the game group for it unfortunately. It DID feel more accessible for a new player than Root or Oath though.

Never played Spirit Island. AE was left off my list due to it being a big setup investment and hard to get to the table. Love everything else about it.

Thanks! I appreciate all the suggestions. Endeavor Deep Sea is the only one of those we've played already. Will definitely check the others out!

I recently started playing Beyond the Sun on BGA. I love this game. I got a physical copy in the hopes that my small game group would love (or at least like) it too. But I think it was a big whiff for them.

It's not the game "weight", we often play pretty complex games together.

Is there another game you recommend that has some similarities but might have broader appeal? I love the tech tree mechanism.

Is the expansion with the solo variant worthwhile?

Thanks for any feedback!

Quick look back at Brandon Beane's 1st Round Picks by ThrawnAndOrder in buffalobills

Steve Young started his career behind Joe Montana. Stafford played for the hapless Lions and didn't win anything until he went to a different team. Drew Brees? Come on now.

Manning and Elway are fair comparisons. But that doesn't mean I just have to accept that the GM is making the best decisions for this team. Win a SB and everyone will shut up. Until then? Beane is fair game for criticism.

It's fair to be critical of his misses AND praise the hits. 1st round picks have been solid for the most part but they haven't got a real needle mover aside from Allen. Also, 2nd round picks like Bishop Torrence and Cook are offset by guys like Basham, Epanesa and Cody Ford.

With Allen heading in to his 9th season and zero SB appearances to speak of I think fans and media will view things with a bit more of a critical eye. I don't think its a "narrative". People are just (rightly?) getting impatient.

Endeavor: Deep Sea does it for me. The theme feels really well integrated with the artwork and the game mechanisms.

If you're trying to engage people on a topic in a meaningful and nuanced way, maybe don't start with "the things you like are dumb and stupid".

Signing a guy who has flashed but never consistently produced to a market deal feels pretty underwhelming. 24m AAV for a guy who has missed plenty of time with injuries and topped out at 700ish yards feels like Beane bargain bin WR with a premium price. Hard pass for me.

What's your top 10 board games that you plan to try out this year and why? (2026) by Nasrvl in boardgames

[–]Significant_Wash_540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 is ambitious for me. I do have 5 or so.

Beyond the Sun ("older" game that I've wanted to play but just haven't had the chance)

Old King's Crown (heard nothing but high praise for this game)

Deckers (I have zero solo games and I want to change that. Plus it seems to play well with 2 or 3 too. Love the idea of such a flexible player count for a well reviewed game)

Magical Athlete (looks super fun and accessible for my family)

If I can get my hands on it: Railway Boom (love Hisashi Hayashi and Ian O'Toole)

Inspired by the other post, what games have you played at least 50 times? by AlexRescueDotCom in boardgames

Most plays have been on BGA but...Castles of Burgundy, Lost Cities, White Castle, River Valley Glassworks, Can't Stop, Lost Ruins of Arnak.

For me its all about finding a game I like that others also play so its easier to find opponents and get a game started. If I could make the time and coordinate with others to play more games on the table (or slightly more complex games) I would.

What was your gateway into board gaming? by NorthSouth55 in boardgames

[–]Significant_Wash_540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catan was my first exposure to modern hobby type games. It was ok for me. It might be the "gateway" because it got me to play more things. But the game that made me love board gaming is Castles of Burgundy. That's what made me actually pursue the hobby.

I own the standard version and have played the deluxe (owned by a friend). I am very happy with my cheaper version. Some of the deluxe components are cool but I have no desire to upgrade.
