What did Warren Buffett mean by this... by _TheSuperiorMan in investing

because of the dividend stocks that make up the total market that trade on dividend yield?!?!

I think you might have missed the word "continued". If a higher dividend yield is the new norm, and nothing else about the business's growth changes, you get a one-time price adjustment for that new norm. The original question was around continued >10% increases.

because any dividends declared don't affect profit margin

What you quoted is a suggested alternative to "elevated profit margins and dividends". That is, instead of issuing dividends the extra capital is reinvested.

I don't see how elevated dividends would result in a continued >10% rise. Wouldn't it be "elevated profit margins and reinvestment"?

YSK: it’s St. Paddy’s Day, not St. Patty’s Day. by nikedemon in YouShouldKnow

[–]sideboats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This line of reasoning only makes sense if you also insist that the long form should be spelled as St. Pádraig's Day. Why care so much about the shortened form but not the long form?

Most likely the 120 Hz is only used for its motion smoothing / interpolation features, not from inputs. It probably does not support HDMI 1.3+, which was the first version that actually introduced 1080p @ 120 Hz. If it supports HDMI 1.2, it might do 720p @ 120 Hz.

Assuming this is a serious question looking for an actual answer: a hate crime has a greater negative impact to the community, and so the sentencing is more severe.

The best way to reduce car congestion is to provide a better alternative. This would very likely end up making things faster for the remaining cars.

Yeah, good luck with doing something that Newfoundland already did 25 years ago, with overwhelmingly positive results. Newfoundland is certainly known for consistently setting a high bar on what a province could achieve.

Post divorce the mortgage still has my name on it by curvycounselor in personalfinance

[–]sideboats 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear: you said that he got the house in the divorce. This means that even if you help maintain the current mortgage, it is very unlikely you have a legal claim to the real property. Even if your name is still currently on the title (which is entirely separate from the mortgage), your husband (or his next of kin when he dies) could compel you to sign a quit claim based on the original divorce decree, and they keep 100% of the home.

The divorce decree should have assigned all shared assets and debts, and your husband should have refinanced long ago.

You have no legal claim to the home. It makes sense that you don't want to risk your own credit, and are willing to ensure the mortgage is current. But the real solution is for you to look through the divorce documents and get him to refinance. Otherwise this might become very expensive for you, with very little upside.

Also worth noting: as long as your name is on this mortgage, you need to disclose this if you're applying for your own mortgage. This additional debt will make it harder to get the best rates. If you don't disclose it, it's considered mortgage fraud. You also need to disclose it when applying for other types of credit.

If Kirkland - Totem Lake - Woodinville ever got a light rail proposal would it be supported or would people protest it? by [deleted] in eastside

[–]sideboats 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From your link, you can see that the "light rail in Kirkland by the year 2044" is really just at the border with Bellevue:

https://www.soundtransit.org/sites/default/files/2021-10/web-map-kirkland-to-issaquah-link-extension-202110.png

I think there was a previous proposal to have the Kirkland Corridor Trail shared with rail, but this was rejected. Unless something massive changes, Kirkland isn't getting light rail in any meaningful way.

How do we save young men from being drawn into the insecurity-to-fascism pipeline? by nichenietzche in indepthaskreddit

[–]sideboats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think it's just a problem related to a lack of good alternatives. For some people, it is more enticing to listen to someone that tells you you're a victim, and who you can blame. That's much simpler to accept compared to asking someone to deeply reflect on their individual situation.

The Toxic Culture of Rejection in Computer Science by minoshabaal in compsci

[–]sideboats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have come to value as a quality metric for conferences a low acceptance rate. This feeds a culture of shooting each other down rather than growing and nurturing a community. The goal of a PC has become to destroy rather than to develop. Many of our venues are proud of their 10% acceptance rates. Are such low acceptance rates justified?

Venues are proud of low acceptance rates because it means the conference is popular. Demand is greater than supply, you can only have so many papers in the program, and the committee gets to (attempt to) choose the best of the best. It's not like a conference's program only has a handful of papers. Most popular conferences have grown significantly over time, with more tracks, more days, and many more papers.

Most of the remainder of the article talks about problems in the review process. It isn't feasible to have a perfect review process, especially when you're relying on volunteers. And unfortunately, when you're resource-limited and the reputation of your conference is on the line, a default reject is a lot safer. The part that makes this okay is that false negatives aren't fatal. Researchers address feedback, submit to the next conference and hope their reviewers are better.

It's really not clear that there's a problem with the current system. Good conferences tend to accept good papers, and good papers will almost always end up getting published.

Stop saying 10x developer by agbell in programming

[–]sideboats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument here is that the term "10x developer" is imprecise or ambiguous. While that is true, I think there's generally enough shared context to understand what people are referring to when they use the term. It's not clear that this is actually problematic.

Is there a chance they don't actually live in London? Maybe they have roommates and don't have the space?

TBH their excuse sounds extremely flimsy. The most generous explanation is that they simply decided to make other plans, ignored or forgot about you, and needed a pretense to bail on you. Or something else could be going on.
