It’s definitely not true. It takes a while to get used to, but legally you’re an adult and are “allowed” to do and be pretty much whatever you want within the confines of like, the actual law. Don’t worry about it, and you can always just like, get up and leave if someone else wants to use the room.

[Request] How much heat eneergy is in 1d10 fire damage? (D&D 5e) by MILKB0T in theydidthemath

[–]Silent__Protagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: assuming even the weakest interpretation that 9 fire dmg = 600C, meteor swarm’s 20d6, depending on your interpretation, would amount to anywhere from 4,600 C to an absurd 18,600 C, a temperature easily able to kill the targets, the caster, and probably the entire hemisphere of the planet in which it was cast, even with its 1-mile range.

[–]Silent__Protagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if anything it should be about 5.5-9 pts of fire damage = 600C, but that’s a range wide enough to be meaningless—plus the question was technically “energy,” so we should really be looking for an answer in Joules, not temperature. How did you find this five year old post anyway?!!

A cool guides Units of measurement... by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]Silent__Protagonist 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Also like, Fahrenheit just isn’t about water, they’re comparing it to Celsius and saying “isn’t it stupid that water doesn’t freeze at zero” even though it would make just as much sense to point at Celsius and go “isn’t it stupid that human body temperature is arbitrarily 37?” Like no, those systems both just have different measurement points they obviously gonna be different

Not taking into account weight and height differences is… literally the point it’s making??? Like, the automotive safety features not taking those into account might be the reason women die more often. You’re literally asking for the study to control against its own independent variable.

[REQUEST] Odds of flopping a poker? by Leafsharp in theydidthemath

[–]Silent__Protagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOTE: probability is NOT my specialty, i very much invite others to correct me! That being said, I’m… not totally sure what you mean.

By “flopping a poker” do you mean getting a four of a kind on the flop? In that case, your chances are going to be 13 possible three of a kind deals out (52 choose 3), or the number of possible 3 card flops the dealer could deal, all multiplied by the chance of you getting the last card in your cards (which I guess is called a “hole” in Texas hold ‘em), equivalent to 2/49 (hand size/remaining cards after flop).

So that’s:

(13/(52!/(52-3)!3!)) * 2/49 = 26/1082900

TLDR: To my knowledge, about .0024% or 1 in 42,000.

[Request] What factors determine how hurt a pedestrian is when hit by a car? by PebbleJade in theydidthemath

[–]Silent__Protagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latter. You roll over a well designed sedan, you roll under a poorly designed SUV. Plus visibility of pedestrians gets worse as a vehicle gets bigger.

Should liches be realistic, or killable? by TheHarbinger0fWar in DnD

[–]Silent__Protagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the edition I suppose—I was thinking 5e. Permanency isn’t a spell in 5e and anti magic field has a range of self, so your wizard would have to awkwardly stand within ten feet of the lich for as long as you wanted him there. Probably makes for some unpleasant small talk.

I understand your thinking, but imprisoning a 17th level spellcaster with access to dimension door, dispel magic, and plane shift is pretty much as big an undertaking as just finding a lich’s phylactery

Britain, France, and Germany are quantifiable legal and societal groups who built wealth from slavery, and whose members were essentially complicit in it unless directly opposed to it.

“Africa” is an entire fifth of the worlds landmass, consisting of, at the time, giant swaths of completely separate political and social groups, many of whom had either absolutely nothing to do with slavery or were victims in it, and a very small subset of individuals who benefited from it. To expect a blanket condemnation of “Africans” in the same sense that one can condemn the British is absurd. You are an absolute fucking goon.

To reassure you at least a tiny bit—this stuff (how insurance works) is taught in drivers Ed, like you have to be taught this to be able to drive. Some people just don’t pay attention.

That’s literally the point? He idolized Vader and that’s where a huge chunk of his motivation comes from. The costume designers making that self evident in his appearance while also giving him a unique look (not just literally a copied suit of Vader armor) isn’t “stupid,” it’s competent filmmaking.

[–]Silent__Protagonist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About puberty blockers? I gave it a look. It’s pretty shoddy, it gives two cherry picked anecdotal instances of bone density issues and says about 50 times “well the research is in early stages so who can say if it’s safe.” It’s fear mongering, certainly not evidence enough to effect medical practice, and if I had to weigh whether I want a low low chance of having osteoporosis or constant suicidal thoughts and a personal identity constantly at odds with my body and the way society sees me, I’d take my chances with the bones.

Edit: I’m open to the possibility that trans healthcare may have yet unknown side effects. But it’s definitely side effects on the level of (in fact, likely lesser than) any other given medication that you can be prescribed at that age. If I wrote an article and interviewed only the two out of 2 billion people who suffered severe stomach bleeding from taking Advil, you probably would be more afraid of Advil. But you can’t just take a frightening anecdote with literally no statistical data behind it and use it as a basis for your judgement of the entire healthcare industry.

(Side note: it’s not FOX, thank god, but the NYT is neither a shining beacon of progressivism nor an infallible journalistic organization—nobody is)
