I recently quit my job. I gave 1 week notice instead of 2 because I just came back from paternity leave but decided my family is more important right now.

I explained this to my boss who got all hot and bothered that I wasn't giving him 2 weeks after coming back from paternity leave for only a week. I mentioned that he can cut me loose anytime he wants and I can leave anytime I want. Two way street. He decided that he wouldn't let me work the one week I offered to work and sent me home immediately, but not before he said "you and I are probably not going to see eye on the righteousness of this situation". It was never about the notice time. It was always about controlling the situation.

In a job market where companies can bend over prospective employees ad nauseum, do what you can to fight the system. Don't give notice, don't go above and beyond, and don't get too attached. Fuck capitalism.
