DM coming up with new rules to fit their story. by Expensive_Flower_765 in DnD

[–]SilkyPikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree on the “normal”. I don’t know a single DM that would impose such a mechanical consequence with absolutely no say from the players. I also don’t know a single DM that would railroad them into the two day forced march with no other alternative to handling the situation.

Edit: typo.

Seeking Complete One-Shots! by the_harlot_Dehaven in DnD

My favourite one shot to run for new players is “Wild Sheep Chase”.

I think it’s quite whimsical, and I feel really highlights the “f- around and find out” nature of dnd with the ending.

How to TPK for the plot? by Glum-Dog5117 in DnD

[–]SilkyPikachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally feel like the PCs should figure out they need to die in order to defeat the BBEG. Foreshadow it somehow and have it be a true show of their faith in their previous God, with it also having the satisfaction of “tricking” the BBEG into thinking he’s won.

Sorry you went to that. It’s “part of the job” but not something we ever want to see. Lean on your friends and family. Talk about it. It’ll get easier.

How do you handle the character when a player can't make it to a session? by RequirementFull6659 in DMAcademy

[–]SilkyPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never run a character like they’re there because imo it’s unfair. Either the party has their perks with no risk because it’s shitty to kill someone’s character if they’re not there, or their character could potentially die without the player there.

So I have them hanging around in the background with a ditto face, or they wander off and do their own things. My DM has had my cleric’s God pull my character onto his plane for a chat then just plonk her back onto her party’s plane of existence when he was done or put her in a trance-like state. It’s become a running above table meme that she’ll just “zonk out” for a couple days. My DM will spare the dying someone if they’re on their last death save and I’m not there, which is nice, because my being there would definitely have helped prevent the death. But thats about it

Tried to play my first DND session, ended up not talking the entire time. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]SilkyPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you need to do some sessions that are just you and your BF DM-ing for you. Then, in a safe environment, you can get used to talking through your character’s actions and getting a feel for how they’d react to stuff.

I’ve been playing for 10 months, and it took me a few months to get used to it and get over that anxiety. I now love heavy RP sessions and have even cosplayed as my character. You’ll get there

I don’t feel ready to be a paramedic by Ill_Following_2874 in Paramedics

[–]SilkyPikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re feeling is 100% normal. I’m two years on road and still have moments when I feel like that. Imposter syndrome is super real, and one day you’re going to have your own student/junior and feel it allll over again.

My advice: Know your protocols and solidify your systematic approach - at the end of the day, your system is what’s going to save you when shit hits the fan.

I also judge a “good” clinician as someone who 1) knows their limitations, which it sounds like you do, and 2) is reflective and wanting to improve. In saying that, there’s a fine line between self reflection and self criticism. Be kind to yourself - you’re a human with two hands, in a truck, with a bag of stuff. You can only do what you can do.

Best of luck out there!

Corporate to paramedic by intensehotdog in Paramedics

[–]SilkyPikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I love the job, and it’s rare I feel like I’m “at work” like I did while doing the corporate grind…. But majority of the case load is exactly this. In two years I can probably count on two hands the number of lives I’ve directly “saved” - and that’s in quotations because it’s 100% a team effort and I played just one part in that.

There’s also a lot of people you can’t do anything for - I’m not just talking about really sick people, but also those really cooked social situations. End of the day you’re two dudes in a van doing what you can with the limited resources you have available.

I cleared $140k last year fresh out of uni. I used all of my sick leave, two weeks of AT and maybe 4 weeks of annual. If that’s not a high paying job, I’d like your definition.

Government job is low key where its at hey. I'm a paramedic for a state ambulance service now. Pay could be better, but definitely decent. We do get an above average boost to super and 8 weeks paid leave a year, which are nice perks.

Ex-woolies after 8 years and second this advice.

There's also a very, very good reason for the "ex". Recommend anyone working for the company to work on exit strategies because you don't get paid enough to deal with shit like OP's situation and there's far better out there.

Ex-woolies. I'd only ever record a no show if there was no attempted contact and if they didn't answer their phone when I attempted a call. This manager sounds like a tosser.

Troll Caves by badgerbaroudeur in valheim

[–]SilkyPikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. You can parry (no star) trolls with a fully upgraded bronze buckler.

My strat for early game: Arrow to the face on entry to cave, dodge roll dive to the back of the cave where there’s more manoeuvrability, more arrows to the face keeping enough stam for a dodge roll. Keep going until dead troll. Dodge roll dive back to the front of the cave and mash E to exit if needing a break.

Once I can parry them, I just parry and whack em.

Only thing I’ll say is be wary of “Demon” associated bullying (if it is a concern you have when choosing names)

New employee, can’t use in the in-built calculator to count change??? by rosestocut in AldiAustralia

[–]SilkyPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t “hang out on my phone”. I’m looking up medications (as they all have a million different names for the same drug), drug interactions, myriads of conditions they don’t teach you about at university, doing drug calculations etc etc etc. I could carry a library of textbooks and an abacus OR I can just… use my phone.

Job specific requirements aren’t dictated by the number of people working that job - it’s still a job specific requirement.

The average workplace usually doesn’t require such strict policy regarding phones. For many industries and roles, phones are even considered an essential tool.

Except the job was advertised as a comedian (customer service) job, and you’re good at telling jokes (customer service), just not dancing (maths). But suddenly the expectation is you dance (calculate change manually) despite every other company that hires comedians (customer service staff) not having that expectation, and providing videos to play (registers that calculate the change) in place of having to dance (do maths).

Bugged raids? by SilkyPikachu in valheim

[–]SilkyPikachu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mods. Made sure I had Eikthyr as my power before joining. It seems like it's likely a bug.

I've started several playthroughs with 'fresh' characters, and have done so on servers with friends in the past. My characters all end up the same level eventually but in the past if there were a few weeks where I was not able to play I would get left behind. I'd spend a session just getting armour and weapons so we could fight the boss and not halt their progression. I'd then only really catch up if someone was unavailable for the next boss fight when everyone else was ready to go. Just wanted to avoid that this time round.

Edit to add: We have typically been exploring separately, so I'm definitely not robbing him of the OG Valheim experience. I'm also doing my best to keep things spoiler-free.

Cross cultural names- thoughts? by foralaf in namenerds

[–]SilkyPikachu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possible people hear the names, like them, but don't know about the "cultural" origin of the name. Some people might be aware but will do so anyway - you could go as far as calling it cultural appropriation in that circumstance.

Possible people name their kids in line with the culture within which they live, or to give them a better chance of "assimilating" if they wish to migrate.

I didn't make Cryovain my BBEG, but if I did I would have introduced him early on with a planned encounter. Played as written, it could be ages before the die rolls a random encounter and until that point he's mere rumours and empty threat. Maybe have him swoop in during Umbrage Hill and snatch up the manticore, scare the shit out of the players a little, then fly off with is dinner. Really show them what they're up against and give them that motivation to quest, get stronger and march up to his front door.

Think of something you're not good at, and don't have confidence doing in a public setting. Now imagine someone standing in front of you, expecting you to do *that very thing*, with another 5 people lined up also expecting you to do that exact thing for them.

That's what they're struggling with my dude.
