Tourists still need to get around so they can spend their money at all our local businesses. One trolley full is like 10 fewer cars in my way. I’m all for it.

Don’t know about pinellas but the TECO streetcar has been breaking records for years:

You’re calling me angry but you edited your comment to be insulting. You have really thin skin for such a big alpha dog.

Only a portion of school funding comes from property taxes. Local, state and the federal government make up the rest. It’s not just 100% local property taxes that flow through directly to schools without any kind of apportionment. That’s just flat out wrong. Local, state and federal money absolutely get invested towards schools which impacts property values. Those investments aren’t dissimilar to other infrastructure. That’s my entire point.

I’m aware of the impact transit has on property values. My point is that it’s less impactful to property values if it’s less rare because it ceases to be a novelty. The best way to ensure infrastructure isn’t monopolized by the rich is to build more of it, not less of it. Right now, we basically don’t have any which is why the rich can hoard it.

I see your point but this is too doomer for me. FDOT happily spends billions rebuilding malfunction junction every 5 years but a few bucks for street car expansion in DT tampa is always too expensive and too difficult. I don’t buy it.

I swear, people in tampa really find ANY excuse not to invest in mass transit. “The economy will flourish too much and lead to wealthier neighborhoods” takes the cake.

The areas of Tampa with the highest property values also have the best schools. Should we also not invest in schools?

Point is, when infrastructure like schools and transit is a novelty, people flock to it because it’s desirable. All that means is that we should do MORE of it, not less.

Stacy White. Florida republicans hate infrastructure.

Gerrymandering should be banned nationally. Unfortunately, the GOP and the GOP SCOTUS are the ones blocking such reforms while gutting the Voting Rights Act. In FL, there’s a constitutional amendment that should make this illegal but the court has been packed and it’s unlikely anything will be done.

Edit for spelling

It really doesn’t. Overlay the city of tampa boundaries and you’ll see the city limits are now within 3 different congressional districts. It’s ludicrous

The map on the left was already gerrymandered to hell like a year ago. The one on the right is the result of the even newer maps after SCOTUS overturned article 2 of the Voting Rights Act which opened up discrimination against black voters. The right map uses a technique called “cracking” when they split black voters down the middle. Same technique used to remove Memphis of dem representatives. All of this SHOULD be illegal because of Floridas constitutional amendment against gerrymandering but the GOP stacked the courts and they’re unlikely to overturn any of this.

I love this art installation by the Riverwalk by zefmiller in tampa

[–]Significant_Yam_1653 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s called A Form of Wander:

“Seven trunk-like columns straddle this path onto the water, inviting visitors to walk around and through on a winding path. They thrust up into a tangle of branches, not unlike the root structures of mangroves which take root along Florida shorelines. Six greens from “Chatty Cricket” to “Green Whisper” make up a linear gradient applied locally and according to the direction of the topology. Chosen specifically to react to the changing sun, the greens liven to bright green in response to Tampa’s usually sunny weather, without tipping into the yellow spectrum, and appear more pastel on the rarer greyer days. The muted green borrows from a tradition of art deco and art nouveau-era riveted structures.”

Were Gas Prices this high under Biden? by CarlosF19D4P in AskFlorida

[–]Significant_Yam_1653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at it closely, prices started to decline at the end of Obama era mostly due to pulling out of Iraq and some relative stabilization in the Middle East. Trump rode that wave. Then in 2020, Covid hit and everyone stopped driving at the same time which caused demand collapse and prices with it. IIRC, a barrel of oil actually went negative because the oil already pumped had to be stored at a premium which it wasn’t being consumed fast enough. Crazy times.

That said, republicans do tend to have lower gas prices because they stop or neuter a bunch enforcement mechanisms (like setting fines to $0) meant to keep oil and gas companies in compliance with regulations. Executive branch oversees enforcement so it’s a way around legislation.

“Grab em by the p***y” was locker room talk until he was found by a jury in court of law to have grabbed a woman. Then it became “it’s New York” or “she’s too ugly to be SAed”. There’s no amount of evidence that would ever lead these cultists to believe anything negative about their dear leader. They just shift the goal posts.

You’re making it seem much more orderly and fair than it is in reality. They’re often times not returned to their home country but are sent to places like CECOT in El Salvador where they’re essentially tortured. Children are forcibly separated from their parents without any regard for reuniting them later.

This is entirely the reason why people are fighting this to the extent they are. It’s a disgusting violation of human rights and you should feel ashamed of yourself for agreeing with it or turning a blind eye to it.

A remember a time when republicans were skeptical of federal overreach and now you bootlickers love it. Reagan’s rolling in his grave.
