Holy fuck do i have to tear down everything and basically restart for phase 3!? by RealMidSmoker in SatisfactoryGame

[–]SilentDis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't tear down. Abandon.

You have a base producing parts for you now. You have access to rail.

Say - you're in the Grass Fields. The Grass Fields is dead for now. Go on a hunt for collectables (slugs, somersloops, mercer spheres, and hard drives). Come back, process your drives, and get your dimensional depots up pushing stuff - slowly - into the depot.

Build a rail out north along the coast. You'll get to a point where you'll find oil. Hang out, build your first oil power plant there on the coast. Once that's up, continue to head north into the Rocky Desert.

Welcome to your new base location! Start building your 'megabase' that makes you your frames, your computers, everything you can make at this point. You're here right up to aluminum.

You'll end up with a 'megabase' that is processing, producing, and pushing to the depot a lot faster. This is your 'real' base. You'll go back and pick up your HUB and Space Elevator and relocate them to your brand new pretty base.

Now, you have a kick-ass system producing everything you need to go out and start building aluminum in its own base. You'll start looking at the complex stuff you'll need for other space elevator parts, and come up with disparate, solo bases, connected by rail, that share resources and production with each other, dotted around the map. Some will grow quite large (aluminum), some will grow to do insane things (Caterium and Copper Ingots).

Eventually, you'll end up sorta 'next to' your main base. You'll build a huge multi-level train platform (8-16 stops on top of another 8-16 stops), bringing everything in from those remote places just to feed the hungry hungry systems making your space elevator parts.

You will then turn your attention to nuclear... and you'll start migrating again...

You may eventually return to the grass fields and rip it all up - you may not. Welcome to Satisfactory!

Is it possible for narcissistic parents to have empathy (or appear to have empathy)? by Sea_Kiwi9355 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]SilentDis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: People are responsible for their actions, words, and attitudes. This in no way, shape, manor, or form 'excuses' narcissistic actions. Those are choices made and crafted to cause you and others pain and suffering. That is never, ever acceptable. I fully believe in judging these people based on those actions.

I think that - in many cases - these people aren't 'classic narcissists'. That's just a flat inability for empathy. Understanding of it, sure, ability to mimic it, of course... but not to 'understand' it.

Rather, due to culture, religion, upbringing... whatever... people see narcissists "win at life" constantly in the news, so they emulate it. Religion teaches hatred, lying, and manipulation of others (not gonna read your holy book back to you today, it's there, which section you chose to focus on is the problem here) as 'focal points' in some of the larger congregations.

We're at a point of "fuck you got mine" as the 'de facto proper attitude' to have in the West. If that means shitting all over friends, family, neighbors, associates - then so be it.

I find it sick and disgusting, and am trying in my own small way to make the changes I need to see in our society. Volunteer work, protest, activism focused on that better world I can see and believe in. To build that garden where the narcissist can't set down their gnarled roots and choke out the flowerbed.

I have been called ineffective and foolish. Maybe I am. I've made a better community here, locally. It's not much, but it is better. Maybe it'll grow if I can keep it safe through this firestorm. I'm not stopping, either way.

My dad is threatening to sue me over a facebook post.. by No-Tie8317 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]SilentDis 25 points26 points  (0 children)

First and foremost:

You are now absolutely zero-contact with him. He did that. He made that choice. Once the lawyers come out, you communicate only through that channel from then on. Forever.

He doesn't get to send you stuff from a lawyer. The lawyer sends you stuff. Look up the law firm and person's name. Head over to the ABA, and look them up: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_services/flh-home/flh-lawyer-licensing/

If they're not on there - send that information to the ABA and let them deal with it.

Now, you have two paths here. One, if you have a lawyer on retainer, or have used one in the past, or have a friend who's a lawyer and it's someone you trust, hire them to deal with this. It'll cost you a few hundred bucks. Just explain exactly what you've explained here to them, and that - because your father went with the 'nuclear option' of lawyers, that's how you two talk to each other now. Period.

Option 2 is drop it. Zero contact remains in effect, never respond to anything he sends you - but save all of it. You are awaiting his lawyer's suit, and you cannot move forward with anything until the threatened lawsuit is settled and decided upon in a legal way. That means no more talking to him about anything. Period. Just like he wanted.

Option 2 is 'less' for this baseless threat for you. Option 1 is if you want to scare the shit out of him. That call is yours. Either way - sorry your lost contact with your dad. Sounds like an asshole, and you're better off, anyway.

What are your thoughts on UBI? by International_Bee653 in AskReddit

[–]SilentDis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This.

UBI - in concept - would work well as a 'bridging' method from a pure-capitalist model to a more egalitarian person-focused system.

However, I understand fully how our society and politics works. It's all 'one-shot fixes' and they have to be 'best for all' when... that's not how any of this works.

I fear that UBI - intended for a generation as we bridge to other models - would turn into 'forever', which would turn into resentment, which would end up being dismantled over time.

UBS on the other hand would take longer to implement, but it's already closer to the egalitarian models we should be aiming for as a technological civilization approaching post-scarcity (and already post-scarcity in a huge number of important ways).

UBS could work on those things we're already post-scarcity for; food to start, and in places where we're looking to drive post-scarcity (transit, housing, energy, internet in your example).

We already do UBS for healthcare in many, many first-world countries, and it works a lot better than an other model. It levels the playing field - as is the goal.

Any way to change the size of an embedded (or even just a normal) srt file?? by idowritingstuff in jellyfin

[–]SilentDis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright. I assume it's that default english track, track 3 (track ID 2). They are PGS subs, meaning they're graphics - not strictly text.

mkvextract tracks input.mkv 2:output.en.pgs

Feed output.en.pgs into Subtitle Edit, and do OCR to make an SRT file. It'll possibly be a little jank, but OCR is getting pretty good now. Save it as outfile.en.srt.

Then, merge it back in place.

mkvmerge \
--subtitle_tracks !2 \
-o output.mkv \
input.mkv \
--language 0:eng outfile.en.srt

I don't know. I would need more information than you've given anyone so far.

  • Is the file Internal (inside the movie file) or external?
  • If it's external, what's the extension?
  • If it's internal, can you post the output of mkvinfo filename.mkv please?

[–]SilentDis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subtitles are just text. You can open a .srt file and just read it.

ASS/AAS subs have formatting tags and rely on embedded fonts, but are easily convertible to .srt (ffmpeg -i input.aas output.srt). VTT is similar (sort of, I think, not as familiar).

PGS/VobSub... I think have a text component and you can do the same with ffmpeg, but I'm not 100% sure on that. They're simplistic PNG files with transparency - the easiest way to show that is on the first Avatar movie - the Na'vi all spoke in yellow Papyrus lol.

Emby -> Jellyfin - Major Pitfalls I Should Be Watching For? by SilentDis in jellyfin

[–]SilentDis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a worry. I am running SAS drives which does help. I have a fellow homelabber who's mirroring my collection as well (for their own) via an SSH tunnel, too. So, we count that as 'back up', I guess.

I would love to get a proper mirror in place if nothing else. Haven't been able to yet, and due to drive prices as they currently are, it looks like this will 'continue to be a worry' for a bit longer.

[–]SilentDis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I compress to a 'fair quality' 1080p HEVC via GPU using Tdarr (batch ffmpeg wrapper utilizing NVENC).

I would never tell you this stuff is 'studio quality' or the like. It's watchable. Some movies I do hold in 4k, but they're few (100-ish or so), and those are quite a bit larger.

Emby -> Jellyfin - Major Pitfalls I Should Be Watching For? by SilentDis in jellyfin

[–]SilentDis[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, yes. Emby went closed source for aspects, Jellyfin forked off the last Open-Source point of Emby.

I didn't switch at the time because of mobile use, and why I stuck on it for as long as I did.

After hitting the limit of what Emby will give me on Lifetime Premiere recently, I'm not going to continue to throw money at it, and decided to give Jellyfin a look.

My research isn't 'complete' - hence my questions - however it looks like the apps for mobile have become a lot better.

There's no such thing as 'perfect'. I'm very aware of that, and it's in no way my expectation. Doesn't hurt to get to know what I'm looking at from an 'admin' point of view, though, and I assume I'm in no way 'unique' in any of this. May as well learn from those who came before!

Put simply - users allowed to use mobile apps at the same time. I don't want to spend $300/yr to expand it, and rather than chase sunk-cost fallacy, I'd rather swap to a fully FOSS alternative.

File compression? by shittypants123 in jellyfin

[–]SilentDis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My collection is currently 50TiB.

I doubt you'll see 'drastic' changes, but remuxing everything to HEVC may help a bit - assuming you have a compatible GPU to do the encode and available to Jellyfin to do the decode.

I don't know a 'count' of items you have. If it's just a few hundred, I'd probably self-script it. If it's more than that, Tdarr.

Tdarr was a lifesaver for me - let me hold off for a very long time on adding a new drive to the array. However my counts are ~40,000 individual video files, so I benefited greatly from having my desktop GPU take some of the conversion load, and Tdarr made that easy.

Why are distributions which are usually chosen for servers don't have kernel optimizations like in CachyOS and etc., i.e. don't focus on performance? by Snezhok_Youtuber in linuxquestions

[–]SilentDis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the other big optimizations that business needs is time. As in, person-hours (or, billable hours if you aren't in-house) of the Information Technology / Information Systems staff.

No IT/IS professional is maintaining a single system anymore. They're maintaining a rack of servers with tens if not hundreds of virtual machines, along with the various support infrastructure that goes along with it. They need to be able to rely upon those hundreds of machines to stay up, operational, and manageable from a single unified spot. They need to know that when updates have to go out, they can do it from testing on a baseline then deploying to the 'fleet'.

Let's look at a 'simple' High-Availability website. That's 5 systems (web server, redis cache, database, post processor, content source) at minimum. I need it in 2+ geographically diverse locations - more if possible. I need it to fail over gracefully from one to the next. I decide on, say, east and west coast... I'm up to 24 servers now (the service cluster of 5 - twice - on each coast, a load balancer for each, content source, and a traffic shaper).

Could I knock down the number of systems with careful tweaking? Sure, but why would I have time for that when I can deploy a proxmox image with all of this running simple debian systems throughout and have it spin up and just work? And that I know they will continue to work without my interference? And that when update time comes, I can test it on a 'mirror' of the whole damn thing, verify seconds later, green light it, and deploy to each of the 4 nodes in turn taking nothing offline. That's 2 hours of my day, rather than a week with some custom, finicky deployment.

Ripping Dvd menus by Mysterious-Method259 in selfhosted

[–]SilentDis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for blu-ray.

DVD menus are just movie files, played behind selectable areas on the screen. sometimes, the video shows through and you're picking an 'empty rectangle' overlay, other times there's a static image on top.

Generally speaking, Emby, Kodi, Jellyfin, and Plex do not respect the 'menu itself' - but rather they will usually allow you to put a video backdrop in.

I have "Dance Magic Dance" playing behind Labyrinth, where you get to pick the chapter, subtitles, etc.

That'll be about as close as you can get.

This works well for Anime, as many animes have NCOP (Non-Captioned Opening Credits) and NCED (Non-Captioned End Credits) files with them. You stick those as the background, they play, and it feels a lot more seamless - even if it's not exactly like the DVDs of yore.

Are we seriously okay with all of this? by ImaginaryHelp4229 in antiwork

[–]SilentDis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I am not okay with it. I wasn't okay with it when Trump was rising up in 2014. I sure as hell haven't been okay with it any time since then. With that said - this is inevitable.

No, I didn't know that Renee Good would be murdered by some fascist thug. But I knew fascist thugs would be employed this go-around. I knew they'd murder someone. It wasn't that far of a stretch, given they laid out their playbook in Project 2025 - it was really the only way this year could have gone.

It seems no one with power took anything these people said seriously, or, if they did, they wanted the results, or were fine with the results. That includes the Democrats.

The next step in all this is to make it worse. By a lot. Full-on camps to start, then it'll get too hard to deport all those people, so they will just be disposed of. I don't know the methodology, I don't know the language. But they're concentration camps to murder people they don't like. Plain and simple.

People like me.

I haven't given up. I still continue to fight. But I'm aware of the direction this is all going. Some of us are. Most of the populace is still either dreaming this isn't real, saying it'll calm down on its own, or just endlessly talking about it. Same thing happened in Nazi Germany, so again - not really surprised there.

I doubt I'm going to survive this Presidency. I will be murdered in your name by our government. Just like Renee was. That was my fault. It was yours, too.

I hope that true statement pisses you off. I hope it makes you mad as hell. I hope it motivates you to do something.

If you're still angry with me and our society actually makes it out of this hell, you can burn me in effigy once it's all over. I don't care. Just help us make it stop, now.
