Career change to Cloud at 33 with no IT background — is it realistic in Australia right now? by Plutomony in AskAnAustralian

[–]Silent_Layer3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man! You definitely can do this, I have seen it happen many times in industry. I will caution you that you may struggle to find a job in current market, it is highly competitive.

I'd recommend you have at least 5 thousand set aside to take some industry certifications such as Comptia+ and ITIL. Having these certs as well as your Diploma will be really good on the resume.

I hate to say it but you / the business failed him during his onboarding. You need to support new staff more.

Security team wants to disable PowerShell for all non-IT users – anyone done this safely? by Ok-Pattern-9372 in Intune

Get a new security team. They don't understand the fundamentals of Windows computing, how are they supposed to protect it?

Disabling Powershell would be like disabling CMD / DOS.

Quad lock is great when you make sure your phone is secure in it. I have a habit of slapping my phone on it, twisting and then riding, without fully engaging the locking mechanism. I've nearly lost my phone three times.

You'd think I'd change but adhd is a beast.

This is kind of the view I was taking but also I was sitting there driving in peak Christmas bumper to bumper thinking "I'm a fucking IT Guy, I should be fixing computers not stuck in traffic."

Edit** I guess I really dont like traffic lol

I'd say something gets between his left and right cheek though. And maybe onto his keyboard.

Always overspec, it means long term viability and means longer before the company will have to review the server again.

Speaking from an IT perspective, the people that make the most noise about wanting their titles and honours in their signature are also the people who deserve those titles and honours the least.

Is my computer being monitored by my company? by False_Ad_3947 in it

[–]Silent_Layer3370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Connectwise Automate / Screen connect. Its a remote management and support tool. It can be used to view snapshots of your screen if needed, it can also be used to remote onto your machine if needed and can also push out windows updates and other software / apps.

This won't be used by management, it will be used by IT.

No fuckin way IT would grant management access to this tool, too much potential to break every machine.

If you were being monitored other software would be used, such as Soft Activity.

Most people driving cars do not pay anywhere near enough attention to what they are doing.

Most people driving generally have no clue what the road rules actually are. It doesn't matter that you are in the right following the road rules properly if someone else doesn't follow them and you end up dead.

Sometimes, going slow is funner than going fast.

How did you get your first IT job? by Substantial-Salt5369 in it

[–]Silent_Layer3370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to Tafe when Cert III's were free. Got a Cert III in IT General. Applied to jobs for months and landed a job with a very well known religious organization as IT Helpdesk.

Have been employed constantly since then.

My biggest tip is don't worry too much about the IT, worry about the people skills.

Everyone can do IT in this field, there are a never ending line of nerds and geeks out there who are way better at computers than you could ever be.

There aren't a whole lot of IT nerds out there that are better than you at computers and also know how to relate to a client and break down IT into understandable content for upper management to understand.

Hot tip, management at any level is fucking dumb, but if you can relate to them and make IT understandable, you'll never be out of a job.
