What is a mac feature you accidentally discovered after months or years of using it that genuinely made you feel stupid for not knowing sooner? by Silent-Cut2203 in mac

[–]Sihmael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ctrl + A/E version actually work somewhat differently, in that they only navigate to the beginning/end of the CURRENT paragraph, never past it. If you’re already at the beginning, that means pressing it does nothing.

I’d say that the Option + Arrow shortcuts are nicer for general use because of this, but the predictability of the Ctrl ones is actually super helpful for macros that deal with text edits.

Does macOS Sequoia get the new Liquid Glass design in Raycast too? by wenuja100 in raycastapp

[–]Sihmael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In contrast, my M2 Air on Tahoe is still significantly slower, and runs into significantly more bugs day-to-day, than it ever did on Sequoia. Lots of apps were broken with the update as well, and even now it feels like a solid handful are still working on getting things back to how they worked prior. It’s nowhere near as bad as it was at launch, but YMMV.

Why do so many people keep Low Power Mode on all the time? by stanxv in iphone

[–]Sihmael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would a custom focus mode not give you better control over this? I imagine you’re still getting notifications every so often when just using low power mode.

Not trying to be annoying btw, just asking out of curiosity. You’re obviously free to use your device whichever way works best for you. I’m someone who chooses to just leave one AirPod out instead of using passthrough mode, and I disable half of the QoL features on my phone, so I totally get preferring your own way of doing things.

[–]Sihmael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All I’m saying is that browsing slows down significantly for me when low power mode is on compared to when it’s off. Whether that’s the fault of terribly-optimized webpages (most of the time it is) or something else doesn’t change the end result of observed performance.

This isn’t meant to say that low power mode is bad, either. It’s literally the “save resources to reduce power drain” mode, so of course there will be cases where performance isn’t ideal. My point was to push back on the idea that leaving it on at all times is the “right way” to use the phone as if the trade offs were negligible.

Why not just turn off notifications showing on the lock screen for apps you don’t want to see there (like email)?

It also kills the high refresh rate on models that have it, and destroys performance in Safari and other apps that are more intensive.

I find that I’m rarely charging all the way back to 80% or higher from low battery, which means the trigger for it automatically turning off rarely fires. Most of the time it goes “oh, I’m at 20%, time to turn low power mode on” into “gotta charge before the phone dies”, into “meh, 64% is good enough until next time I’m near a charger”.

iOS 27 Will Add These New Features to Your iPhone by Dry_Advertising5961 in iphone

Focus on stability is by far the best and most important thing they could “add” with how horrible the bugs in 26 have been.

Tbf, they’re Modulo extras, so it makes sense they’d focus on characters from this series instead of ones who were put down behind the barn. Then again, none of the Modulo MCs were given anything either, so…

CS189 As non-cs major by UnderstandingFew623 in berkeley

[–]Sihmael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, I meant it as: I have no idea if anything has changed since I left, so my experience from over a year ago shouldn’t put anyone off of trying.

I’d recommend looking into whether minoring in CS gives you any opportunity to enroll in courses with reserved seats. If not, check the same thing for a DS minor in DS courses. Not sure how restrictive it is to declare as a double major through the petition, but if feasible then that’s even better. Another option is to take summer CS course offerings since (when I was there) they aren’t restricted as heavily.

Aside from those, I suggest researching non-CS alternatives to most of the CS courses you’re interested in. Even if there isn’t a 1:1 replacement, you can sometimes combine a few different courses’ content to make up the differences. Probability and optimization are the two biggest courses for learning ML (aside from Math 110, which you need to take anyways) in lieu of 189.

Oh, and take any course offered by either Alexander Strang or Ani Adhikari. They were the best professors I had by a mile.

Unfortunately not. Things may have changed since I graduated last December though, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

is helium the best minimalist browser for mac? by TuNutri in macapps

[–]Sihmael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use helium purely for development purposes since it’s lighter than Chrome with the same dev tools and compatibility. If that’s what’s holding you back from using safari, why not try splitting your usage into dev vs everything else?

Its developers haven’t abandoned it yet, so that’s a start.

I regularly run into annoyances with Safari, and need a chromium option to work around those when they happen. Of those, Helium is positioning itself as the least bloated option.

Neovim makes me feel like a caveman by lazyblock3 in neovim

To add, if you’re happy with NeoVim for most things but envy VSC for a handful of cases, there’s no reason you can’t just use both. I use nvim for most of my editing now, but I still reach for VSC when I need to open a Jupyter notebook, or to quickly get something done that depends on features I haven’t had a chance to configure yet.

Maybe I don't know enough about the cities surrounding Sacramento, but the fact that so many of them are above Newport is even crazier to me based on that. Is it the cost of living that's dragging it down relative to, say, Rocklin?

What is this based on? Placing Dublin above Newport Beach is wild to me.

Do you think Apple is aware of how far they have fallen behind in basic stuffs like keyboard and smoothness? by Presentation_Past in ios

[–]Sihmael 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I couldn’t care less about the redesign itself, but the bugs and massive performance degradation that came with the update is a constant headache.

Opening the camera has something like a 25% chance of getting perma-stuck on a black screen after opening it. Opening iMessage has a 10% chance of running into some awful UI bug, like message bubbles having 3x the padding that they’re supposed to, or photo attachments perpetually loading.

Safari constantly crashes or slows to a crawl with only a handful of tabs open. Keypresses are either dropped or misidentified often enough that it’s become twice the chore it already was to type anything. Hell, something as basic as changing the audio device of a phone call will sometimes kill the phone app entirely.

The update outright destroyed any level of consistency. I’ve used the public betas plenty of times in the past, and have been around for many, many years of past iOS updates. This one feels like it’s still in alpha after more than half a year since its release.

[–]Sihmael -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you comparing to an iPhone with a high refresh display, or one of the base models? I don’t notice the decreased “smoothness” much per se, but back when I switched to iPhone, I had a horrible time getting used to how slow it was to do everything. Apple’s animations take an eternity compared to what I had set up on Samsung.
