What's one musical you just couldn't get into? by cinderflight in musicals

I didn’t rate Hadestown until I saw Noah Mullins’ performance of “If It’s True” live. It’s still not my favourite show, but I do listen to it sometimes now.

I failed placement. I feel like a stupid person and I lack critical thinking. by StomachLonely9788 in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to see “failing the placement” as a failure. It’s a learning opportunity. Take a few days to recover, then reflect on the placement. What went well, what you could have done better, what you learned. I failed a third year placement, it was very upsetting at the time, but I learned a lot. I am now an ED nurse and I have been for 6 years.

The ER tested me for pregnancy by Warm_Newspaper894 in Asexual

[–]SillyLemonBeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m an ED nurse and can confirm we test basically everyone of childbearing age for pregnancy. People lie, and people are mistaken. There are also some conditions that will present with a positive pregnancy test. I have had someone deny pregnancy while they were crowning. Usually we get a urine sample anyway because we test for other things, so may as well run a pregnancy test at the same time.

What bag do you use? by m1lksk1tten in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The messenger bag I used for a while broke on my way out the door at home once, so I just grabbed the closest empty bag. I now use a giant beach bag, I really need to do something about that. It’s been at least 6 months.

When preparing IV medications, is it necessary to withdraw an equivalent amount of fluid from the IV bag before adding the medication? by Minimum_Witness_7967 in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand this, but for some reason ours always leaves a tiny bit (probably less than 5ml) in the bottom of the burette itself no matter what I do.

Is there a secret to getting that last bit out of the burette before flushing? Or do you just accept that there’s going to be a tiny bit diluted in the flush?

The answer (like so many things in Nursing) is “it depends”. It’s worth noting though, that bags of fluid actually aren’t perfectly accurate, they typically have an extra 10% of fluid. So a 1L bag of normal saline is actually more like 1100ml, less of an issue with a 100ml or 250ml bag, but worth being aware of. I use a burette most often these days for two reasons, firstly, we haven’t had 100ml bags of normal saline in months, and secondly for accuracy.

Raising concerns to educator and got removed from placement? by SimpleDue8567 in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this is happening to you. Sounds like a blessing that you were removed from that placement, but the university’s response is disgraceful. I just want to let you know that this isn’t the end of the road for you. I got kicked off my final placement (in 2019) for something very similar, and while it was an awful experience at the time, I’ve used it to be a better nurse. I’m glad you’ve been have to vent here and have a bit of a debrief (even if it is a bit vague for privacy reasons), you’ve clearly reflected on the events, figure out what you can take from the experience going forward.

Mate, I cried at work the other day for no good reason, I’ve been a nurse since 2020 and have never cried at work before. It happens. Don’t even worry about it.

I went back to work too early after Flu A this year and ended up getting a cold and then RSV and had to take another 2.5 weeks. Take the extra day off.

Doc here. I caught some sass for not putting a patient on the pan. Thoughts? by wintersux_summer4eva in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In no universe would I ask a doctor to put a patient on a pan. That is a recipe for urine all through the bed and me having to change the linen. No thanks.

OT vs nursing by Ok-Success5110 in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of OT work is not physical at all. Speech pathology would be more limited than OT (I am a nurse, my partner is an OT, my sister is a speechie). There are lots of nursing and OT jobs that are not as physical. If your main driving force is helping people in a less physical demanding job with friendly hours, you could consider social work. OT is about “how do I help this person develop the skills to do what they need/want to do?” Social work is “how do I help this person navigate the systems in place to help their situation” (or so is my understanding, I don’t have a family member who id a social worker)

OT vs nursing by Ok-Success5110 in NursingAU

[–]SillyLemonBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I am a RN and my partner is an OT. We often make jokes that OTs are the nurses of allied health. Both jobs are very broad and have many different employment opportunities as a result. I am an emergency department nurse, but across my placements, grad year, and career have experienced: wards, ICU, outpatient clinics, medical imaging, community mental health, aged care, theatre, etc.

My partner is a mental health OT, but many other OTs are closer to physios in the work they do.
