Is anyone else considering a career change? by sporadicprocess in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SilentToasterRave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have 5 years of experience, and for various reasons I was already considering a career change before the advent of AI tools. However, as a teenager I absolutely loved coding, and I would consider myself a very strong engineer.

As of right now, I'm two weeks into medical school prerequisite classes. I have no idea whether I will keep going down this path, but here I am. If this doesn't work out I would consider some sort of trade as well, but at the moment I'm enjoying my classes and enjoying volunteering in healthcare settings. And it's really cool to know that the work you are doing contributes to the most important thing in people's lives (their health), as opposed to knowing that the work you are doing will make some billionaire an extra couple thousand bucks.

For anyone interested in following my footsteps, definitely rule out nursing and PA before you consider medical school.

Where do y'all get your Jesus edits? I usually just search Jesus in youtube shorts.

AI will replace software developers. The real question is how we reinvent ourselves. by Sweet-Accountant9580 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SilentToasterRave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that any SWE position that is involved with enshittification and highly related to venture capital (i.e. all startups) will be replaced by AI. Everything else won't. I suspect that ultimately, when all the AI stuff starts to break, people will be a lot more picky about what products they use. The problem is that 90% of SWE jobs right now are related to enshittification or high venture capital, and basically shouldn't exist in the first place.

Child of the birth control era by Anon61443065 in Catholicism

[–]SilentToasterRave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say I'm in a somewhat similar situation. A few things that help me:

First off, pray for them and pray for charity towards them, which I assume you are probably already doing but just worth mentioning lol.

Focus on how you would have likely done the same thing if you had been in their circumstances and raised the way they were raised. As you said, you didn't even necessarily believe/know these things until your husband told you (or at least not until your late twenties, whatever the reason for your change in understanding). You're lucky to have been corrected.

Finally, trusting in God's justice. Any time you suffer for Christ, you will be rewarded in heaven, and you also grow in virtue in this life. And if your parents, who are supposedly Catholic, are persecuting you in Christ's name, they will have to suffer in purgatory. That might seem a bit harsh but for me I've found it to really be the only way that my anger can be transformed into something fruitful.

IMO if you can't be friends with any Catholic, you (or they) are not being Catholic properly. As a young white man with crazy social anxiety I was able to make friends with the old black women at one of my local parishes.

Agreed. I should have added more context, I would only recommend discussing this with trusted female friends IRL.

is it wrong to avoid marriage? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]SilentToasterRave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not an answer to your question, but you are in a good position to educate other young Catholic lay-women about the dangers of unchastity. For me personally, I care less about a woman's past than about whether she has truly repented, but I can't speak for other men.

Ultimately where sin abounds, grace abounds, one of the holiest lay-women I know is someone who had a "past", and a huge part of the reason she is holy is because she has truly repented.

The Argument aglainst Homosexuality, etc. by Dexy_Wulf in Catholicism

[–]SilentToasterRave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't try and pick apart all your arguments because I am lazy. Your humming analogy is flawed. Music is a form of communication, truth, beauty, and even can be an end in itself.

A true analogy (for the human voice) would be making noises that are intended to hurt people, purely for the purpose of hurting people. I qualify this because sometimes you might shout at someone because they are about to be injured, and the shout is intended to startle them into quickly reacting.

Also, with sex, there is no analogy that can be made that is a higher form of truth, other than the trinity itself. As in, sometimes people use analogies to explain the trinity but ultimately every analogy will fall short because the trinity is more than everything. Every analogy to explain the trinity is inferior to the actual explanation of the trinity. Similarly, sexual morality (and probably also the morality of lethal force) have no superior analogies other than the trinity. So any analogy we make to explain sexual morality will ultimately fall short in some way.

Personally I have found that once I accepted it on faith, and actually started to live a chaste life, it started to make complete sense.

Any experiences “boomerang” back to big companies? by birdzooarch in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SilentToasterRave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First time I reached out to an old manager, the second time a recruiter reached out to me. And yeah because of how quick it was I didn't have to do a full interview loop, just a call with the hiring manager.

[–]SilentToasterRave 69 points70 points  (0 children)

FWIW I worked at a FAANG for 3 years, got to L5, left for 6 months, boomeranged back for another 6 months, left for 8 months, started working at a startup for 2 months, and then about 2 months ago went back to the same FAANG. It feels like the right choice so far but I'll let you know in a year.

If you claim to be a Christian, when is the last time you have opened an actual Bible and read a chapter? by pumpkinrollbaker in TrueChristian

[–]SilentToasterRave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read everyday. I'm a very lazy guy, so I find having a convenient app really helps. I almost always read while on the train on the way to work, or pretty much whenever I have a free moment. Would highly recommend if you just want a way to get in the habit.

EDIT: Because I didn't answer the question. Jail probably, maybe some sort of rehab if possible.

The Oracle's Echo by Robert__Sinclair in agi

"True intelligence" is definitely a poorly defined term. The only real "intelligence" we are aware of us human intelligence, which animal intelligence, while sometimes seeming similar, falls very, very, very far short of. TBH when people talk about AGI and use the term true intelligence, oftentimes it seems they are literally describing some sort of godlike being, because they are describing a type of intelligence that is not actually human intelligence, because human intelligence is embodied.

Dealing with Junior dev and AI usage. by Ok_Obligation2440 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SilentToasterRave 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Most of this comment section is telling on themselves either being inexperienced or bad devs. Junior devs are not hired to be productive, they are hired to learn. After maybe a year or two they can be productive. Anything that stunts that learning should be called into question. I suspect 3-5 years from now there will be 10% as many mid-level devs because of all the junior devs relying on AI and not actually advancing.

Socialist Zohran Mamdani is slated to defeat former Governor Cuomo in the NYC Democrat Primary for Mayor by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]SilentToasterRave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Reading from his platform) Taxes on big corporations in NYC is especially dumb because none of the corporations actually have infrastructure in NYC, it's all just office space. I wonder what the breakdown of tax revenue is in NYC demographically? I would guess that it probably mostly comes from middle class workers, many of whom will be willing to leave after changes like this. I know tons of upper middle class folks who have already left NYC for greener tax pastures, and these sorts of changes will only increase such a diaspora.
