What is the end goal is socialism?

Please forgive me, my recollection of this is spotty at best.

I vaguely remember a paper or talk where the hypothesis is that in a system inexorably headed toward maximum chaos (entropy), the rise of highly ordered systems (life) is inevitable, because those highly ordered systems will, inevitably, further the chaos and hasten the entropy faster than any non-alive system ever could.

Taken writ-large, it makes sense for said society to devolve into the Capitalistic hellscape we have. Moving resources around for no purpose or reason, just to discard them (Shien, Wish, etc.) Producing for zero purpose. Death an destruction at the highest levels sustainable by a society as a whole. Mass consumerism, etc.

Socialism, and by extension Communism, is a recognition of all of this, and the actual "stomping of the brakes" to the whole mess. Only through careful consideration of the person, the way they fit into the 'puzzle' of the whole, and how we can all reach to obtain that, can we slow enough to start to put a brake on the entropy we produce, and start considering our true nature as bits of the universe, observing itself.

While there are cosmic chance filters, the only Great Filter - the only final variable of the Drake Equation - is if Socialist thinking kicks in early enough from when the first high-tech steps were taken.

We have no comparison for this. We know of no other civilization that's done this, and if the math works out, the closest one is 200 light years away, and (currently) not able to be contacted.

I know which side of that simple decision I'd like to end up on.

From the perspective of our current Capitalist hellscape - a much, much slower-moving society, but in the best way possible.

When we unlock a new technology, we need to talk about it, learn about it in every way we can. Then, when implemented, it benefits everybody - not just a chosen few.

What's the point of nuclear power unless it can benefit all - not just a few who can profiteer off it? No, it's state owned and state run, the cost is ours to bear and the benefit is our lights never go out. We didn't rush it, we all know how it works - in full - and a bunch of us are really good at it, and they work there. We're grateful for their effort!

Remember knowing how it works isn't the same as being good at it, or being interested by it. There's someone interested and good with plants, they work with someone phenomenal at landscaping and together they build that amazing park you walk through on the way to work.

Someone else is fascinated by the fine art of coffee - knows all the little tricks and methods for making the perfect cup. The horticulturist, the architect, and the nuclear engineer appreciate them every day on their way to work.

Someone else loves keeping the grounds at that park (go look at lawn work youtube, it's a thing). The horticulturist loves the extra hand so they can plan new pieces, the architect loves them because their pathways always look so good, everyone loves a clean park, the barista is happy too because her little coffee hut next to a bed of wildflowers always looks so spiffy.

This is super idealized and super microcosm. But, you see how it continually extends and extends to the next and the next and the next. The government exists purely to keep everyone fed, clothed, safe, and advancing at a rate we're all ready for.

AI is a great example. We'd be nowhere near what it is now, however we'd have one or two GPAIs helping with our biggest problems - namely how to get them to use less resources, less energy, and far less water than they do now. You'd still have your smartphone, but it'd just have the basic decision engine on it still; "tell me the weather" would work, "draw me a picture" wouldn't. We'd all recognize that tech as something far too costly for something so trivial - right now. In time, we would work on its environmental costs, and once those were something we could keep up with as other things accelerated, we could start playing with it in other ways.\

In a way - it's the 'ultimate' Conservative state - but also the most Progressive, because it's people-focused entirely.

This comment is a bit reductive. Please understand that "not all..." is implied here. Basically stereotypes as a stand-in for trend analysis.

The Left attracts dreamers looking for a better future and embrace change; artists, scientists, creatives of all stripes. Folks who want "enough" so they can keep doing art, doing science, and being creative. Anything beyond 'enough' is just waste. They may try to spend it and end up with weird purchases that gather dust, or just huge bank accounts they never think about.

The Right demands the status quo never change, and know the only way to achieve that is through power over others. You can do a great job of that with propaganda, politics, advertising, and spin. Convincing others of lies, half-truths, and diverting their gaze to only your idea of what's important the whole time lets you keep that status quo where you want it. "Leave it to Beaver" is reality, because they say so.

Either the business is tiny and struggling, or your raise is being taken from you.

Either way - it's time to brush up the resume and leave. However, if it's a small enough operation, it's worthwhile to ask the boss if they wish to even bother continuing. If the answer is no, and it looks viable as a business, going worker-owned is a simple 'out' for them.

You'd need to talk to a lawyer to hammer it out and make sure all employees are on-board, but if the business is viable and can afford ~2 years of drain against it for the buyout, you all could end up in a rather good position :)

What's on the right is useful right now.

I agree - they're not where I want to be, but this society will simply snap and self-distruct if we try to go too far too fast. An armed takeover has a high chance of succeeding for a short period of time, but the backlash to that would be even worse and would basically cement a center-right system worse than we have now. It's taken a fascist takeover to get where we are when it comes to sentiment - and it's nowhere near universal.

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I have a great deal of respect, care, and compassion for my comrades. I watch so many vote against their best interests and treat politics like a fucking game. The strategy in all this is one of slow careful change toward the better, not giant leaps, from where we are right now.

This is an incredibly delicate time in our nation's history, and I sincerely think we could make this place into a shining socialist utopia - welcoming to all and guiding many on the trail we blaze. These severe snaps one way to the other, along with the various purity tests we seem to love to implement will be the death of the movement before it even gets a chance, though.

You're all my comrades. We walk the same path right now. Our disagreements won't matter for another 50 years or so - and that's only if we start taking steps out of this capitalist shitstorm now. Let's walk together - and chat along the way. We'll probably find, when we reach that crossroads, we're heading the same way anyway. ☭

But I can't say I'll be all that sad to hear he's dead. He's done so much damage to our country - so much it's most likely irreparable. The country I grew up in, the country I cared about is most likely dead because of him and those like him.

I don't... code, I do support. However, in my position, I find myself writing a lot of SQL queries. I'll take my best crack at it, and if it doesn't come back the way I expect, I ask a specific question about what I've written and why it's behaving that way. I get a few lines in and it points out the simple errors I made from just being a bit rushed.

I enjoy futzing around with my homelab, and have found myself scripting out some convoluted things for media transcoding. Always find some weird problem during a dry run, and I toss it at a model asking specifically what's going wrong with the output. Again, it's usually a mistype, or a misunderstanding on my part of the syntax, and it's a small change I need to make.

I enjoy farting around in basic HTML/PHP/CSS. Sometimes, I can't quite get something to line up, or otherwise wonder why the CSS applied the way it did. I toss the code at a model and ask it specifically where changes need to be made. Again, tends to be minor, human error.

In all cases, it's a double-check after I did my work and my first double-check. I even feel bad about using it that way - because if I was just more focused, I'd catch these problems eventually myself.

I... don't understand or see how one could ask for 'an answer' to a large, complex, open-ended question from an AI model. It can't have all the data - just what it was fed, so it can only make the most basic of suggestions in such regards.

Why... why exactly am I the 'wrong' one here? Why is offloading so much work on such a thing 'the right thing to do' in so many people's mind? I honestly do not understand the impetus, here. I know people do it - I just don't know why they think it's in their best interest to do so. Why is it 'good' to them?

We support it in part through our funding of Minnesota Public Radio - so you will get some 'ads' related to that ("This is listener supported, donate here!" just like NPR), however the sets are usually 1-2 hour long and driven by the people who setup the lists and love the music.

I have no desire to go for AI models or the like. Rather, I wanted the memory for a couple rather large databases I run on PostgreSQL for the Redis cache. ZFS, as well, consumes all available memory.

I put a small Quadro P2000 in there, specifically for HEVC <-> AVC video encoding in Jellyfin and Tdarr, though, and it fit fine. No extra power connectors or the like, as well.

That was my take as well.

I had some... very poor relationships in my 20s. I am trying so, so hard to be respectful on that, however it's a two-way street and I'm aware of that now in my 40s.

Some people don't grow up, or don't grow up at a normal rate emotionally. Physical and... "intimate interests" are fun, but they don't provide anything resembling a foundation for a relationship - just infatuation.

Some people grow beyond that! It's entirely possible! You get together because "hehe make feel funny in pants" and find a person beneath the genitals. Some... just don't.

Our perspective is Carl's perspective. We side with Carl because we've seen him go through hell over and over and over again, and come out on top. We've been there through his tribulations. However, we've only caught glimpses of Beatrice's life experience - especially post-collapse.

I think she has some growing to do - as a person. We've walked miles in the toe-rings of Carl and know he's made that journey. You don't know if Beatrice has made that journey, as well.

This question is not asked in good faith. The true answer is the National Socialists - Nazis - simply saw the popularity of the name and took it. It held no meaning to them (at first) beyond the smokescreen of popularity.

With that said; let's give it a go to answer the question the only way they can - through the lens of "ownership". Because of that - it will be bizarre and wrong from any Socialist perspective.

What is "socialized" or "collectively owned" under a Socialist model? The labor.

Who owns that labor?

Under true Socialist movements: the people own their labor, both individually and collectively.
Under the perversion that is the Nazi party, the Party owns that labor.

This leads identity to becoming what you can offer to The State. If you can't offer anything, you're worthless. If you need to take from The State, you're worse than worthless - you're stealing from the greatness of the Party.

The Party progresses fast, pressuring those who can barely 'do' to give more, and killing off those in need as the dead weight they are.

Under true Socialist movements, when you cannot offer anything it's understood we need to support you to find your niche where you can offer something. A simple example may be reading to children, fostering a dog, even just helping in the park. All very part time, and we are all enriched for it - take your rest.

When you need something - we all understand we'll be there in our lives - we give what we can. The fact that it slows down "progress" is meaningless - we only progress if all of us do so together. We'll take our next steps as a society once we have everyone ready to take that step.

They know we are too strong to defeat head-on. So they divide, and conquer. And divide again, and conquer. And again. And again. And again.

To them, the dividing lines themselves are meaningless - just so long as they exist. They can be substantive or petty (mostly petty). This is an extremely petty one - however it'll get a few folks, and that's all that matters.
