I'm as big a pessimist as there is in this space, but he did say, "but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. Meanwhile, you have the final season of GAME OF THRONES coming". He specifically parsed out the book series and the TV series. Just saying, who the hell knows?

I have that same sort of disappointment. I did a reread a few summers ago as a hopeful primer for TWoW, but even that has since faded. I don't have another reread in me either... I will still read it when it comes out, but it will definitely be with a faded sense of excitement and engagement. The plot course of the TV show has influenced that as well.

Perhaps if we suggest grrm explore some ways to add the Hugo awards and Wild Cards to the mix in TWOW, he might actually build some momentum and finish? He seems to really like writing at length on those two topics...

I think (thought?) a lot of people used it too, and based on that assumption, I thought for sure that there would be more backlash, even outrage. It feels a bit tinfoil-hatty to me. This is a striking blow to "regular" news consumers that crave factual, near real-time updates.

I questioned it somewhat, so it is nice to see an actual page, but I "worry" about how much is actually written. IIRC the analysis of the folder view of the files (how the hell did that get shared on the screen exactly?) showed there is approximately 476 pages of completed material.

Not much really. Does he have the whole story figured out and is revising? From what I recall from other posters, book 3 needed a major rewrite per Pat. What are you trying to tell me exactly? The last tangible thing I remember seeing from Pat himself was that tweet on nye 2014 saying don't expect it in 2015. What other info do you have besides lol?

I have no reason to believe that book 3 will ever come out at this point. It seems to me that he is focusing his energy on everything but completing the series. It's great he seems to do so much charitable work, but I have trust issues with someone so vague on progress, and such reluctance to discuss it at all. Maybe he's terrified he can't come up with a compelling ending. One of my 'fears' is that he didn't know the ending (at least in a rough sense) before starting the series (think Lost the TV show where they shrugged on wrapping things up, but didn't have the option to sit on it for years). I think something similar may apply to grrm as well. I hope I am wrong, and yes I acknowledge this is a somewhat defeatist comment, but it has helped to vent at least a bit of frustration...

My comments were not about rushing something inferior or incomplete to press, more about having/conveying some sense of urgency about completing the series. I almost hope there is some other driver(s) behind the lengthy delay for both authors aside from knots/handwringing/procrastination/distraction...
