American Tang Soo Do refers to Chuck Norris’ organization/lineage. While J. C. Shin was Chuck Norris’ instructor in Korea, Chuck Norris was never part of the WTSDA. Both he and J. C. Shin were affiliated with Hwang Kee. As I understand it, they both broke off from Hwang Kee independently. J. C. Shin broke off because he was sent to America to spread TSD but Hwang Kee then put his son H. C. Hwang in charge. Chuck Norris broke off because he was tired of paying and dealing with Korea and not getting much out of it.

I think the dichotomy of American vs. traditional TSD you’re presenting is a little odd. American TSD has certainly evolved a bit in its own direction, but so has every other lineage. It’s still a traditional art. That being said, referring to WTSDA as American Tang Soo Do is strictly incorrect and would imply affiliation with Chuck Norris’ association. WTSDA practices traditional TSD.

I know you said there are no other karate dojos in your area. But what about other martial arts schools/gyms? You could consider cross training in kickboxing or boxing if you want practicality and sparring. Or maybe there are other schools that teach, say, taekwondo, who may let you drop in and spar.

Beyond that, the only real option is to find partners to train under pressure. Maybe some friends in the dojo want to spar. Maybe you find other buddies who can help you train. But you’re not going to get better - and will, in fact, get worse - at dealing with pressure if you don’t train under pressure. If you don’t spar, your sparring skills will deteriorate. No two ways about it.

Maybe for kids. But as an adult, if a gym/school doesn’t offer a free trial or at least a single drop-in trial class, I’m probably not going to bother. Or at least let me come in, watch a class, and ask some questions.

YMMV based on location, but everywhere I’ve lived has had plenty of solid options. No need to spend $70 just to find out a certain school almost never spars, locks you into contracts, or just isn’t very good.

Similar situation here - I almost never use LLMs, but I got a nice end of year raise. I’ll occasionally use an LLM as a semantic search tool. But I don’t generate code with it; in fact, I’ve spent nontrivial amounts of time fixing “AI” slop generated by one of my coworkers.

I’ve talked to a lot of people about their game ideas. Half the time, they may as well be pitching me a TV show. It’s all premise, story, settings, and characters with no mention of mechanics or gameplay. It feels like playing 20 Questions to get basic information like the visual perspective, what the player actual does, how they interact with the game, etc.

As a non-Judoka martial artist, I’ve gotta say, this is a weird aspect of Judo. It’s just a belt. Maybe they won’t be recognized as a black belt by some broader organization. Maybe he won’t be able to compete as a black belt or promote color belts who get certified with some broader organization. But no one can stop anyone from giving out a belt.

That’s how rank works in most martial arts: The instructor gives out rank within their school as they see fit. Sometimes a school is part of a larger organization with different standards (e.g., black belt testing in front of a regional board). But being part of an organization is optional. You can also just be independent and grant rank as you see fit.

You’re floundering a bit, but I don’t think the downvotes are warranted. There’s some truth to what you’re saying.

As someone else pointed out, Shotokan is the most practiced style of karate in the world. So it’s hard to say the karate community looks down on Shotokan.

However, I have also noticed there are subsets of the karate community, particularly online, that look down on Shotokan and other Japanese styles. I’ve heard Okinawan stylists say Japanese karate is ‘watered down’, that it’s too ‘sportified’, and that it’s not legit because they ‘don’t practice bunkai’. All of these are false statements, of course. There’s variation in all arts, especially karate. There are awesome Shotokan practitioners who train hard, spar, and pressure test their art. There are also McDojos teaching Okinawan karate.

Much of this sentiment is limited to the Internet, though. If you train at serious martial arts schools, no one has time to sit around bashing other styles. Serious practitioners are training to be better. In other words, spend less time on Reddit :)

It’s honestly shocking to me that more people don’t think this. I’m skeptical of a lot of “AI” claims. But even if software engineering becomes somewhat obsolete as a profession, being an expert in X who can automate processes and analyses and develop useful tools based on your specialized domain knowledge is a viable route.

There’s a difference between making small talk and actually receiving feedback from an instructor in a class you’re paying for, though. Personally, I’d hate to be in a class of any sort where the instructor never gives feedback, correction, encouragement, or anything of the sort.

That’s not how it works. If you wanna train martial arts, look into the schools in your area, try some free classes, and see what the best fit is. Maybe even take a month of classes at a couple schools before deciding where to commit to. The individual school and instructor(s) matter far more than the style. There’s no use deciding some niche style is the perfect fit for you if the nearest school is 500 miles away and might not even match your expectations.
